I'm an English rider and I always wondered what those were! Thanks for the explanation, I wish there was an English equivalent. My mare is a lot like Rooster, and I would like to try it on her.
I've never even seen slobber straps. I can see what a great tool they are in the right circumstances.
Excellent explanation.
Why are they called slobber straps (if known)? Just curious. Thanks for your videos, they’re always interesting.
Traditionally, the mecate would be of braided mane hair. Braided mane hair doesn't do well tied directly to the bit, wears it quickly. Saliva and water will hasten the wear. Slobber straps protect the mecate and extend the life.
Great info. Thanks. Just had to ask what is up with his tail?
You mentioned using slobber straps to help if a horse is "drafty." In your experience, do draft type breeds generally seem stiffer and therefore more difficult to steer?
I saw somewhere on a YT that bit hobbles are supposed to coordinate with the saddle pad, rider's socks and thong if visible to the judges. I didn't realize the level of scrutiny you all have to meet.
