    not to sound like a smartass, but there is a thing called centrifugal force...a heavier weight swinging in a circle is going to be more difficult to manage then a lighter weight. So the light carbon rims will make a huge difference in handling. I agree it should be part of a whole package and would probably make ZERO different on a raked out Harley..haha! But any Sport type bike it will definitely make a different feel. Especially cornering at higher speeds!

  • @GodLike_1
    @GodLike_1 5 років тому +3

    I agree with your analogy, carbon fibre wheels will definitely help with the handling because of less rotational mass or weight making it more flickable in the corners but straight line speed will depend on rider and overall body weight

      less rotational mass also means quicker to accelerate. less mass means it's easier to get it spinning.

    thanks for making a video about carbon fiber wheels. I installed carbon fiber wheels on my bike, it makes a positive difference. Handling is better, acceleration is better also. It allows the engine to take advantage of the power band start of the torque curve and it obviously noticeable to people without any technical knowledge of motorcycles. Braking also is better for the same obvious reasons that there is less rotational mass to slow down, not to mention just less weight to bring to a stop. A combination of aftermarket titanium exhaust, Power Commander V with ignition, a good MAP or you could have your ECU flashed, and replacing many of the stainless bolts with titanium bolts makes a huge difference on weight complimenting the BST Carbon wheels which I went with. Since my first purchase of carbon fiber wheels, I now consider bikes based on the availability of carbon fiber wheels as an upgrade, the only downside is price. Carbon fiber wheels actually keep a memory of their original shape better than any other wheel material. I reduced the weight of my Yamaha R3 from 167 kg to 135 Kg and still have it street legal with full lights etc. The carbon fiber wheels helping to get that weight down also allows the Ohlins suspension to perform much better. Carbon Fiber wheels are only worth it, if you plan on doing many other mods to compliment them and have some excess funds. I could have already purchased multiple bikes instead of sets of BST wheels, but where I was almost ready to sell a few bikes, now after the upgrades, they ride like much different bikes and plan on keeping them, never getting rid of them. All the bikes I have carbon wheels on, had the original wheels prior to installing the carbon and each was a noticeable difference not just by me but a couple of friends that own the same stock bikes, taking them out and swapping bikes along the ride, they too easily noticed the difference. The bikes ability to drop into a corner and pull right back out, is effortless, whereas fighting with the bike before with a stock set up. I have to reiterate, carbon wheels work best with a compliment of mods, not just on their own, but yes even on their own you would see an improvement but a costly improvement.

      Very good feedback and you are right. Thanks for watching. 💯 they are cool, going from reg wheels to CF makes a difference for sure, but light mag wheels to CF, the difference is negligible. Definitely makes a difference dipping them bike into the corners. Thanks again for watching.

    I used to think I wanted carbon wheels, then I saw how they exploded on my friend's Aprilia Tuono. Yes they are the biggest performance upgrade you can make, but I don't trust them. I just bought a set of forged wheels which are a significant improvement over cast with the saftey factor built in. I think that's a worth while compromise.

    • @TheSpeedBug
      @TheSpeedBug  4 роки тому

      Forged aluminum vs carbon for a street bike is not worth the money. A full race bike with all other supporting items, that’s a different story. If they come on the bike as an option, then so be it. Thanks for watching

      @@TheSpeedBug I just paid $1.7K at AF1 racing (these are standard equipment on Factory RSV4s) for a my forged aluminum wheels (vs 4K for Carbon). Cast rear weighed 14.5, and for forged it weighed 10.5, up front it went from 8.5 to 6.5 lbs. That kind of unsprung weight savings will be noticed doing a high speed corner at the canyon, riding and turning at 100 on the FWY, accelerating, and at the occasional track day. Acording to someone on our forum that weight a set of BSTs carbon would have decreased the rear another 2 lb in the rear and 1 in the front, enoguh to notice an additional improvement still, but not as great an improvement, at $2K additional cost, and without the saftey factor of the forged wheels. Carbon is the ultimate wheel for sure, but if you don't inspect your wheels for hairline fractures you're taking your life in your own hands. Be safe brother !

    Do you ever practice emergency breaking where you squeeze as hard as possible without locking or abs kicking in? I've only owned two liter bikes, 2020 r1m and 2022 s1000rr, and the stopping power of the bmw blows me away every time. I've yet to flash the bmw, so I can't really comment on acceleration (that is inferior to the flashed r1m in low and mid rpms), but in my experience both turning and breaking is significantly better because of the low rotational inertia.

    • @TheSpeedBug
      @TheSpeedBug  Рік тому

      Yes, often in the rain. In the street, lower speeds, carbon wheels make no difference, track, yes.

      @@TheSpeedBug Mass is _resistance to change in motion_ and is not a function of speed, unless it's close to c = 186,000 miles/sec. Therefore, [edit: you _should_ feel] there is an EQUAL difference at all speeds with equal acceleration. Acceleration is again independent of speed, just like an overweight person finds it hard to get out of their chair or increase their run speed from 5mph to 6mph over the same amount of time.
      Be it from 0 to 5mph or 100 to 105mph, the effect mass has on acceleration is EXACTLY the same, given that change occurs over the same time.
      Any feeling that is not consistent with this is due to some nonlinearity or flaw in your sensory organs, not a matter of fact. The inner ear was not meant to precisely measure performance of motorcycles, just keep you balanced enough to escape predators.

    Rather than road stuff, I would be curious about how the lowered weight affects the bike when the wheels are bounding over a washboard or corrugated road surface. I would think the closer you could get the bounding weight to zero, (impossible, of course!) the better the control and the ride would be. Any thoughts?

    Awesome content bro wheels will save LBS & affect handling so would an aftermarket Exhaust save LBS & affect performance Catalyic converter alone is close to 20 LBS & there is weight savings in the muffler as well
    Like you said I would rather upgrade the exhaust system vs the wheels alone on top of that the forged wheels on the S model that offer the ( premium package ) are very light to begin with
    Therefore switching them to BST CF style for example will save roughly 10 LBS ( Both wheels combined ) if that ie not a major issue
    At the end of the day to each his own when it comes to mods . BMW is very smart for offering the M model for a slight increase in price than the regular model . Without any doubt it will cost more to add aftermarket CF wheels to the base model so why bother get the Fancy hot 🥵 looking M Beemer as it comes with CF wheels / light led battery / fantastic looking paint scheme / 3 Race mods etc etc

    I was even debating getting the regular S1000RR ( softer seat ) vs the M model
    Then Upgrading the OEM battery to an Led battery . Take the 💰💰 saved between both models ( M & regular)
    to upgrade to an aftermarket Full Arrow system with Ti headers . Then last but not least buy a set of the M fairings ( love the color ) switch them & sell the factory set to recover cash spent or simply paint the stock set to match the M paint scheme either option won’t be cheap but it’s a thought anyway only time will tell the route I take if any
