When I was 18 years old, as a private in the United States Army, I listened to a speech given by my Brigade Commander. I was moved by that speech but found myself perplexed that I didn't completely understand some of the words he had used in the speech.... After the speech, I ran into him and exchanged a few brief words.... Again, He used a couple words that I didn't know... I felt dumb. I nodded and smiled while my face grew red with embarrassment but I wouldn't dare to ask him what his words meant. However, I think he recognized my confusion. That night, I went to Wal-Mart and purchased a dictionary. I looked up each word so that I could understand what his message was, in it's entirety. That was the first domino in a series that would take me from challenging myself with a vocabulary list weekly, in which, I would challenge myself to use the words I would learn in a sentence to doing Public Speaking in various capacities throughout my career. Broadening my vocabulary has contributed so significantly to my self confidence. 🔥 I love what you're doing here!
@@coolbreeze3793 …this person was brave enough to share how they improved their lexicon…and…you came in with assumptions on what era did they serve, assumed they went to war, and subjectively gave your perspective on said war(s)…
@@shylaboostartsover4895 It’s worth it. I did this several years ago, and now I do actual public speaking engagements. When you’re able to display a great lexicon, it can help you immensely in various situations/ways!
I've found that when someone constantly says "I know" when you're speaking to them, it's often a defense response. They feel you're treating them as if they were ignorant, and they feel the need to show that they already know the information. It's rooted in their ego, and they aren't recognizing that this person has no idea of what knowledge they may have. So instead of either just listening and saying thank you, or replying with a different, less defensive phrase, they strike back and shut the other person down.
We cannot assume innocence in whoever is receiving the “I know.” Sometimes people genuinely bring ignorance and bias into their interactions and insult others with disclosures of very rudimentary concepts. I.e. the white guy in the room who constantly assumes minorities need them to explain things. Reminds me of the time I did jury duty and the one blonde haired, blue eyed male in the room felt the need to repeat the concept of whether something was proven beyond the shadow of a doubt while everyone was merely thinking through the case. The judge shoved the concept down our throats beforehand and everyone was clear but he designated himself the one to keep explaining this and that in spite of anyone giving him any proof it wasn’t understood. The frequent “I knows” he received was him being spared the verbiage he genuinely deserved in that situation.
ANYTIME I have ever heard an individual say "I know" after hearing an explanation or data this has been the case. You often see this in the medical field with patients (who have done their own research and "THEY KNOW!") As soon as I see this response I immediately see they are often extremely ignorant on the topic. This is something that medical providers can very much relate to. -Dr. Ryan
Couldn't have said that any better. You're absolutely correct! At my job, had to instruct someone on the proper way to use some heavy duty machinery, for day in day out usage. Young man thought he knew everything... and knew absolutely nothing ! During course of the day, I'd point out his weak points and what he was doing wrong. I'd always hear, "I know, I know!" and he'd go back to doing "wrong" again. Finally, I said to him... "listen... we're all grown. We don't like being told what to do. But the fact of the matter is, if you knew what you were doing they wouldn't have placed you with me. So just listen." He'd listen for all of 4 minutes, and wound up doing wrong in the process. Goofing up again....
Thank you! My work colleague says "I know" when information is being shared with her. It comes across as being rude, ignoring people, & unappreciative. Causes communication breakdown. Perhaps we'll just leave her "Post-it" notes. The only time she wants to communicate is when she wants to interrupt the way you are doing a task. She ignores that everyone has a way of doing simple tasks. Her way does not improve the process or make it faster. The end result will be the same. I simply say "I understand" instead of arguing. At the end of the day I am not going to lose sleep over her saying "I know". The team sees this which makes the rest of us look like better employees. As an adult it is her responsibility to improve her communication skills.
It is. Code or social cue to stop talking to that person. When o use it , I mean stop talking to me. I did not ask you to speak to me or for any information 😂😂😂
@Stephone Bryan lol I hear you . Although my comment was more about when in back and forth conversation. Saying “I know” is kind of abrasive and basically cuts the conversation short . It also makes an assumption that I think you dont know lol I’m just engaging in dialogue but yes when people give unwanted opinions or try to act like a know it all . I know is a quick and easy way to shut that down .
@Stephone Bryan fair enough but this isn’t about having a long conversation per se , more so about a fruitful conversation, I can only be talked at for so long . I will eventually give my input . If you respond to my input with I know , if you know why exactly are you speaking to me , go talk to yourself , review things in your head . Only therapists have to sit and be talked at for long periods of time without input , you don’t engage others in conversation and then respond to their input with “I know” . That’s not very self aware . Also shows you have crappy conversational skills , me telling you something you know doesn’t always warrant the response “I know” and if you would like to disengage from the conversation do so but don’t be surprised if someone you constantly say “I know” to starts to avoid conversation with you . If you enjoy conversation with someone saying “I know” is a good way to make sure they don’t enjoy conversation with you .
For me I only say it when someone is intricately explaining something simple to me that I'm well aware of. If you sit there and try to lecture me on the techniques of tying a shoelace, I'm gonna say "I KNOW"
James, you are gifted. What an incredible teaching style. I don't even 'know' why I'm watching your videos, but seeing how you deliver your lectures helps me 'understand' what superb communication is meant to look like.

A man I worked with years ago (RIP) used to say "Those people who say they know it all are really p*ssing off those of us who do!" He usually said this when the know-it-all in the room started bragging - truth is- when it came to that job, he did know it all. Loved this video!

