I'v always let my crumpets go around twice in the toaster. And l would only pick Warburton's up, if they are shop reduced ( co-op, is the best for this often). However l would give Warburton's credit for bringing The Big 21, to market, and their new softer pitta breads.... Both are revolutionary IMHO.👍
A well toasted and well buttered crumpet is delicious. Even better is double buttered: butter the hot crumpet and the butter will melt into it. Butter is again and you get a nice cold layer on top. Yum! Not too often, though 😄
Love the review Gareth. Must disagree slightly. When you cook them well done they may be similar. I like mine cooked for a shorter time so I can actually taste the difference in texture as well as the taste of the butter. All about personal opinion as you always mention. Keep em coming my friend!

As for butter, I make my own with double cream, and a touch of saly is desired. I have now a pantry full of my butter and it tasted divine. 20 minutes is all it takes, whip up the cream until it's solid, drain off the Buttermilk, and compress in a jar, after having drained the butter with cheesecloth. Put a bottle of water on it, and put in fridge, pull out and shape when cold enough. 6x 300ml of cream, 99p at Tesco...and your butter problems are over. I got masses of it...a big drum full, which had to be cut into shapes of butter. xx
Good morning Gareth! I had a pack of the Tesco jobbies a few months back, you know how it is, go there for a tube of toothpaste and end up needing a taxi home, one reason why ordering online is so good for the bank balance! The disks of delight are only so when slavered with butter/marg/wotever and only if the spread is dribbling down the chin when feasting. You are much too polite a chap to be seen in that state, maybe after /during a booze review? Tesco alternative now added to my Tesco xmas list, along with the stuffing, pigs in duvets, and anything else I can view prior to the delivery date of mid December. If you're ever having soup. Try toasted crumpets to dunk in instead of bread or toast (I have a bit of butter on mine too), its a revelation! They soak up the soup a lot more without falling apart.
Great video! I'm with you on the cook a lot longer... I do mine for one entire cook in the toaster and then another cook for about 30 seconds. When they go darker and crisp to your liking, it's then you'll notice the difference but whether that's good or bad it's entirely up to you. I find the Warbutons cook more evenly through the crumpet as compared to others... Once I've got the outside done to how I like, with other brands, either inside is too crisp due to less thickness or too doughy due to being too thick..... Granted though, there's not much in it for such a huge cost difference plus Tesco differ from Aldi and differ from a local bread supplier Hallet's.... And of course freshness / moisture content plays a role too..... When I put Butter and Bovril on my Warbutons, less leaks out to the other side as compared to others... Right, I'm off back to the cupboard under the stairs... :-)
Glad you did a review on crumpets. It's another one of those that I have tried all others and still can't find anything even close. If you can't taste the difference, then you save money and all is good. It is a rip off with the price, but nothing will ever compare to Warburtons crumpets with Lurpak butter for me. I never use a toaster, always grilled as the bottom needs a lot less time than the top. Firm bottom, lightly browned on top.
I always get Tesco crumpet unless there are some in the reduced bin that can beat Tesco price I agree it’s what you put on I sometimes put cheese spread on nice 👍
Quality review fella...i don't like stiff or rubbery as you put it crumpets which I've found all others are including hovis ones. If onna budget nothing wrong with the cheaper ones at all! Warburtons all the way for me and understand why u may not of but Warburtons are definitely softer but that's just preference 👊👍
I've only recently decided I like crumpets ....if I cook them on one side they are lovely...2 sides not for me. When I lived in England or anytime I'm over visiting I have to have Warburtons bread and I bring some home. We can't get it unfortunately in Northern Ireland. Another enjoyable video...making me wish I'd lifted some yesterday...although never tried Asda ones.
Love me some crumpets lol. Try president butter Gareth it's cultured/fermented butter. Got a lovely tangy taste, I love the stuff. Great review as always buddy. Edit...typo.
Hi Gareth, thanks for another brill review. Both looked good tbh. The only difference is the price. Not had crumpets for ages. Keep up the spot on work. Best wishes from Scotland.
Despite being across the pond, I agree that these are best toasted to where the tops are hard. In the states, the equivalent is called “English muffins” and here they have a sort of perforation about the perimeter so that can be split in half (know as fork split). The most surprising thing was the price. They are the equivalent of a little over 2£ for six at my local supermarket. I prefer them with Irish butter and jam or made into a sandwich with egg, cheese, and ham. Keep the videos coming!
