We have this advent wreath in the Church and in our homes too and the same symbolism of the 4 candles and the white at the center which is Christ's but am pleased to know that the candles are also called Prophet's and Shepherd"s candles for tge first 2 purple oones. Thank you for this new ( for us) info.
Thank you so much for your kindness and encouragement! It really is a shame when we do things without understanding why, it's good to know what things mean. Thanks for watching
Thank you, Elizabeth! I'm fairly certain that the symbolism is the same for you and me (I'm from the Evangelical tradition) with these Advent candles, but you may double check. And if you discover any small differences, I'd be interested to learn them!
Very similar in the Catholic Church. The three purple candles are for prayer, penance, and preparation. The third Sunday with the rose candle is called Gaudete Sunday...it means rejoice...same as joy. Special prayers are said at each lighting. Very similar and a beautiful time in the Church.
At our church we have a traditional holly and conifer wreath I find not only the candles represent things but the greenery and the holly in the wreath as well.
Thank you so much for a thorough explanation. Most videos give very short, quick so I didn't get all info. Others use any candles, etc. but I wanted the story, tradition, again thank you very informative and what I needed. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas! 2021
Whe do the candles but it also make us remember tge second comming of Jesus of course I hope to be in heaven by then so I don't have to see the end times carnage great vedeo kudos
Salamat po Fr. The Philippines its worth knowing it over and over again. I really want to have this in our home Advance Merry Christmas☃️❄️ Maligayang Pasko po, 🌲
The info should be pretty easy to come by using online search, the ideas expressed here aren't original to me. I did some digging and basic research to make sure I had my facts right, but it's all public knowledge I think. Best of luck!
Do you put the first candle out after Sunday and light it again next Sunday together with the second one? Or do you let it go on burning during the week and light only the second candle next Sunday?
Great question. Both candles should be lit the second Sunday, so unless you have spare candles or a VERY slow burning set of candles, it's best put them out after use for Service or personal worship. That said, I know people who have personal wreaths at home that burn the first candle from the first Sunday till the final one, but they replace the first, second, third and fourth candles when they get low. But yeah, the candles should all be lit together according to the "number" of Sundays that have passed in Advent.
Nice! So, same thing here then, no? Five candles, the four outside plus the Christ candle, and 40 says of Advent. Mirrors Lent in a lot of ways, love it!
Just found a source that said: Each candle represents 1,000 years. Together, the four candles symbolize the 4,000 years that humanity waited for the world’s Light of our Savior, from Adam and Eve to Jesus, whose birth was foretold in the Old Testament.
Well, generally we regard RED as being love, as being the color or blood and the ultimate love shown by Jesus and His sacrifice. Rose is on that Red spectrum, so there may be some overlap in some church traditions?
Rose or pink is the color of the vestments worn by Catholic priests on the 3rd Sunday of advent called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means "rejoice" in Latin. Rejoice = to show great joy, thus the candle color's most common connection to joy as opposed to love for the advent wreath.
Great, I'm all about improvement. So if you have some suggestions on what you'd like to be different, I'd be willing to listen. If not, appreciate you watching

I'm using spiral candles this year (4 green and a gold this year.)
Do you like football or any sports?
That sounds like a tasteful change to the standard colors, nice!
You are so kind!!! Most churches put up the Advent candle and so many have no idea what it means. Thanks !!!
Thank you so much for your kindness and encouragement! It really is a shame when we do things without understanding why, it's good to know what things mean. Thanks for watching

We called the Joy Sunday, 3rd Avent Sunday, Gaudette, which means "joy."
Went back to the Latin!? Love it!
Cool that you were watching this in August too. - Getting a jumpstart on the season, props to you!

ThankYou!Godbless!
We light the candle, sing a Carol, read a Prophecy that predicts Christ's coming, watch a video on one of the 4 Gospels and sing one last Carol.
Great tradition, love it!
Do you put the first candle out after Sunday and light it again next Sunday together with the second one? Or do you let it go on burning during the week and light only the second candle next Sunday?

Orthodox Christians have 5 candles/Sundays plus Christmas. 40 day advent
Nice! So, same thing here then, no? Five candles, the four outside plus the Christ candle, and 40 says of Advent. Mirrors Lent in a lot of ways, love it!
The four candles also represent the 400 years of silence from God between the last prophet and John the Baptist. Great video. Thanks.
Love it! Thanks for the addition, and glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks.
I think 4000 represents that of adam to Christ. Correct me if im wrong.
I think you're right. 40 and it's multiples show up a lot in the scriptures and are woven into many of the Christian practices. Good catch 👍
I have heard others say, 4000 years of waiting on Christ.
Just found a source that said:
Each candle represents 1,000 years. Together, the four candles symbolize the 4,000 years that humanity waited for the world’s Light of our Savior, from Adam and Eve to Jesus, whose birth was foretold in the Old Testament.
I'm totally gonna pass exam
I hope so! Glad you're feeling confident.
Rose is "Joy", I always thought Rose was "love"?
Well, generally we regard RED as being love, as being the color or blood and the ultimate love shown by Jesus and His sacrifice. Rose is on that Red spectrum, so there may be some overlap in some church traditions?

^ Appreciate the thorough explanation from the Catholic perspective 🔥
The absolute WORST lighting in the opening. So sorry everyone... 😐
En Hymn that’s all right, there’s grace here!
Light at the end...Christ (the message) brings the light. Thank you.
I do not like this
Great, I'm all about improvement. So if you have some suggestions on what you'd like to be different, I'd be willing to listen. If not, appreciate you watching
Why?
I'd be curious to know why also. Perhaps it's time to redo this video and have an updated version
