I realise that I need to bleed and top up the oil for the preload adjuster, I will do a separate video on this process on another day.
Ha. Yes. That’s what I thought when I saw how easy it was to wind the first half. Good catch.
I wonder why that would be low on oil ? Maybe the remote line was removed when the shock was removed from the donor bike ? I’m hoping it’s not a leaking seal, but if it is no doubt you could rebuild it yourself
I have to say that the advise and direction that I have gotten from your channel has help me a whole lot with my latest bike project.
I found your channel 3 months ago when I started working on a 1979 XS110. The bike is coming alone nicely and your videos have been a great help. I was not sure if you had the time to reply to comments on all of your older videos so I thought I would leave you one on this one.
The shock swap - when you really appreciate having a centre stand! Nice upgrade and, of course, the Öhlins is fully serviceable/rebuildable too, which is another bonus.
Bunged an old Ohlins in my aging FZ 750 oh what a difference money well spent
Andy, please make a video where you show all possible adjustments and how it affects the bike. Thanks mate!
I can try, but I don’t know if I really have the knowledge.
Great to see you back on the spanner’s mate , must be 1000000 guys doing vids on here now but none do it the Andy way 👍
Great video as always, Andy! I did this same upgrade on my ST3 about 4 months ago, since the stock Sachs rear shock was shot. I grabbed a used Ohlins rear shock from a ST3S from Ebay at a decent price. It VASTLY improved the ride comfort and stability, especially with a passenger and full luggage. You should hopefully be pleased too when you get yours out on the road. Cheers!
Good stuff Andy
Always great tech videos Andy . Well done again 👌
cool mate. cheers.
greetings from Germany. Your 900ss videos helped my a lot on my own 900ss.Thanks for that!
Gotta love your Ducati workings! Andy, wait for me to come to Tassie next year!🙏
Hi Andy after watching you enjoy your Ducati bikes i was inspired to try one lol, so far loving my multistrada 1200 👍
Andy maybe weld 4-5mm plate under main stand for rear tyre to clear ground
Comment for the algorithm!
Nice upgrade cobber, hope the health issues are improving day by day👍
Nice upgrade, plus the whole setup looks a lot more trick now.
And no more blue spring, so that's a lot of wins 😁👍👊
Nice upgrade Andy - mint, Ohlins are the bees Knees….👍
Nice upgrade. And so much less of a Ball ache adjusting everything. Which reminds me that my 20yr old fazer boxeye could do with a good condition r6 rear and a set of progressive front ones
Patience of a saint! I changed the shock on my firestorm after the weekend. In comparison for access yours is way easier. Looks well thought out
Mate I really love your Fitzroy poster!
Well done in the shock too.
🦁
Nice mod mate, I would have had it serviced by my local Ohlins dealer first. (Only because I’m lazy and wouldn’t want to take it back off )😬
Did exactly the same thing with a shock from a Daytona R into my Street Triple R. It transformed the rear end. If you’re gonna upgrade anything this is what you should do first rather than the standard thing which always seems to be an exhaust.
I enjoyed the vid. I have the 4s. Thanks.....got a question, I have the same Ohlins rear shock. You have the manual pre load adjuster and the collar adjustment. How does that work?
I bet u feel epic 😏
lol 😂
Had similar issues before, just put the damper back in upside down, easy access to preload and rebound
Unfortunately you can't do that on the ST3 as the piggyback reservoir would foul the swinging arm if mounted upsidedown.
Hi andy, nice to see you back. Ingot a question. How is basket case ?
Basket Case is fine. Seems a few are curious, I’ll have to go and blow the cobwebs out and do a video soon.
It's a Sachs
Jeez Andy, your flouros, really flicker through the camera.
Hello Andy. Really enjoyed your suspension-upgrade. The adjustable rod, is it for adjusting the height of the bike? I noticed that my Monster 900 has one too and I also noticed that the previous owner of my bike, welded a little block under the side stand. Is this because of the angle the bike has on the side-stand? I've got a Sachs damper btw. Someone is goiing to service that for me.
Short answer is yes. However the primary function is to adjust the rear to influence the front. By “lowering” the rear you change the angle of the rake and trail and effectively slow the steering down. By raising the rear you have the reverse effect and speed the steering up. The trade off for faster steering is decreased stability at high speed. The trade off for increased stability is slow steering, everything is a compromise. You just need to make changes to the settings that suit you and your style.
😜👍
Hey Andy, I was hoping you could give me your thoughts on dealing with really heavy carbon build-up on the pistons on my 93 900SS.
After seeing how badly fouled the plugs were, I decided to put an inspection camera down there and to my untrained eye it looks really bad.
Other issues I have found that I am hoping is the main causes are, the foam air filter was severely over oiled, and the plug gap was too wide. I know they generally run on the rich side, but I also remember getting pretty bad fuel economy, possibly indicating an overly rich mixture (maybe??), so that may also be adding to the problem.
So what I think has been happening is, these problems have caused poor combustion that have then caused the higher than "normal" carbon build up....?
So if I then fix said problems, will an improvement in combustion harmlessly burn off excessive carbon?... or,... is there a possibility that the carbon may break up into chunks and start scoring the cylinder walls and/or cause other damage?
I am not asking for your advise on what, I Should do, or, what you would do etc..... and I know you aren't a mechanic.
So, in no way can anything you say in reply be taken as professional advice, but merely a chat between Ducati owners, and I know that Any decision that I Make, on how I choose to move forward, is purely my choice, and I am solely responsible for Any outcome good or bad 😁👍👊
So with my disclaimer/oath/vow out of the way 😂 do you have any thoughts you can share with me about this?
Excess carbon on these can be a sign that you are burning oil. Which often is due to valve stem seals, and less often due to worn rings. Check that you don't have a lot of carbon on top of the valves.
Most likely oil burning, guides or oil rings or both. If it were me, and it was. Engine out heads off cylinders off inspect and rectify.
Does compressing the spring change the ride height?
No. The height is fixed mechanically by the length of the shock and the suspension components. It allows you to carry more weight and maintain the correct amount of sag.
Let me take a wild guess you're fixing your motorcycle because it's not working exactly right or it's busted
Basket Case?
Hmmm. Maybe soon.

Wudda ya mean maybe soon? What have you done with him, ya bogan? 😜
