Guy Clark is amazing! He is a Master Storyteller and a beast on the guitar when he wants to cut loose. I really want Y'all to react to his song "The Guitar". He definitely cuts loose in it and shows what a beast on guitar he is! Another great song of his is "The Randall Knife". He paints such a vivid picture with his words and delivery, for me it's like watching a full length movie in 5 minutes!
Guy was known for his integrity and his merciless editing. This is far from his best performance. He lead an interesting life. He built guitars. He built boats. There’s a documentary called Without Getting Killed Or Caught, about his life. With Guy, every word is important. This is the first time I’ve heard him sing with a woman. Verlon Thompson usually accompanied him, picking and singing harmony. The style of music is Americana.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Guy Clark. This wouldn’t have been my top choice for your first Guy Clark song. He is known as a songwriter more than a singer. His top hit as a singer is LA Freeway. His biggest hit as a songwriter is The Carpenter by John Conlee. His best song has been recorded by pretty much everyone in country music Desperado’s Waiting For A Train. Johnny Cash has recorded many of his songs.
Just for reference Dublin is a small town in Central Texas. Guy Clark is one heck of a songwriter and I enjoy his performances. I really enjoyed this reaction.
I was wondering if that was the Dublin he was refering to. My Husband and I rented a space on a ranch in Hico, lived there for a few yrs. Beautiful area.
@@tracylamb2971 it is beautiful. My sister and brother-in-law live in hico. I was born and raised in Bosque county I'm very familiar with the area I live in Waco now
@@jerricocke987 me and the girl this song brings to my mind used to argue whether he was in Ireland or Texas. With all the other references to Europe I always imagine he was in Ireland. but only he knows for sure
this was Guy Clark...master song writer and story teller...you have no idea the impact he had on the folk/Americana genre...along with John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Nanci Griffith and more...well worth a deep dive.
Oh hey again guys. I forgot to mention something earlier. I.W. Harper got a tongue in cheek songwriting credit once. Merle Haggard was doing a concert and was introducing a new song. He said this is brand new. In fact we just finished it on the way up here on the bus. Me and Jim Beam and IW Harper. That was Merle. Guy wrote a song called Black Diamond Strings and there is a video of him singing it with EmmyLou and they mention IW Harper in the chorus, but they refer to it as 1 (one) W Harper. I'm guessing as a joke because a lot of people thought thats what it was called. The song mentions a family called the Crowells. Rodney Crowell is a country music star as well. He was a member of Emmy's band back in the day and also was Johnny Cash's son-in-law for a few years. really talented musician, singer and writer in his own right too. Here is a link to another video from the Trans Atlantic sessions of Guy and EmmyLou doing the song. Enjoy. ua-cam.com/video/BOzpPOXfymA/v-deo.html
Hey guys. There was a series of TV shows, concerts and albums done over in Ireland. A bunch of truly great musicians, singers and writers from America were joined by singers and musicians from Ireland. The young lady is one of the Irish singers who was part of it. Guy Clark is a Hall of Fame songwriter. You should listen to his song The Guitar. There are some magical videos from the collaborative effort. Many of the performers were bluegrass and american country folk types. However you did have EmmyLou and several other big stars as well. To hear another brilliant songwriter who was part of the American talent pool involved in all this you guys should check out some music from Iris DeMent. I found a video and am leaving y'all a link to Iris and EmmyLou doing an iris song during one of these sessions. They were called The TransAtlantic sessions. The guy playing the dobro is Jerry Douglas widely recognized as the best in the business. Hope you enjoy!! ua-cam.com/video/niz2YJBOjCg/v-deo.html
I love Guy Clark and have requested "The Guitar" several times! Guy Clark is so amazingly talented in so many different areas. In my opinion he was one of the best storytellers out there, and one of the greatest songwriters ever!
I like his style of writing and I like his style of singing. Simplicity and meaning! The song Randall Knife would be another great story for your ears and hearts!
I love that one too! Guy paints such a vivid picture with his lyrics and delivery in that one, for me it's like watching a full length movie in about 5 minutes!
I couldn't agree more!!! I've been requesting "The Guitar" for a long time. Guy Clark is one of the best songwriters and storytellers ever in my opinion!
I would have picked his song "The Guitar" as your introduction to Guy....based solely on your appreciation for the guitar. But you really can't go wrong with any of his songs.
I 100% agree with you! I've requested "The Guitar" several times over the years I've been watching them. I also love his song "The Randall Knife". He paints such a vivid picture in that one, for me it's like watching a full length movie in 5 minutes! I'm so glad they have been introduced to Guy Clark! Hopefully they do more reactions to his songs!
if you want more of the same look up his song desperados waiting on a train if you want something different from him check out homegrown tomatoes or la freeway. Those are my favorite songs of him
How has guitars & Cadillacs by Dwight yoakam slipped through this channel for 3 years....my mind is blown. Hi, I been a quiet lurker for years you guys are great ❤
A lot of Guy Clark's songs are just raw emotion, with every word carefully chosen for effect. Maybe the only songwriter I can think of who chose words as carefully was Leonard Cohen. Sometimes I find him hard to listen to just because of the intentioinal lack of comfort, for want of a better way to put it. "The Randall Knife" is another song of his I'd recommend, that's if anything even rawer than this.
One of my absolute favourite songwriters. Check out a song called the guitar. Great story and it tends to feature some amazing guitar work by his buddy Ferlin. Another one that’s worth checking out is the last gunfighter ballad. It’s another one that’s a little bit minimal but again a great song which was recorded😅 by Johnny Cash. I’m not actually sure which of the two wrote it.
I think they've said in the past that they both have seen it and love it. If I remember correctly they said because they've both seen it and know it well, it will take a bribe to get it on the channel.
ua-cam.com/users/shortsSXYhUcCI4lQ?si=M_fcwq6XR6K-rFYr This is a song by somebody you've had before on your channel and it's just a short , but it's a rewrite of mamma's broken heart but for men
One of the greatest songwriters of all time. Do more

