You can do it with any maple tree, not just sugar maple but sugar maple has the most sugar. Actually, big leaf maples have the largest sap flowing season from November to March. This year I’m going out and tapping trees in my town and making syrup.
Yes, you can drink the sap directly from the trees -- but it'd be like drinking maple water. The slightest whisper of maple flavour / sweetness, but almost entirely water. In case anyone's wondering, starting sap to final syrup is a 40 to 1 ratio (meaning, for simplicity's sake, let's say you want a gallon of syrup. You'll need 40 gallons of sap to boil down, as the water content is so high. Most healthy maples can give you around 10 gallons of sap -- so you don't need many maple trees, just a lot of their sap).
In Quebec, every year in spring it's the maple sirup time or, as we call it "le temps des sucres". We go to "cabanes à sucre", which are the place where they make maple sirup, with our families and we eat a big and savoury lunch. Then, we go outside and eat this toffee, or "tire d'érable", on some snow (not like her tho, it doesn't look good in her cup).
I already knew how maple syrup is made thanks to an episode of curious George I actually used to think the syrup was sweet from the moment it came out of the tree just like he did. (Of course I was smol but I still remember learning about it)
Ok….that answered that! Lol. I thought it was a syrupy sap that came out of the tree kind of like honey. Awesome to know. I was all confused about why it was maple WATER.
So for the toffee usually you want a bigger spot of snow to poor it over. And by the look of what you had it was not ready, it was still too early to poor. It should not dig that much in the snow. You poor some on the snow, it’ll cool down and start getting hard. You take it with your stick while it’s still a little hot, and eat it. You shouldn’t have to eat snow with it… Also, it you’re lucky enough to be able to get some hot toffee right before it’s ready to go on the snow, put it in a bowl and mix it. You’ll get maple butter, which feels like soft sugar cream and taste like maple. If you do it when the toffee is ready you’ll get a harder mix, which ends up closer to maple sugar. Still taste really good. But butter feels a lot better on a toast. Spring is the season where I am at risk of getting diabetes… lol
Aww man, it’s hard to remember people don’t live in Michigan where if you don’t do this every year, the maple gods come from Canada to take all your sugar
I live in Canada just an hour from the border with Michigan, we like going to the sugar bush every spring too :) The one we go to serves pancakes, waffles, sausage, etc. Even though I've been so many times I still love it; there's something magical in those woods :P
When I was a kid; we use to collect sticks to keep the fire going and we def used buckets. My grandparents and my great uncle use to do it ever year with the maple trees on their property. So yum!!!
My family still uses the bucket method, and we use a small outdoor fire. We only make just enough for ourselves and some friends. Maple syrup season is my favourite time of year. 🥰🇨🇦
I was at the store today looking at Maple syrup, I'm Canadian so we were surprised by how little variety there was at the store. Anyway, my mom said "it's too expensive, we have a maple tree, let's make our own." 💀
Boiling down the sap. I thought sap and tree water are two different things. Is it just language barrier or what? She used 'sap' and 'maple water' interchangeable.
@@DIYDalia thanks, it's definitely a language thing. In my native language we have a word for 'sap' and a different one for 'tree water'. It's like cherry, we have two different words for sweet and sour ones😄 here. When I was a kid learning English I was very confused.
I still dont know what it is but my son found a tree in the forest in the backyard of my dad that taste exactly like sweet peppermint.. we were cutting branches to make a way to go to the stream and to make me laugh he decided to bite the branches and he said it tasted like peppermint i really didnt believe him but after several times that he swears it was true i tried it and its true!! Absolutly delicious but wtf?? Hahahahaha
Blessings in an abundance of the faith. I salute you. 😘🙏Grace and peace be unto you and to this place. Thank you. God bless you. Will you believe and receive Jesus Christ as your LORD and personal saviour??? I do. 😊
Also this video proves that the vegan food is not quite sustainable either. All that boiling must have a gigantic carbon footprint & I mean the electric/fossil fuel boiler, not the steam/vapor. That's quite alright but that boiler! Well!
During harvest season it is more commonly referred to as maple water because it’s roughly 98% water and 2% sugar/sap. At least in my neck of the woods that’s what we have all called it for generations. ^^
Imagine a maple syrup spa where they have a steam room fed off the maple syrup evaporator 🤔 I bet it would smell amazing
I would attend 🧖🏾♀️
The smell in and around the evaporation room is extraordinary!
Wouldnt everything get sticky from the sugar?
@@charlotte6154 the sugar stays behind, it doesn't evaporate off with the water
Energy reuse
So cool! I love maple syrup! But never knew this was the full process. Thanks for sharing :)
In Northern Europe we drink the Birch, maple and few other trees water in spring. It's very delicious.
As a Slavic person I know about Birch spring water and can confirm that it pretty delicious, but what other trees water can be collected to drink?
We did a field trip about this in grade one so I already know but this video unlocked many memories, thank you!
ooh!! i never knew this! love your videos 💗 i feel like i can relate to them alot :)
Awe that’s so sweet I’m glad you enjoy 💞

Sugar content depends on the time of the season. Sometimes the Sap can l can be up to 5%.

