Holy cow, I don't ever recall the community seeing any pictures of Matorans that have an arm piece that allows their hand to be able to hold a staff. Now this is an incredible discovery, thank you so much for sharing this!
I made the assumption the mcdonald's matoran would have been prototyped with the ability to hold items but lost that so as not to confuse kids with more open axles or choking hazards then necessary. Still it would have been a nice addition! If I could pitch an idea to Lego, it would be for Bionicle McDonald Matoran blind bags like the minifig series! 6-12 foot body, & arm colors, 12 mask molds, and accessories. Great to finally have dates for when the prototype models were made! This archival footage is all so intriguing.... Also thanks so much for being part of our documentary series, Christian, we really appreciated your insight into the series' development!
This is unbelievably interesting, especially seeing those Tohunga prototypes that never saw the light of day until now! The Bionicle community is so talented - I am sure 3D modelers are already working hard on making those arms a reality!
I remember seeing some bits and peaces of these in older Turaga Files back in the day. I was always amazed at how little the Muaka changed from prototype to final design. Something that BIONICLE instilled in me was a love of seeing LEGO sets with new color schemes, so seeing all those June 2000 prototypes identical to the final release sans color is a real treat!!! Some additon colors of Nui Rama appeared on old promotional material, so those red and yellow ones are canon in my book!
It's crazy to see how the base was clearly there. The very clear direction was set early on here for what would become BIONICLE. After some refinement and polishing, BIONCLES were born. Also, those Voodoo heads lowkey would have terrified me as a child 💀..
You and me both! I hope the theme is also treated with the love and respect it deserves while still being new and innovated like the original project was. To think that may future kids might have the same BIONICLE opportunities as I had as a child is an exciting prospect!

Another great video about the creation of our favourite toy line. Everything presented here is interesting, especially the lime tarakava and the Tohunga prototype with their special arms. This piece explains a lot of things related to Mata Nui Online game. Many 3d modelers ave tried to mod regular tohunga arms to give the ability to their tohunga to hold objects, and we finally learn 20 years later that a proper piece was planned in the beginning, but retired during developpement. A development is definitely full of twists and turns. We are already 3 modelers to make this piece a reality, and I hope people will find their satisfaction with their creation. Thank you to share all of these treasures with the community.
this took me back to the old days of looking at MOCs people would post on forums, way back when you had to use third-party image hosts for full sized images
Seeing the tohunga (matoran) early designs was especially incredible, thank you! I now also can’t help but to wonder if Templar had access to these designs, as they feel to me like they strongly fit the aesthetic of MNOG. Now I wonder, what was the justification for changing the left hands? Originally they could hold things, but what we got they didn’t do anything.
They probably saw no point in having these designs because the Mctoran didn’t come with any tools to hold so they went with a simpler and probably cheaper hand design
Those are some stunning prototypes, I think some of them could have really worked for Karzahni inhabitants and given us some more gear centered builds. Curious to see where this rabbit hole of creativity will lead us next. Thank you so much Mr. Faber.
The punching robots seem to be really early prototypes for the Manas crabs. It's interesting to see how such a play function can be translated to a completely new creature. Making the Tarakava actually green does kinda improve the reptilian look of those punching lizards. I wonder why it was changed to turquoise. I am looking forward to more!
The punching robot basically split off into the Manas and the Tarakava. Then the remote controlled character became the Boxor and gave its remote controlled body to the Manas.
"Faber? Is that you? Why do you look 50?" 😂 Thank you so much for sharing this! Been itching to see some of these prototypes for years! If you know the whereabouts of these parts for photography, let me know! Looking forward to seeing more of that style guide!
Damn that last prototype from my view sounded like some crazy thing that could've been added to the bionicle, something like an evil being part chariot part creature, maybe an early version of the dark hunters. Faber is the best to let us see all this.
Man those bonehead designs are fascinating, would be fun to try and recreate them in real life. 5:52 I shall dub thee Swamp Tarakava, scourge of the Le-Wahi underbrush
Its amazing to take a closer look at VooDoo Heads! Thats definitly gonna be helpful for when i introduce them in my Slizer story! And the never seen before Bionicle prototypes are so cool! Lime Tarakava looks sick and that Mindstorms guy is very interrsting but the Tohunga prototypes are my favorite they look so cute! 😍 Thank you for sharing with us your time traveling adventure i cant wait to see the next part!
thanks for providing more clear footage of these prototypes! i'll always prefer the theme BIONICLE would eventually become, but to take a look at what may have been is still interesting nonetheless.
4:50 this one and the one that follows it in a couple seconds feel like they inspired the set 8556 boxor with nuparu, as the set has a leg action mechanic form and an arm action mechanic that both visually have the same appears as well, with the feet having piping etc.
The Dog Jaws, punching guys, and bees were all a part of the gen 1 ‘Rahi’ Line, Makuta corupts them and they have their moments in the comics, Very very nasty in toy combat
Can't wait for all the 3D modelers to recreate that early Matoran arm! Why that didn't go into production is beyond me. Love seeing these early Doo Head prototypes! Bionicle's development is just as fascinating as the series itself, if not more. Just super cool to see all the ideas getting bounced around. Looking forward to seeing what's on that VHS tape!
We have a fourth Tarakava color. I repeat WE HAVE A FOURTH TARAKAVA COLOR. Seriously, it's very cool to see these prototypes. Kinda crazy to see some pieces, like Lewa's axe, in different colors (black and red) when it was only ever officially released in green.
Wow, the coloration for the almost finished sets made much more sense. The wasp like Nui-Rama is yellow, the mosquito one is red and even the crocodile like Tarakava was originally green... never saw a crocodile boxing their prey though.
Thank you for sharing old footage with us. Seeing that the development behind Bionicle will be preserved for people is amazing and hopefully can inspire others to make more cool things in the future.
