Catherine Louise Pirkis (1841-1910) was an English writer, who wrote numerous short stories and various novels. She is best known for her detective stories, starring Loveday Brooke, a respected professional investigator, who represents the first female detective created by a female writer. Her adventures appeared in Ludgate Magazine between 1893 and 1894, and that same year they were collected in an anthology titled “The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective.”
"The Black Bag Left on a Door Step" is the first story in the Loveday Brooke series. When thieves steal valuable jewelry from a country house, the police suspect it is an internal operation, Agent Bates and Detective Loveday Brooke will try to discover who the culprits are.
