    really is a shame Constatine XI wasn't born 200 years earlier. Although the byzantine empire fell under him by the time he became emperor the empire had already been doomed for the past 50 years due to the expansion of the ottoman empire. During his Rule over athens he won the very last byzantine victory/territorial expansion taking much of southern greece, unfortunately the ottoman civil war ended then causing constantinople to fall.
    Had he been born in the 1250s and came to power when the byzantine empire reunified the ottomans would have never existed and much of greece/costal anatollia would have been reincorporated into the byzantine realm

    The problem about reclaiming majority of Thrace and Greece and repopulating Constantinople, is it removes the shift to Western Anatolia where most soldiers came from. When the Turks began to ravage Western Anatolia and eventually recovers it, the manpower pool of the Empire began to drastically be reduced. Without the manpower pool, even competent Emperors like Andronikos III cant make long term gains.

    • @Hallen01
      @Hallen01  5 років тому +3

      It was a combination of political prestige and legitimate claims to the throne of Constantinople based on actual political power and dynastic connections. Both Nikaea and Thessalonica had the political and military means to assert the claim to Constantinople and both states backed up those claims with attempts to take the throne. A state like Bulgaria wouldn't ever take imperial titles because they did not have the prestigious connections to Constantinople like the other states did. A state like Epirus wouldn't have claimed it because they didn't have the political/military influence.

    • @Hallen01
      @Hallen01  5 років тому

      Actually the reason I showed that is because I assumed that for the few years between when the Golden Horde was established and when the Ilkhanate was established, Anatolia must have gone over to the nominal control of the Golden Horde, but now looking back on it a year later I'm sure if its accurate. First, because the Mongols might have had control over Anatolia through their other middle eastern territories, and second because the Golden Horde may have formed after 1256 (I don't know where I got 1053 from, it might have just been an estimate or I might have actually had as source). I'd have to look back over my notes to figure out why exactly I did it, but I definitely remember having a reason.

      @@Hallen01 That is indeed right , Batu and the tatars ravaged the Bulgarian country side multiple times. Especially in north-eastern Bulgaria. However paying tribute is far from vassalage.
      Bulgaria was not dependent in any pollitical way by the Mongols and vassalage implies that. Bulgaria became a vassal in 1285 when the Tatars led a big campaign against Bulgaria and reached the capital Tarnovo. In order to negotiate with them for peace the current Bulgarian emperor Georgy Terter I became a tatar vassal. However this vassalage lasted only for about 13 years.

      @Hallen01  5 років тому

      @@historyrhymes1701 It depends on what your definition of vassalage is. I'll list a state as a vassal if any kind of yearly tribute is being sent, as it generally implies that the vassal is dependent on the tribute to protect it from the more powerful state. If the more powerful state exerts a consistent enough pressure over a period to extract an annual tribute, I feel that its not unreasonable to imply a position of subservience on the part of the vassal.

      Well I will give you an example.
      Byzantium paid tributes annually to the Bulgarians or the Magyars multiple times like the ones from 681 to the 700s . That doesn't mean that Bizantium was dependant in any way by the Bulgarians , they just wanted to prevent more raids and future wars with them and wanted a peace. I beleave that the case was the same in 1242 when Kaliman Asen ( or his regency) wanted to negotiate peace with Batu and agreed to pay an annual tribute.
