In the early days of Cherry Grove development (1960's/70's), we called the manmade bodies of water between the houses, the "channels". So much more pleasant-sounding than canals or creeks. 🥴
Not mosquitos. No-see-ums are tiny little gnats that you're not even aware of until later when you break out in bug bites that itch horribly! For many people, the reaction to these gnat bites is worse than mosquito bites.

The area is, yes. Most of the homes themselves do not take on water because they are raised up.
