Hey hey Zee! Thanks for the great reviews as always. Trick taking is something I can usually get to the table. Except Bottle Imp which manages to blow peoples minds, even experienced trick taking players. Maybe I will add this to the collection.
Great review! I'd totally agree that this has a ton of nuance and is definitely better for experienced trick-taking players.
I've found the tiny tim variant helps with beginners, but it's still not the best intro trick-taker haha.
Also, the beyond variant has another variation from Time Palatrix where players still play 3 cards before resolving, but they choose which of the 4 slots per 'round' I love that variation too
Hi Taylor! Yes, we also definitely recommend recommend the Tiny Tim variant. It removes bidding from the game and makes it a fair bit easier for newcomers!
“Flipped on its top hat” classic!
I think for scoring, it would be less punishing if the purple doors were still 2 points but the red door was just 1 or perhaps the red door you don’t score for, but you don’t bust either.
Great, thorough review, Zee!
Appreciate this review! Backed it and can't wait to play this Christmas with my folks, who are big hearts players.
This one has been sitting on my shelf waiting to make it to the table having been second place to Factory Funner which came in the same delivery (and one of their game bags which are brilliant). Love a trick taking game so will definitely want to try this one out but maybe not with the family first so a good look out there thanks Zee!
Great review Zee! I'm not really a fan of trick taking games, but I appreciate them trying to do something a little different.
I’ve played Oh, Hell most of my life with my family, so I got this as a game to change it up a little and really found the mechanics interesting. Great review and explanation
To fix the scoring, it might be a good idea to have a two trick handicap for 1 point each and a one trick handicap for 2 points each, anyone who gets exact amount gets a bonus. 🤷♂️
I feel this would be VERY hard to predict number of tricks. There is just too much unknown. I think I would prefer tiny tim mode in this one.
My group religiously plays Skull King. I backed this one. I think I'm going to have them try another TT game before I have them try this as this seems like it could fall flat if it's not introduced to people that aren't ready for this level of TT complexity.
I'm trying to understand where doors fit into the story of A Christmas Carol...
I have had my eye on this one. Great review! Zee never lets us down!
My family are trick taking veterans and fans but you hit the unintuitive thing on the head. My 70 yr old parents really struggled with this one and pretty much just played left to right and didn't understand the intricacies of how it played after two plays. Gonna give it another shot but they got pretty frustrated.
That proves my point! This would NOT be a good game for those for “know” and have played trick-taking for a very long time - because it is so counter-intuitive for them. It would be A LOT easier to explain the game to someone who has never played trick-taking, because they have no basis for comparison - for example, “that doesn’t make sense, it is supposed to be like this…”, etc.
8:04 “This is a trick-taking game for trick-taking fans”… Not only for trick-taking fans, Zee. Alex Radcliffe from BoardGameCo who didn’t usually like trick-taking games loves this one!
Ha ha tricky, I get it
I play a lot of TT games with my wife and mother. This was the worst one I've ever played. The way suits are set is nonsense, and the hearts/trump makes it even more chaotic. Everyone has different tastes, but for us, we had no desire to play this one again. We will stick to Chimera, Haggis, Tichu, Planet 9, Nokosu Dice, Nyet and Fox in the Forests.