That cannot be true. If you replaced all of your English education with thus, you'd be worse off. The hate we have of institutions shouldn't blur the truth.
@@ovuzajemuta7935 I disagree. We mainly learn to communicate through person to person interaction. English classes teach us how to write formally. I was never taught through the public school system how to converse with others in a way that conveyed and articulated my thoughts in a stronger manner.
@@ed-mh7zl That's what you think. Compare the formally educated chap to one who learnt purely from informal communication. Compare the vocabulary. I'm pretty sure none of these words are new to you but thwy would be to the not so educated. The schools give generic blanket education. The onus is on you to dwell on certain topics.
When my mom and I first came to the United States I picked up that “I know” phrase and I quickly dropped it because my mom didn’t know English and she told me that I needed to do the dishes and I replied with I know and she almost beat me lol since “I know” sounds a lot like “ai no” in Spanish meaning something like hell no. If it wasn’t for my English speaking aunt being there I would have gotten a good ol fashion butt whooping lol 😂

This was more of a communication class.. which needs to be implemented in any language we speak… thanks for teaching us how sensitive words can be… Great lesson Sir! 👏
I have one quarrel with the quiz. “What I’m telling you can get a lot of people hurt….” When I hear people say “I see.” It automatically makes me think this is the first time they’ve heard it / they didn’t know it before I told them. If it’s something important that I feel like they should understand, that would worry me.

In Spanish we also use "I comprehend" a lot, specially when it's about hearing someone else vent or explain and such. I think to comprehend is even stronger than to understand.
In English (in actual England) we use "I know" in a way that might be different from Americans. All the meaning is in the delivery and it can be a very simple phrase of understanding and a connection between two people - one of whom is confiding their worries or their pain to another. I would dispute that there is even a need for this video, but as I said perhaps it's an English/American thing.
Over my years of learning Polish I've unfortunately caught one of their most commonly used phrases, "no wiem", which made me start saying it in all of languages that I can speak. I greatly appreciate that I found your video because I really hate the phrase, "I know", so I'm reteaching myself to avoid using this. Like you said, It makes me feel like people are not actually considering my message and they only care about what they want to tell me, so conversations feel one-sided.
You are the best teacher I 've ever stumbled upon so far. It's funny to learn wth you as well as enhancing skills through cogitating. I appreciate a lot and respect you.
I wish this content was taught in high school. The foundation of communication often isn’t learned until college which pertains to people seeking higher education. That leaves out a large chunk of our society.
The Business Communication class I took in college was all about learning the professor way to teach their course. I was working in a Fortune 500 company and was asked to create a emergency email alert for a outage. I used the same template that was used at my work in the class and failed the assignment. Writing is too subjective what’s taught in a classroom is usually far off from reality. I do recognize how this lesson can be used for professionals. From my perspective learning how to read and respond to emails in a timely manner is a key skill that gets overlooked.
This content is taught in select high schools, those schools are in the private or accelerated school systems. The poorly funded public schools will never teach students this basic understanding.
I work in the customer service industry and I often use the term "I'm aware", "I understand " or "help me understand". Often times these terms help defuse any hostile situation. I will however incorporate the following From my perspective...
Once I had a customer service representative say I know I know and knew the problem but didn't know what to do, I kept telling her what to do and she insisted that there was no other option but hers, but she didn't know really cuz at the end my solution the problem was right and hers was completely wrong.

@@msartmamaz idk how old you are but in 90's there was a popular talk show called the Ricki Lake Show. The guests on it almost always said "Ya know what I'm sayin" constantly to the point of it being bizarre. My friends & I would watch this show _just_ to laugh at the constant, repeated occurrence of this phrase. One time, swear to god, we counted this one dude saying "Ya know what I'm sayin" five times in a row and it was the first thing out of his mouth! Although the last time of five times he did begin the phrase with "Yeah" and end the phrase with "Ricki". As in "Yeah, ya know what I'm sayin, Ricki?"
I love how complex the English language can be, even when discussing simple vocabulary usage... there are so many words that one can use to better illustrate meaning/intent... Great content!!!
@David Bork okay fair enough. I just thought it could be just that English has the most words by a big margin. Which languages did you learn? I'm thinking of trying Spanish myself
The problem is that in order for a school to have someone like this, you have to find someone like this... They are few and far between. Quality teachers are rare.
This lesson has much value to me. Nobody has taught me this in my language that is why in my country, people are always using I know I know all the time, especially in younger generation. They doesn’t concern others’ feeling. In my work place, younger employees are ending up arguing with their boss.:)
As a native southern Brit I recognise we share the same pronunciation of 'a' e.g bath, and. I appreciate the knowledge you shared in this lesson as my job involves professional phone calls so having the vocabulary to convey meaning in my sentences is vital to effective communication. Thank you

Good observation, and definitely something I could work on. Spot on.
Literally me, sadly...
So just listen."
He'd listen for all of 4 minutes, and wound up doing wrong in the process.

Exactly! That’s my opinion as well.

I should be attending my Calculus class right now but a lesson or two from this man won't hurt.

I greatly appreciate that I found your video because I really hate the phrase, "I know", so I'm reteaching myself to avoid using this. Like you said, It makes me feel like people are not actually considering my message and they only care about what they want to tell me, so conversations feel one-sided.
