I’ve been preparing research for this exact topic and boy the portrayal of the rep is frustrating to look at but it’s also a trend I notice a lot where works that’ll have majority black casts will have the very little lgbt rep entirely as non black people. Then when queer rep is presented by non black creators they almost always fix the black person to a white partner and the white partner is almost always unlearning bigotry as their storyline.
It really reinforces this false idea that queerness and Blackness are mutually exclusive and non compatible.
Thank you for this! I have some thoughts on a lot of rep in works reinforcing harmful narratives with the spare portrayals we’ve seen.

    Fr, queer =/= sexual
I don’t understand why queerness is so often sexualized 🙄

The problem isnt that there are no black queer characters but the people who truly desire such characters never make a stand and create such characters

This is a problem with live actions black queer characters too. They either always in love triangles with a white character, always dating interracially, and usually don’t have an happy ending/get written off of the show. For animation is about the same? I would argue SLIGHTLY better but that’s not saying much. Characters like Aqualad is amazing in terms of like earlier season 1 and 2 of him, but in 3 he was basically written off of the show and his queerness was literally a blink and you miss it scene, (legit a slide show of him kissing a dude I didn’t even know he was queer until I finished the show cuz I didn’t see the stilted kiss 😶). It would’ve been nice to see him as the leader he was in season 1 now being openly queer and leading the team but no… Ik they made him queer because he is in the comics but it honestly felt like they didn’t want to do it? Like they really went “well he is queer in the comics so might as well”. He was also pretty masculine too, as someone who is kinda masc queer would’ve been nice to see that rep too. Moving forward I HOPE for live action and animation they give us queer black on black couples, I don’t get why every queer black person has to date interracially we should have black love too as queer people. Nevertheless, excellent video!

Hey! Really like the video. I kind of want to make a response video as I am intrigued by this topic as well but feel you misrepresented some points. (Not an angry response obviously, just a critique.)

sure. I'm not really a political youtuber so i'm not the best at conveying my thoughts and this was mostly just a rant on some observations, but go ahead. ☺

I hope that one day, the creators of series and shows can finally understand the importance of representation 🙏🏻🤎🖤🤎
