As a resident of Chongqing where Gen. Stilwell spent a couple of years, I have a particular and strong emotion toward Gen. Stilwell, not only his contribution to China in World War 2 but also the recalling the unique time between American people and Chinese people. Appreciate this amazing journey.
My Father served under the General in Burma. My dad respected him very much. One story he told, they were starving, hadn't been resupplyed for months. The officers asked for volunteers to go into the jungle to hunt for game. My dad a country boy volunteered, killed monkey and birds. The officers got the birds but Dad said monkey was good!
Thanks Nya & Steven for this video of your grandfather General Stilwell in your American style 😊, I have read about him in Miss Barbara Tuchman historical narrative on the First World war in her four series covering The great war. But General Stilwell greater efforts in the second world war in the the in East Asia, the making of the Stilwell Road, the Anti - Japanese war memorial, the pub visited by American soldiers & General Stilwell, the Cemetary of American & Chinese soldiers like the Arlington War memorial. In the end it was a wonderful epitaph to your grandfather's memory. But as Steven exemplified that it also shows the futility of Wars.
My hearty thanks to Nya and Steven for making us available this wonderful video of your grandfather General Joseph Stilwell. I happened to live at Ledo about 20 years back and I have traced a little on inside Indian side and a little beyond Pangsau Pass on Stilwell road. I often wondered how this great road looks like on the Chinese side but because of your kind efforts I am able to see it today. It was great to see the grandchildren of legendary General. The way you expressed your views in the video is very sweet and heart touching. Thanks once again and regards. Arun Bhatt
Your Grandfather depised Chiang Kai Shek. Called him Peanut. How come you did not follow the trail into Burma? I’ve read every book about your Grandfather. Great man. Ended up commanding the Army on Okinawa.
Wish they could visit the road from the India side in Ledo, Assam. I stay like a hour drive from Ledo and have heard their grandfather's legacy so many times. Hope they visit this end as well.
Thank you so much for liking our show. PBS has already aired 4 years ago. Please check our website for more information. Thanks. www.d3mediagroup.com/tracing-the-steps-of-general-stillwell/
General Stillwell was a man of several contradictions. He was a registered Republican, therefore automatically an anti-communist. Yet he analysed that a temporary truce with Mao Zedong could prove productive against the Japanese. He was considered a racist even by standards of the time. Yet he thought of the Chinese soldier to be the equivalent of his British and American counterparts and therefore setup a training school for the Chinese in Ramgarh. He was a General officer, yet he would go as low as leading battalion sized positions into battle, forcing his rivals to tag him as a "3 star batallion and regiment commander of WW2". His legacy was sumwat tarnished due to the hysteria of the Cold War after the fall of China to communists. But his strategies like the opening of the Ledo Road and relief operations in Northern Burma were commended even by a General of the stature of William Slim.
They say early in the film that General Stilwell arrived in China in 1942... Actually, between WW1 & WW2, Stilwell served three tours in China, where he mastered spoken and written Chinese and was the military attaché at the US legation in Beijing from 1935 to 1939.
Hello Nya - It's Traci Stoick (now Schafer) . I still have a picture of Erie ... when we drove her from CA to CO. I hope you're doing well.... I don't know how to safely get back in touch without giving you my email or phone number. I know this shows an image of "Schafer Vet Clinic" ... but I sold it .... and am not there... just in case you looked there. Thank you for sharing your story....
Excellent documentary. I hope all American students get a chance to watch how American and China were brothers and sisters in arms, and how the both peoples can still have respect for each other. Sadly, it is politicians who taint the belief that we can live in harmony and peace and disturb the benefits and betterment of both nations.
I am so surprised that China has such a high respect for a American war Genreral who happened to be stationed at the China - Burma theater of war in the second world war & have preserved all remembrance of General Stilwell, the Pub, the Anti - Japanese war memorial, the cometary of both the American soldiers/ Chinese soldiers like the Arlington Cometary .I appreciate so the Stilwell road.
It were the American politicians who tarnished General Stillwell's legacy by falsely accusing him of being uncooperative with the super corrupt Chiang and the eventual fall of Chinese mainland to Mao. Stillwell, a registered Republican, was an anti-communist. But from a soldier's POV, he understood the communists could come in handy for an offensive against the Japanese. And despite being a 4 star General and the highest ranking American officer in the theatre, he was at the front supervising even batallion level operations. History may not be so kind to him, but there can't be denying the fact that Joseph Stillwell was a fairly competent commander BUT at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Are you some a IAS official in Ledo, Assam by chance or a Municipal commissioner, or Commissioner of Police in what capacity would like Grand Children of General Joseph Stilwell have met you? 😊😊
General Stilwell, a true American.
A hero.
Gone but not forgotten.

Lot"s of love from assam.
Cometh the hour cometh the man.
wonder how these folks are so young when the General's prime years for fathering would have been 1915-25? My grandpa was born in 1900 and I'm 57.