I love crumpets drowned in butter, and of the varieties available locally Warburtons are good, but too expensive when you can buy supermarket own brand versions of which Tesco's are perhaps the weakest. The Warburtons are always 'softer' and need longer toasting. I prefer Lidl's own brand, but don't mind Sainsbury's. The salt content is irelevant as I only use salted butter - either Sainsbury's British butter or Kerrygold.
I agree with you Gareth. I always overcook mine so the top, and particularly the bottom, are both hard and crunchy, with soft middles - a bit Armadillos! lol Loads of butter too, with a sprinkle of salt on the top before eating! THEN they're delish, in my humble view. Thanks again mate. Regards, Dave
Oooh yes I like a bit of crumpet. But who doesn't. Crumpet with butter, peanut butter and honey or lemon curd. Toast a crumpet to your liking then butter and top with a slice of cheese then airfry on grill setting.. Yummo 👍🤤😀 I prefer the wholemeal variety. Top of the range sell for AUD $4.00 a 6 pack now in Australia. The cheapest is half that. I think I'll have a crumpet for breakfast this morning. Thanks Gareth, you do inspire. Cheers 👍😀
I go to the back for all items. Pukka pies, Wiltshire ham, coleslaw, etc. The newest dates are always at the back. But supermarkets have got wise to it and make it more difficult to reach to the back.
Cheers Gareth great review mate. I love Crumpets on a Sunday morning with a boiled egg , something light before a Sunday roast. I always put mine in the toaster twice , nice and crisp and brown .I will have to try the Tesco ones . Thanks buddy 👍👍👍
You're right Gareth. Once you put butter or whatever on the crumpet, you're only going to taste the topping. For 68 pence you could get two more packet of the Tesco cumpets! Unless you're rich or have expensive tastes, like my Mum, nowadays you've got to get more bang for your buck or pow for your pence :)
Interesting review Gareth. Sadly the price cannot be a factor for me,as I have kidney failure. In the Tesco ingredients they use potassium as a preservative, and Warburtons don’t. Sorry to be a bit of a misery, but too much potassium can be a killer. Keep up the great reviews.

Never used to like crumpets as we didn’t have a toaster & they would be done under a grill or on the fire flame. Also, never had Lurpak, which makes a MASSIVE difference to bread products & brings it alive. However, do like trumpets now as my missus has introduced me to Lurpak a few years ago… Good honest review Gareth. What about Crackers, Jacobsen etc?!? 👍..
Excellent stream as always Gareth. Both looked nice , must be smothered in butter. Lurpack is my favourite. Iceland are charging £5 for spreadable Lurpack. Gareth why not do a "butter off" Get the Aldi own Nordpack only £1.99 Don't tell everyone, because they will all be buying it, lol. It's Lurpack packed for Aldi £3 or as you would say 60 bob cheaper 👍🏻👍🏻😁
Hi Gaz , great review ,like my crumpets toasted then put a light layer of marmite/bovril on them then sprinkle grated mature cheddar then bang under the grill until its bubbling , amazing
Hi Gareth, that's so bizarre, I buy crumpets every week all year round and always warburtons and the last week i brought tesco's own to see what they were like as you said there so much cheaper, for me the tesco's one's were awful in comparison but again just my choice, a little tip when you put them in the toaster when they pop up put them down again until they pop up and they are so brown and crispy, 🍻🙏
Gareth I don’t bother with buying crumpets very often as they are really easy to make at home but I must agree with another response to the video that the crumpets from some of the budget supermarkets are quite acceptable.
Love my crumpets very well toasted and crisp.. nearly burnt (like other comment) with just a tiny scrape of butter/ marg on as I don't eat it. Tried a few different ones but always go back to Warburtons.
Gareth after watching your videos I did my own taste test with the rustlers burger n the Lidl version n I tell ya what the Lidl version was cheaper n Tasted so much better
Rubbery dough....and the Tesco...Rubbery dough...Just paying for the name really...Sugar and salt slight difference...but does that really vouch for 68p more per six...I think not. your face when tasting both said it all. Tesco all the way. Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves, as my mother used to say. Honest review as usual. All the best buddy. P.s Hope your girls enjoy the sweets ;-).
Hello Gareth, l always buy own brand supermarket Crumpets the best deal. I saw in the news the Chairman of ASDA, showing the rebranding of the Budget range, which is now only 300 items or so. l guess they dropped a large amount of products that they were losing money on. Funny Tesco has dropped quiet a few budget range products as well.