@@katej23 it’s okay. I’m 52 and didn’t know. Lol
I like it when a video ends properly !
That maple syrup oven is NICE!
We have lot trees of maple in Gilgit Baltistan but they are being cut for fire as nobody knows it's benefits ,after seeing all this I feel so regret
God gives us everything we need to survive. It's our journey to find and use everything we need to live. Love your video 💜
Yum I love maple 🍁 😋
Just see the curious George episode but Ur version lol
“Maple water” 💀
That’s why I love being Canadian 🍁 🇨🇦
Also you can't get enough sap unless its freezing over night and above freezing the following morning

This much effort for just this little maple syrup ❣️

I did this when I was younger and it was so much fun
I grew up a quarter mile from my best friend who's family has there own maple syrup farm the spring was just a super fun crazy time
I love this my dad used to do this as a kid in Maine we would sit around the fire while it burnt down
The memories of flapjack came rushing back to me 😅
Natural maple snow cones so smart I want to try one😂
Really cool!
We went to Bob evens farm in school it was cool showed how they make syrup candles etc from back in the day and now how milk comes about too lol
My family still uses the bucket method, and we use a small outdoor fire. We only make just enough for ourselves and some friends. Maple syrup season is my favourite time of year. 🥰🇨🇦
I love this... Very Earthy... very you
thanks so much Esther! 💕💕
Awesome!!
I want to try it on some snow. I don’t know but that looked so good
Deadly!!!!

How amazing ❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I received maple syrup as a gift from a canadian friend and i like it 🇩🇿🇨🇦❤

I'm actually growing a sugar maple sapling right now😀
Interesting. 👍
Poured over snow? 🥺 I'm satisfied! 🤩☃️🍁

they're interchangeable (according to google 🙃)

People did not learn it from the Buster series? (Yes the one from Arthur)
not me imagining the trees as humans and the maple water as blood 👀
I WATCHED AN EPISODE OF THIS ON THE MARVELOUS MISADVENTURES OF FLAPJACK😁😂😂
i saw it in caillou lol
If you wanted to could you drink the maple water as just water?
I’m not an expert but I think you just have to boil the water first to kill germs - then you can drink it as water! :)
@@DIYDalia yes, but also no... not necessary to boil.
I drink that for a whole month every year right from the tree
Ahhh maple season in pa-Is the sky pissing on me or it the teees?
WHAT A LEARNING EXPERIENCE
I NEVER KNEW MAPLE SYRUP CAME FROM A MAPLE TREE
WOW.....THIS IS AMAZING
THE LORDS CREATION IS AMAZING.....🙏😊
Lmao that setup looks just like a tincan toilet! 😂😂😂😂😂
Can u do better?;jw
Did anyone else already know this because of that one Curious George episode?
Wait its this Emy’s family i believe their daughter has a UA-cam channel she showed all of this is this in Canada ? Her youtube its The Cat Van Lady
TIL that maple syrup does not flow right out of the tree😭
It’s called sap not water.
There's other definitions of it, they call it maple water over there on the north
Native people are quite literally the blueprint for everything. This is amazing!
🌺

Have you not seen curious George
You're Canadian aren't you?
Riverdale trauma hitting watching this video be like👁👄👁💀💀
👀👀👀 all of that steam could definitely be utilized for energy... But howww🤔🤔🤔
Woww
I wonder what is the difference between grade A and grade B. Is it just the color?
The taste too
Grade A has a stronger taste
It is sap, not water 😒
You learn something new everyday
And for me it was how syrup is made😁
Maple syrup. Other syrup is not made this way.
Blessings in an abundance of the faith. I salute you. 😘🙏Grace and peace be unto you and to this place. Thank you. God bless you. Will you believe and receive Jesus Christ as your LORD and personal saviour??? I do. 😊
ma’am that’s now how you say syrup or sap. get your knowledge up
I speak how I speak :)
its sap not water

@Baby.seal.clubber your avatar is cringe
Maple WATER? It’s not maple water, it’s maple SAP. Lol.
Maple water and maple sap are used interchangeably… I researched the topic a tad before filming this
That's disgusting, the machines ruin the aesthetic. Buckets are better
By “water” she means sap.
During harvest season it is more commonly referred to as maple water because it’s roughly 98% water and 2% sugar/sap. At least in my neck of the woods that’s what we have all called it for generations. ^^
That’s not water
I have helped my dad make maple syrup for many years and we just call it the liquid that comes from the tree that you called Maple Water. sap