⬆ This!
Guy was/is the king of the Texas songwriters. If you wanted to be taken seriously in that scene he had to approve of you. He was a giant.

I was actually going to request Black Diamond Strings because of the I(1)W Harper line, but Dublin Blues is among my favorite Guy Clark songs
@@wgj4everlong426 Couldn't agree more. Guy was a poet. Brilliant wordsmith.

From Texas, his house in Nashville was famous for being a party hangout for songwriters and musicians.
PLEASE- listen to his live version (with Verlon) on “the guitar” you will love it I promise, right up your alley!
I couldn't agree more!!! I've been requesting "The Guitar" for a long time.

I'll add "The Guitar" and "The Randall Knife". He paints such a vivid picture in both of them it's almost like watching a movie!
How has guitars & Cadillacs by Dwight yoakam slipped through this channel for 3 years....my mind is blown.
Hi, I been a quiet lurker for years you guys are great ❤
I’ve heard of Guy Clark but not heard this song. Really enjoyed this.
Been into to Guy since 70 or 71

That song might just be the definition of "Less Is More"! It's right up there with "Oh Death" in my opinion!
Such an interesting story….Keep Austin Weird vibes. Talented.
A couple of the commenters already mentioned "The Guitar", I would also add "The Randall Knife". Give them a listen.
Those were the 2 I recommend also!!! They both are so amazing and will be right up their alley!

Guy wrote it
I suggest doing LA Freeway by Guy Clark. There is a great version of it on UA-cam from Austin City Limits.
Welcome to THE GREAT STATE OF TEXAS, Gentleman! Guy Clark is a legend in these parts!
sorry no name guys guess I forgot.you did Anyhow I Love You by Guy for me awhile back It was the song me and the wife danced to at our wedding.
Randell knife is a good one.
My favorite of his ❤
I suggested that one too! It really shows off his story telling ability. Guy Clark is the master of "less is more"
If you want minimalist Johnny Cash, listen to his version of Hurt (Nine Inch Nails song).
Minimalist and grabs you and holds you even after the song is over ( or song/video, combo is worth it).
I think they've said in the past that they both have seen it and love it. If I remember correctly they said because they've both seen it and know it well, it will take a bribe to get it on the channel.
Guy Clark is amazing. To me his vibe is a little reminiscent of Kris Kristofferson.
One Day At A Time by John Walsh is pretty good I recommend that if you haven't heard it already.
KEKTH YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO DON RICH
Gary allen "get off of the pain" from your budget subscriber
Yous all need some LA Freeway...
Guy Clark was a great songwriter, and this is one of my favorite songs of his. Not a great performance though.