Evening Gareth from Dublin i found your channel recently and have enjoyed many of your video reviews. i only tried the Tesco crumpets and did them in my toaster but i did not like them and would not buy again. A bit sweet and i did not like the texture x
Aldi crumpets are the boys Gaz. 29p now like, but still a bargain!! Proper fluffy. I was Warburtons all my life but switched to Aldi a few months back. With a bit Aldi Norpack butter and Aldi essentials strawberry jam. Cheap and delicious 😋
My parents used to buy crumpets when I was a child....60 years ago. They'd slather the hot things in real butter which melted into the holes! I hated the hot runny butter.....made me gip. Even now my toast has to be cold before I butter it and I've not bought crumpets in decades. I. Wondering now what crumpets (toasted but gone cold) and then buttered taste like. Will get done from Lidl (top with Lidl's version of spreadable Lurpack). 😊
If I may be so bold, I would like to see a review of "Tesco Firepit Chinese Chicken Thighs" vs Aldi's "Oakhurst Cook From Frozen Chicken Thighs Chinese". Given that it is now BBQ season, I think there will be a lot of interest. Many thanks and keep up the great work.
Great review Gareth. I too like my crumpets very well done- under the grill with British butter and vegemite, yum. So the cheaper crumpets were just as good as the Warburton's. Save £. It makes sense. Thanks for this. 😋
Love mine crispy Gareth like you I use the ones from aldi but I have mine with beans and egg on top basically like beans and egg on toast cause crumpets stay nice and crisp unlike toast goes all soggy and I carnt stand anything soggy like bread but using crumpets stays nice and firm plus its awsome lol
Forgotten last time had some crumpet!...Ty for reminding me!...well done real butter and little marmite fits the bill...ASDA's be fine...I know how to rock my Friday nights!
Great review gareth and quite correct they just taste the same and even before you said it I knew you were going to say all you will taste is the butter and I am glad I am not the only one that likes them crispy they taste much better PS I worked with a girl who had nothing but sugar on her crumpets not for me but I suppose it's just like a pancake??👍👍
Please can you compare different - FROZEN MASHED POTATO - & see how they compare.. I buy this sometimes as it convenient.. but wonder which is best.. ty from Leeds x
I had the same experience with the Aldi sour dough ones over 3 times the price of the standard one's and I honestly preferred the cheaper ones so we all live and learn
I like Warburtons, they cook better IMO and have a better texture. Any chance of a Soreen Malt Loaf review mate? Aldi and Lidl do one and are way cheaper :)
I'm in the Warburtons camp as regards crumpets even though their bread is poor. Seems to be an ongoing offer on the latter as 9 for £1 is the norm in my area of Cumbria. I did try some M&S crumpets a while ago but very disappointing. Butter of choice is Kerrygold.
Yeah the top needs to be proper crispy :D I always remember having them as a kid and for some reason eating all the sides off and then pulling off the crispy top part , then eating the spongy butter soaked innards and finally the crispy bottom part, now I just eat the damn thing 😂 , i have found cheaper ones can be a bit dry though the expensive ones aren’t much better if they’re getting near the date , I really want crumpets now I’m going to have to go out and get some !!
We buy aldi and they are about 22p I think but at the end of the e day they are made in the same factory and just packaged for different stores , it is down to once again that little word budget . Good review though Gareth.
Well toasted then a little butter while still red hot. Topped with peanut butter, I have 2 every morning driving to work. They all taste the same. Mine are usually Kingsmill
Love crumpets, got to be on the crispy side for me (virtually burnt!) I must admit I tend to just buy shops own make ones as I think there fine tbh, the warburtons ones are lovely mind & nice & thick too, but not really worth it for the price difference 👍
They need to be hot too. I toast mine for at least 6 minutes then quickly load em up with a ready loaded butter knife while they're still piping hot 😆 👍
Mmmmmm I'm CRAVING Crumpets right now! Gotta be honest... I love warburtons they are softer. Like you though I like them well done and HOT put hhe butter on then warm them again.... WHYYY do the shops have to be shut right now 😔 lol

Great review Gareth. You have 35 thousand subscribers congratulations. Is there a Friday night party on tonight I believe there would be?
not tonight sorry
Love my crumpets very well toasted and crisp.. nearly burnt (like other comment) with just a tiny scrape of butter/ marg on as I don't eat it. Tried a few different ones but always go back to Warburtons.
