He almost doubled the Empires size the absolute madman
if the romans continued to have emporers half as good as basil II they may have survived in some form until today
He reformed the empire especially the church. He taxed the church as it was so corrupt and that helped to sustain the armies and the empire. But sadly after his dead everything returned back to the way it were and so the decline begone
Manuel I Comnenus
If John II Comnenus had lived another 20 years he would have saved the empire.
@@williampaz2092John is underappreciated and a realist and would have been like Vasileios II and slowly annexed Rum and etc. until he reclaimed all of Anatolia and ended the issue of the fall of the natural Anatolian border. Then his less competent son, Manuel, would be in a good enough position to further improve the empire
Actually what is the Catholic and Orthodx church? Is not the Pope the spiritual chief (Augustus) of millions of catholics? What about LATIN america?
In 1000 AD Western Europe was whining about the end of world believed in that year due to the instability in all Europe. In the meanwhile, at Eastern frontier there was Basil II saying:” F*ck these barbarians, let’s take it all back and they will see the real Basileus of all,the presence of God on Earth.” End of the world? That was an amazing time to be in Constantinople receiving glorious news where people they were at the highest level of being proud considering themselves the true Romans :’)
The Byzantines were stronger than all of western Europe combined at that point, Constantinople had a bigger population than all of England
Have to respect Basil's grind.
he grinded on the barbarians eyes hehe

400*
@@richardilionheart488 No, 50. They mean that, had Basil lived and reigned 50 years later, he'd be there for the Battle of Manzikert.
I'm trying to decide who may be the best Roman Emperor but I can't decide between these 5
Augustus, Trajan, Constantine, Justinian, and Basil II
you forget Marcus Aurelius, Claudius Gothicus ,Aurelian, Diocletian, Julian the Apostate, Valentinian, Majorian, Marcian, Zeno, Leo the Tracian, Tiberius II Constantine, Mauricius, Heraclius, Constantine IV, Leo III, Basil the Macedonian, Nikephoros II Phocas ("The Pale Death of the Saracens") John Tzimiskes, Alexius Comnenus, John Comnenus, Manuel Comnenus and Constantine XI Palaiologos.
@@belisariusthemagnificent504 Justinian was certainly not the best Eastern Emperor. His campaigns completely destroyed Italy's cities and countryside, and he turned Rome into a wasteland while recapturing it. Aqueducts were cut, roads were destroyed, farmland was burned, and the livelihoods of the people were swept away. And the ironic thing is that after his conquests, Italy was left less Roman than before; the grain dole was gone, games were no longer held in the colosseum, and the aqueducts were never rebuilt. Justinian's campaigns in the west also drew troops away from the Empire's eastern frontier, which led to a Persian invasion that depopulated and plundered the rich provinces of Syria and Judea. There are many candidates for the best Eastern Emperor, including Anastasius I Dicorus, Basil II, and Alexios I Komnenos, but Justinian was definitely not one of them.
@Smokez you are mistaking. His campaigns were costly, yes but he also increased annual revenue by 1,000,000 solidi. The Empire was in a relatively good shape again by the time Maurice came to power (mostly). Not to mention Justinian was very competent. He kept the empire running after the plague, he built great works, redid Roman law, and reformed the tax system. If so many unlucky things didn’t happen his reign would’ve been much better. Now to call him the best Roman Emperor, no that title goes to Augustus without question but he is most certainly up there with Trajan, Basil II and others.
@@garabic8688 He increased annual revenue on paper because he gained more land and thus more people to tax. The massive damage to Italy, the tribute paid to the Sassanids for his "Eternal Peace" with Khosrau I, and the tremendous losses of wealth in the East are not factored in. Nor is his zeal for Chalcedonian Christianity that destroyed the lives of thousands of Jews and Samaritans. Of course, he did many good things for the Empire, but there are better contenders for the list of Top 5. Anastasius I Dicorus kept the Empire stable, peaceful, and prosperous - and left it with a massive budget surplus after his death. Alexios I Komnenos inherited a broken and defunct Empire whose eastern frontier had entirely fallen apart - and managed to patch it up, reconquering large parts of Asia Minor and re-establishing Eastern Roman power.
@Smokez I like that you notice Anastasius he was an incredible Emperor. I think Justinian would be in the top 5, but if not then top 10. I’d probably rank it as
Justinian
Basil II
Alexios
Heraclius

Crusaders of the Light - Globus

all that hard work and as soon as he died, it all went to shit. why? because he left no heir...or at least no COMPETENT one...
Empire remained quite strong until very end of the 11th century but mainly it is a huge cliché and simplification to blame how things eventually turned on Basil not having a child. If he had it would not authomatically meant that child would be a good ruler.Peoples also tend to ignore that his younger brother Constantine was Emperor with him for all of his reign.Do you really expected he should ignore rights of a man,his brother, who moreover already was an Emperor? We know some of Basils officials and generals wanted just that but Basil strictly opposed to any suggestion he should have ignore rank bestowed to Constantine by God himself(...it is also needed to see it also from religious side).Constantine eventually ruled for too short time to anyhow really seriously dammaging the Empire and failures of other Emperors were their own-they could not be attributed to Basil as if he was responsible for it.This reminds me similar cliché with blaming Marcus Aurelius for Commodus which most people do usually not even being aware of certain facts connected with this which would potentially altered their view significantly.
That's why monarchy is shit. Empire might get one competent leader who actually brings the empire to greatness but then all of it goes to shit as soon as they die because there's simply no one good enough to succeed them at the spot.
@@paprskomet his brother only ruled for 3 years after his death and was very incompetent, focused more on hunting and parties than ruling the country, which is laughable if you think he was 65 years old when he came to power (I'm talking about Constantine VIII)
@@stevenkoja5 well,I know-but that only further underlines absurdity of blaming decline of the Empire on Constastantine. Moreover even bad Emperor who is not interrested in really rulling the Empire is not necessarilly an obstacle to continuous growth of the state in case he entrust these things in hands of capable ministers.
He should have a son

If only the lifespan of people back then could be higher and Basil lived till 90 years old, he would have reconquered the Holy Land, Egypt and Italy. Also the Schism of the Latins when they killed the last rightful Pope and put a German puppet on the Throne of Saint Peter would never have taken place.

