2001 Dakota. I've replaced the resistor block twice and the connector/wires once. I finally realized the problem is the connector and pins are simply not big enough to handle the amp load on the two highest speeds. The contact point gets hot and gradually oxidizes which creates resistance which leads to more heat at the contacts. The first time mine went out the connection was fused together. The trick is to start with a new resistor block and solder the wires directly to the pins. You have to cut away part of the connector shroud to get a soldering iron in there. A Dremel works good for this. Once all five pins are soldered, you can fill the whole cavity with silicone sealer as a potting compound. Mine never failed again. Also the blower motors are dirt cheap on Amazon. Replace the blower motor while you're at it. A new one will have less drag and therefore not draw as many amps. Also you can get the resistor block and connector with wires on Amazon for cheap.

Hello Steve, I just changed out the resistor and wiring harness on my 2003 Dodge Dakota. Thanks for taking the time to put your video together, it made things alot easier. The resistor and the harness connection were fried, checked all fuses, good to go! Thanks Again! Paul

this is a very informative video, thank you. When I discovered that my plug was messed up i actually found a new one looking on Ebay but could not have made the repair without the information from this video :)

Good video, bought resistor and motor. Motor was good. Didn't have a resistor, plug just went to a black piece of plastic. Put in a resistor and it works.

Thanks for the video. Dodge has a MAJOR problem with this. I've changed everything several times and still have the problem. Found out that my ignition switch might be bad. If I change that and it doesn't work, don't know what else it could be. I've replaced everything several times. Hopefully the ignition switch is the culprit

The resister thumb push activates an arm which is supposed to lift over a small ramp. Simply gently place a thin pick under the arm. (I learned the hard way 😄)

i just did mine on a 2004. i ordered the resistor kit from rock auto and it included a new replacement plug connector and pigtail, to fix a melted connector..
no trip to the salvage yard for this anymore...

For any one interested partsgeek.com has the replacement plug and the resistor for 14 bux or so. My blower works in all speeds but it completely quits at times. After watching one of these videos i simply wiggled the plug and it came back on. I thought to myself, ok it was just loose. then it did it again and once again I wiggled it and it works again. I haven't pulled it out yet but I figure the plug needs replaced. Here is link. hope this helps. www.partsgeek.com/1ldlj38-dodge-dakota-hvac-blower-motor-resistor-kit.html?PartsGeek+ShopZilla&fp=pp&Dodge+HVAC+Blower+Motor+Resistor+Kit

This is something that Dodge should have recalled. I can see that in hot and dry climates, this can be a fire hazard. I guess if nothing has actually happened, they just don't care.

That was my line of thinking too but but lo and behold 3 years after replacing the motor and right on schedule (every 3 years) my resistor let go tonight and no heat in -5 degree temp sucks!

Circle auto is the shit.. Autozone asked 52$ + 20$ core for a brake caliper for my Dakota.. circle said 19$ but core was 35$.. just took bad caliber with me and paid no core charge... Circle Auto people... That’s the place to check for parts...

Ok there is a reason the resistor burnt .. The blower is drawing to many amps ...now that you changed the resister and harness do yourself a huge favor and change the blower as the old one is gonna burn again in about six months to a year then the next one you get Wil burn sooner.

Don't assume your always right. This video is 5 years old and I still have this truck, and the blower still works fine on the now 5 year old resistor. Failing blower is not the only cause of resistor failure. Have a nice day.

You are correct about the amp load, and a new motor may or may not be needed. But the real flaw is in the connector on the resistor block. The pin connections are too small for the amp load, even with a new motor. One trick is to coat the pins with electrical joint compound so they don't oxidize and build up heat even faster. The nuclear solution is to cut off the connector (socket side, not pin side) and solder the wires directly to the pins. The motor is yet another issue. The way the impeller is designed (cone shape) there is no way to add a drop of machine oil to the shaft and reduce the drag.

the reason why your resistor is blowing is because of the blower motor(common problem in these trucks) you need to replace both motor and resistor..

Mason Germany I did this repair over 2 years ago now, and it's still working fine. a bad blower motor can burn out the resistor.

I've replaced several resistors, wiring harness and motor. STILL have the problem. Found out that it might be the ignition switch. Not the tumbler, but the electronic switch to the left of the column. It controls the AC/Heat, radio, etc. I'm going to try this next, because nothing else is working. I found this video for the Durango. I actually have an 04 Dakota and a 01 Durango and they're both doing the same thing. Once the OEM resistor goes bad, and you replace it, the motor starts pulling the amps. The resistor will fix for a short time, but I guess it fries the ignition switch to where nothing works. Hope this works for mine. Found this vid on how to change it on a Durango. ua-cam.com/video/g4axOtNYg_c/v-deo.html

why do not you teach this?
The new blower motor its too expensive to buy it
