  • The new album 'J.T.' is available January 4: newwst.com/sejtID
    On the forthcoming album, J.T., Steve Earle & The Dukes pay tribute to Steve’s late son, Justin Townes Earle (J.T.), who passed away on August 20, 2020 in Nashville. The album will be released digitally on what would have been Justin’s 39th birthday, January 4, 2021, via New West Records.
    J.T. finds Steve Earle & The Dukes covering 10 of Justin’s songs - from “I Don’t Care,” which appeared on his 2007 debut EP, Yuma, and a trio of selections from his full-length debut album, The Good Life (“Ain’t Glad I’m Leaving,” “Far Away In Another Town” and “Lone Pine Hill”) to later compositions like 2017’s “Champagne Corolla” and 2019’s “The Saint Of Lost Causes,” which was the title track of Justin’s eighth and final studio album. J.T. closes with “Last Words,” a song Steve wrote for Justin.
    100% of the artist advances and royalties from J.T. will be donated to a trust for Etta St. James Earle, the three-year-old daughter of Justin and Jenn Earle. While somber in parts, the album is ultimately a rousing celebration of a life lived with passion and purpose. The recording features the latest incarnation of Steve’s backing band, The Dukes - Chris Masterson on guitar, Eleanor Whitmore on fiddle & vocals, Ricky Ray Jackson on pedal steel, guitar & dobro, Brad Pemberton on drums & percussion, and Jeff Hill on acoustic & electric bass.

    The father paying tribute and celebrating his son's artistry is a poignant and powerful expression of his grief. More than that, it is a pathway toward healing, not only for the family but for those whose lives were touched by Justin's music.
    The choir at the end is so fitting.
    Thank you Steve and Justin.

      Loved the choir touch too, at the very end of the Harlem River Blues record a choir reprises the chorus just like that.

      Ed b do you know Steve because even tho my stepdad is a huge fan ... I want to contact him somehow or let him know that he has another son out in the world and I never got a chance to meet him I'm pretty sure he'd like to meet the guy since it looks like Steve s*** him out of his ass 🤣 or maybe not maybe he don't give a s*** that the dude struggled his whole life and had s***** foster parents. That's right Steve if you're reading this one of one night stands led to a woman giving a kid up to adoption and that kids had a rough life but he's a good person it's one of my friends and he ain't trying to get in contact with you but I think it'd be cool for you guys to meet.

    I heard Justin describe how much it meant to him when his Dad told him 'Mama's Eyes' was a good song. This album is the perfect way for his Dad to pay respects to Justin. And to raise funds for Justin's little daughter. I hope loads of people buy the album.

    If by some chance Steve reads this, just know that you and Justin are loved by many people all over the world. And know that’s Justin’s life, though short, bore much fruit. His songs aren’t going anywhere. He was a great songwriter and his songs will be listened to by many folks for a long, long time. And good lord could Justin pick a guitar! I will be buying this album on vinyl and I will encourage every lover of great songwriting to do so.

    I was aware of Justin Townes Earle from a track on one of his Dad's CD's and their collaboration on "Avalon Blues," a compilation of Mississippi John Hurt songs. Then when I saw him play this masterpiece on David Letterman it just blew me away and I became a fan. I'm really glad that Steve and the Dukes did this.

    • @danielmims8467
      @danielmims8467 Рік тому

      That David letterman performance was amazing. Jason Isbell playing lead guitar and Paul Schaffer soloing . It was great and I wish that was how it sounded on the record . That was the first time I really saw jt perform and he's my cousin. Ive played guitar with him but had never seen him live . Since his passing I've went back through his catalog and alot of those tunes hit me hard being the same age and sharing alot of the same demons, his passing finally gave me the kick I needed to lay all that stuff down. Love his music and it means alot to me as well . We had planned to hang out when he came to Houston in October 2020 when I spoke to him last in June of that year and we lost him in August. It was so messed up the publicist released a press statement before most of the family knew. That's how his grandma found out and also how I found out when he was top trending on Twitter and fb . I thought he had a new hit at first my excitement left pretty quick. Now , he is buried close by in the family cemetery out in East Texas.

    I always did want to hear you record your own take on this song. It really is an American classic, or at least will be in the future. Justin's music hits me like a freight train every time I listen, and I'd say he earned his spot among your tributes to your other heroes.
    I don't know how you ever recover from the wound caused by losing a child, but I hope that recording an album of your most-loved songs by him has brought you some semblance of peace. You and Justin are among my all-time heroes in country and folk and Americana, and this world feels very empty without him.

    Truly devastating to have to make this album, by a Farther, for Son, about his lifetime of creativity ... cut way too short ...