A long-term failure, his centralization of the state resulted in no path to power from a Theme. As such, landowners had no incentive to protect their lands, a major factor aiding the Turkish conquest of Anatolia. He was no doubt a good emperor, but the way he left the empire needed his successors to be as good as him, simple not possible. Constans II is better anyways.

IF only they had a "5 good emperors" period with Basil II being the first..... 200 years of expansion and dominance, most of Italy probably would have been back under true Roman control and the travesty of the 4th crusade would have never happened....The ottoman empire probably would never come to be......and Constantinople would still be Roman. or Romoi.... The country of Greece would probably be called Romania or the Republic of Romoii today. Which would probably be a country with settled border from the Italian alps to Anatolia give or take.
They sort of had that.
The first was Nikephoros Phocas the white death of the Saracens and reconquerer of Crete and Antioch, then John Tzimiskes the Vanquisher of the Rus hordes, subjugator of Syria and Bulgaria, then Basil the Bulgar slayer.
It could be considered the Pax Byzantiae, in the same vein as the Pax Romana, honestly
And just like the 5 good emperors, the 3 good emperors of Byzantium ended with a great emperor who left the empire to his terrible blood relative, (commodus and Constantine VII)

Basil the bulgar slayer the LAST TRUE ROMAN!.
Yes although he was Greek from Macedonia
What about Alexios, John and Manuel?
@@cht4263 He was from Constantinople. He was purple born.
His ancestor, Basil I, was from the *_Theme_* of Macedonia, which was ancient Thrace, or eastern Thrace.
@@histguy101 Which was also greek.
@@user-rw8vz7qe9c We have no idea what ethnicity he was. Some believed he was Armenian.(he being Basil I, from whom the Dynasty is named)
Ethnic origins aren't really a factor in this period, and people come from all over. I was just pointing out why he(Basil I) was called "The Macedonian" and it was because he was from the Army/Theme of Macedonia, which was Thrace.
Basil II on the other hand, was a Roman, born in the purple, in New Rome.
The Theme of Thrace was divided in half around the year 800. The southern half was named the Theme of Macedonia, but it does not correspond to the ancient kingdom of Alexander I, Phillip II, and Alexander the Great, etc.
I His Time Byzantine Empire is The Strongest Natio n in Europe and with Chinese and Inka Empire the 3 more Strong States in the PLANET !
The incas didn't even have iron weapons or horses.... their military technology was weaker than that of 1500 B.C of the old world. Militaristically they were the weakest empire to ever exist (or maybe the aztecs).
@@idoradm1233 Incas had bronze weapons, top tier padded armour, sophisticated military tactics and a well organized army. They conquered their known world and built so many roads, that they could honestly be comparable to the Roman Empire. Spain defeated the native empires mainly due to smallpox and Aztec Empire being hated by everyone in Mezoamerica. Incas are legitimately the mightiest and most advanced pre-Columbian empire.

Not in the Map. He lost against Kurdish Dynasty Empire of Marwanids
What's the name of the battle
Sources ?
Even if he did, it was a minor defeat that didn't really matter. He had plenty of those anyway.
Augusto killed Republic. Republic was the secret of Rome strongness and in the end Empire had less resilience than Republic. Giustiniano had no consideration for his people. His conquers had a high price and were not stable. He left an empire with less resources. Traiano was the optimus princeps. The example. The best for Romans. But Empire situation was not so bad at that time. Basilio was an able ruler, instancable. He always tried to consolidate economics, statal structures, terrotorial acquisition also if he wasn't able with war as Giovanni Zimisce or Niceforo II. He learned how to treat aristocracy very well. He consolidated theme system. He had method. He left a strong empire. Maybe that if Teodora had the possibility to rule without Zoe and her husband for more time something would have changed. Comparing different period has no sense. We can exitimate or evaluate all emperors without classificaton. For sure Basilio was loved by his people, not the same for Giustiniano.
Both the empire and the republic suffered from the same systemic weakness, the efforts of the priviliged class to maintain said privilige. The Senate may have been neutered under the empire and could find itself under fire from emperors like Commodus, but even an emperor is only one man, and one man can be killed, if they back their enemies into a corner. And it happened over and over. Through it all the "mighty" in the empire, both in Rome and later in Constantinople, managed to preserve their perqs even when they ran against the greater good of the state, and even when the state was falling apart. There is no ideal nation. Too many want wealth, too many want power, and are willing to do anything to secure them.
@@michaelfisher7170 there isn't a perfect way to manage a state as you say. However the identity and the resilience of Roman Empire wasn't good as Roman Republic. Romanity sense made them stronger. With Gracco's brother another evolution could have been possible. I hope you can forgive language mistakes from my side. .
