Wow, this is very impressive!! I definitely love the OG diner better than the AG one (watching your comparison video next! XP), but the colors are so dark! With your repaint, you made it so much better! I really want this piece for my dolls, but I'm not so sure I'd be able to find it. And if I did, I have NO idea as to where I'd put it! XD We'll see. Thank you so much for your tutorial! I might use it in the event I get the diner. :)

I love the OG diner so much better than AG's , especially after the repaint! I like the way it's built more. If I had it, I might paint it black and white checkered floor with red seats, or I might match the seaside diner:) great job!

Btw I love pastels, and it looks far better than the original! I'm scared to do it, but you're amazing. I think I'd do it though. Seeing and having both, which do u honestly like better? I was in LA and vegas this summer, wish I picked the OG one up for the $108 American you guys pay. Then I could justify buying both. I'm not sure w our dollar being bad. How awful for mastermind toys to charge that much!! Target and other American stores don't ship the diner in particular to canada either, likely because of the weight :(.

I don't use American girl dolls anymore but it's fun to watch you do DIYs! Anyways, I like the AG one because the detailing is nicer and I like how the seats aren't plastic, but (for lack of a better word) plush. Knowing that the other one is probably significantly cheaper but still good quality I'd have to give it to them in terms of likeliness of purchasing.

Ok, so now I have to repaint the diner I bought the granddaughter for Christmas. I love the repaint.
I loved the OG diner so much, that to add realism I bought THREE (yes). What diner only has one booth and two stools? And one sugar container and only 1 mustard and ketchup set? : ) The whole taking-apart thing was just as you showed, all-too familiar, ha ha! All those screws; though I opted to snip the wires so that two booth units could go back-to-back like a Denny's - or however I want them to go - in fact I left the brown and orange because that also said "Denny's..." Not EVERYTHING in the 1950's was pink and aqua, so I left those as is. However that black and hot-magenta floor is too garish, so I may opt to do what you did! Great idea! White with accents looked really nice! The island units: I left two as is (I don't care for the hearts, but at a distance they sort of read as a checkerboard pattern). The third island I wrapped a pliable happy yellow Foamie (from Michaels) around and used that to make a 50's movie theater concession stand (but that's a whole 'nuther story). I also opted to cut out the chalkboard for the diner (power tools, ugh), and make it a pass-through, with the discontinued silver-colored Our Generation kitchen behind it to resemble something of an institutional kitchen area. A strip of plastic or wood the width of the window was attached so that "orders" could be placed there. All it needs is warming lamps! I think I used a Jiff peanut butter jar lid, painted it chrome, and attached some of the OG receipts to it, then hot glued it to the inside top-lip of the pass-through, to look like the rotating unit diners often had where orders were placed - if one were more patient, I'm sure it could be made to actually rotate! On another diner I typed up a "menu board" in an era-appropriate font on the computer, printed it to size, and inserted that over the chalkboard - again, I thought it a little more realistic than a chalkboard, although I could see that perhaps that would be fun for kids (to write stuff). Same with the concession stand. I customized my "menu" ("Fresh Warm Candy Bars," "Hot & Cold Popcorn, As you Like it!," "Artichoke Pops," etc), but if you Google-search 50's diner menu boards, there are several there that you could just print out as is, as long as it is scaled to fit the chalkboard area. Do it in pieces if you wish. I also YANKED that pink phone off the wall (not easy, but easier if you have a steak knife) (adult supervision, ahem) and spray painted it a realistic gloss black, and later hot-glued it back to the wall. I Google-searched "vintage pay phone" and found a much nicer insert for the wall phone, as opposed to the plain "local call" insert. The stools were problematic, because I did not want them all the pink, and wanted a few turquoise ones, however the plastic TOP is a more rubbery material than the sides, and though it holds the paint, it remains sticky to this day. I dust a fine layer of baking soda over it if I am going to have someone (or something) sit there, such that they do not get paint on them/stick to the stool. Next time around I will figure out something else...There's also a way-cool floor-model style jukebox that was made in the - 70's? 80's? Maybe? Not sure - but it plays cassette tapes and is made to look like a late 50's/early 60's Seeburg. It is a LITTLE large, scale wise, but placed at a distance, it works great with it all. They can be found on eBay, if one is willing to go that far! But it's worth it, it lights up and is very realistic and you can have long playing cassettes in them (but, no one knows what cassettes are anymore, so, just plug in the part that lights up and you will dig it. Perhaps someone will make something similar that plays CDs). There are also some REALLY cool in-scale old fashioned cash registers out there on eBay, they are (were) salesman's samples and are exact replicas of the actual thing. Again, they can be pricey (though I did find one for $15 on Etsy), but they look soooo nice sitting on the rotating dessert stand. The other stand I put the cake/pie stand on (there's not much room on the counter for it, what with everything else). I also found an adding machine-type register (same company that made the diner-supermarket style registers) and placed that in the concession stand. IF you guys are that enthusiastic and really want to make these dioramas pop, GO to EBAY! Ha ha! THERE you will find that jukebox (with patience) and a fabulous metal cash register with a real drawer that comes out. There aren't tons of them out there, but, again, patience. Also, if ya wanna really go crazy, touch up some of that GREAT diner food! The item that bothered me most was the odd sandwich-y thing, with the pink globs inside (tuna fish? Meatball?), but with a repaint it can be any kind of sandwich you want; also most of that food can be yanked off (steak knife again) and this way you get extra plates, and customize your servings with the loose food. There are so many options; I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video, AND the fact you show brand-names, otherwise a lot of us would be lost. The stuff that holds to plastic really is swell. Happy dining!

