Dude this kicked ass. Saw Mars a few times in late 70's and early 80's and I think he's the best I ever saw live. His playing was through the roof. As a kid we tried to do this whole album note for note. You nailed it!
Thanks Tim - much appreciated! Mars was definitely one of those guys that brought something very different to the table - melody, harmony, theory, and some funk. He could double lines, harmonize lines, he knew how to support the song, work with the entire band, and tastefully fill in space. That late 70s era was a pretty cool time for rock bass and live albums. This GFWYK with Mars, Derringer Live with Kenny Aaronson, Mahogany Rush live with Paul Harwood, Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous. Great time for music.
That band with Mars was incredible. Saw them once in New York and another time in Texas. They were on fire! Mars just had a funky way to compliment the song, compliment Pat, lock in with the drums, musically fill in space. Not a lot of guys in the genre that could so that.
Peter Mars Cowling from Grimsby here in the UK, now lives in Florida I think, best rock bassist of all ,as you say laying some soul disco funk lines in with his vast sonic palate of bass lines have modelled myself on his style for years, you captured a few of his nuances John can be tricky very dexterous well done!!
Thank you Ian! I greatly appreciate the kind words. Mars is something of an enigma and truly created his own thing. Agreed - dexterity is essential to understanding how he played and there are nuances that cannot be picked up without paying close attention to how he constructed his lines. One of the best!
Another fantastic title, you still offer us an excellent version, again congratulations !!! big like my friend !!!!

Gordian Not thank you. Sad to know he’s gone. R.I.P. Mars.
Mars ruled. Most underrated bass player/musician ever. Thanks for the vid, and you’re nailing it! Damn I wish we could jam!
Mars did indeed rule! Thank you for the kind words. He was a big inspiration.
Some people have “it” some don’t. Mars had “IT” in spades.
Mars Cowling was extremely awesome player full of packages...RIP
You’re kicking ass on this cover and helping other bassists. Good on ya!
Thank you Jeff! Happy New Year to you!
Loved his bass . I started learning the bass in 1975. PTB back then was awesome stuff. Nice job.
That was a great era with a lot of great music. PTB and Mars really stood out. Nothing like it. Cheers!

Actually got to see Mars play with Pat at a club on 6th Street in Austin back in ‘89. Was not disappointed.

As a bass player myself Mars was and still is my Bass Hero . I see all kinds of theory spliced into the funkiest thumpers in rock bar none.