Do not fear the butter.
Funny Tesco has dropped quiet a few budget range products as well.
cheers pal
Evening Gareth from Dublin i found your channel recently and have enjoyed many of your video reviews. i only tried the Tesco crumpets and did them in my toaster but i did not like them and would not buy again. A bit sweet and i did not like the texture x
cheers Linda thankyou x
Aldi crumpets are the boys Gaz. 29p now like, but still a bargain!! Proper fluffy.
I was Warburtons all my life but switched to Aldi a few months back. With a bit Aldi Norpack butter and Aldi essentials strawberry jam. Cheap and delicious 😋
i take it you are an Aldi fan boy / convert then ?...welcome to the club :-).
@@johniksushibar165 100% mate! Get most of my shopping there nowadays.
It's a great club to be in bud! 😁👊
I love crumpets!! I'm same like the tops toasted... The Warburtons are lovely... But the cheaper ones are ones I buy ... Xx
Spot on captain. I'm always buy the value ones .. Good review 👍
cheers Captain
love a bit off Crumpet Gareth , i sometimes put a slice of cheece on and let it melt , Happy Friday Bro!
cheers Gaz have a good one.
Ah Lurpak spreadable butter since 1901. Love me some tescos crumpets stacked and dripping in honey or syrup.
Cheers pal
Great review Gareth. I too like my crumpets very well done- under the grill with British butter and vegemite, yum. So the cheaper crumpets were just as good as the Warburton's. Save £. It makes sense. Thanks for this. 😋
thanks 😊
@@BaldFoodieGuy You are welcome man. 😋
They need cooking until the top browns?
Love mine crispy Gareth like you I use the ones from aldi but I have mine with beans and egg on top basically like beans and egg on toast cause crumpets stay nice and crisp unlike toast goes all soggy and I carnt stand anything soggy like bread but using crumpets stays nice and firm plus its awsome lol
Thanks Steve yes we shop at Aldi mostly.
Try them with corned beef done under the grill. Put some butter on top. Eat them while still hot. 😎 Another idea is to use them as a mini pizza base.
Forgotten last time had some crumpet!...Ty for reminding me!...well done real butter and little marmite fits the bill...ASDA's be fine...I know how to rock my Friday nights!
Great review gareth and quite correct they just taste the same and even before you said it I knew you were going to say all you will taste is the butter and I am glad I am not the only one that likes them crispy they taste much better PS I worked with a girl who had nothing but sugar on her crumpets not for me but I suppose it's just like a pancake??👍👍
cheers Robert, yes stick the butter and they all the same.
My pen pal in hawaaii has been watching you Gareth. She said she loves your accent, 😊
Please can you compare different - FROZEN MASHED POTATO - & see how they compare.. I buy this sometimes as it convenient.. but wonder which is best.. ty from Leeds x
Maybe do a butter-off? I tend to buy supermarket own brands as they're cheaper. Would like to see your opinion.
Can you do a review on expensive shampoo and conditioners vs aldi shampoo and conditioners and see which Are best.
Thank you, kerry gold is great.
The faces you pull says it all lolol , I like them well well done with butter
Yeah the top needs to be proper crispy :D I always remember having them as a kid and for some reason eating all the sides off and then pulling off the crispy top part , then eating the spongy butter soaked innards and finally the crispy bottom part, now I just eat the damn thing 😂 , i have found cheaper ones can be a bit dry though the expensive ones aren’t much better if they’re getting near the date , I really want crumpets now I’m going to have to go out and get some !!
I like them brown on top and the bottom hard and let the butter soak through, also like cheese melted on the top, a quick blown torch job!!!
We buy aldi and they are about 22p I think but at the end of the e day they are made in the same factory and just packaged for different stores , it is down to once again that little word budget . Good review though Gareth.
i dont mind tesco or warburton......Asda is no good but thats my opinion only great vid Gareth
Really like them well done and crispy
Well toasted then a little butter while still red hot. Topped with peanut butter, I have 2 every morning driving to work. They all taste the same. Mine are usually Kingsmill
Love crumpets, got to be on the crispy side for me (virtually burnt!) I must admit I tend to just buy shops own make ones as I think there fine tbh, the warburtons ones are lovely mind & nice & thick too, but not really worth it for the price difference 👍
So good!
Your right esp if on a budget and a family eating crumpets its a big saving