Rudy, I love the tutorial about how to take it apart and paint it. It looks like a big job but worth it to make it what you want it to be. If I pained our OG diner, I would go red, white and black, perhaps, because I really love the saturation of red. I'm not a fan of turquoise, blue and pink, but I do love it on your diner because they are soothing colors! Great job.

I'm in canada, and u can only order the OG diner from mastermind toys for a whopping $219 Canadian dollars which w our dollar being bad now is around $180 American or $175 :(. I ordered it last night, but am second guessing now. In canada I can order the seaside diner from chapters/indigo for $325 Canadian minus 5-10%. Which would u keep? It's for me my daughter has outgrown them, so I'm an adult collector. While I like the accessories, food and phone w OG I love the chrome, booth and sturdier seats w AG.
This was such a cute, informative, fun video to watch! I don't even have an American Girl doll, or any of the sets, let alone this one, but it was really cool to see how you completely revamped it. I'm definitely a new fan and sub!! (P.S. LOVE the cute pink nail polish! ^_^)
This is amazing! So much better than the original version! It looks like one diner. The AG part looks like the barstool area usually in front of the order station at diners and the OG version looks like the place you sit down to eat and their area looks more like a dessert/bakery area and the AG area looks like the meal area
I know this post is older but my daughter got the OG Diner for her birthday this year. She actually requested this one over the AG one because it looked like she would get more things to play with. Smart girl. Neither of us likes the color scheme but it was well worth the money. I'm so glad I found this video. Definitely going to paint hers!
The OG Diner honestly looks really good along side with the American Girl Diner! It looks more like an extension, either the front of the diner or just another side to it, the placement possibilities to make the play space pretty big sounds pretty fun! If only the pink matched a little better it'd be perfect. I think if you're going to buy the Seaside Diner, invest in the OG diner too and put the effort into repainting it to match. The look fantastic together.
I am asking for Christmas the ag and og diner a rolling hockey bag because I love hockey and I play for woolwich wild and my bag is the one where you have to carry it and a 18 inch dollhouse😉

Did you use any kind of sealant? Or did you just use the paint+primer? Has the paint held up so far? I'm planning on doing this project, but I have a 4 year old who plays a bit rough. Wondering if the paint can actually withstand her.
WOW! The final product was amazing! It looks so so so much better now! I think before you re-did there diner I liked MaryEllen's diner better but now after that paint job so well done I have to say I the OG diner is better!

I like yours better than the American Girl diner. I do like American Girl dolls but i feel the clothes and accessories are very over priced. The dolls are reasonable but then the kids want everything to go with it and that is where I drew the line for my grandaughters. You did a fantastic job and yours had a lot of accessories and probably cost about 1/4 of what you would have paid for the AG. Again, fantastic job.

I personally think the AG diner is better even though the OG one does have way more accessories so what I did is take other food accessories from another OG pack and gave it to the Sea Side diner. I like the AG one better because it fits my AG dolls better and I like the colors way more.I would repaint the OG diner but I guess the project is kinda big, not that I am lazy but I don't think my parents would alloy me to do that!🙂

Omg that's amazing.its way way way better than the before one. I like it cause it has a happier and more welcoming feel and cozy feel the other one was a bit dark,but the reprinted one is lighter and I like the accent colors and designs. This small things bring it together.

I like the original colors but the colors you painted it we're pretty and I like the Our Generation Diner better because the AG Diner is just really small and it doesn't come with a lot of stuff and the Our Generation One does
