The opening and credits that survive from Xmas TOTP '69. The credits are from rehearsals. Looked like a good show, several performances do survive from this show also
Given that a lot of popular music around the world since 1964 has come from Britain, I'm surprised that "Top Of The Pops" wasn't internationally syndicated in the 1960's an 1970's, especially after BBC-1 went col(u)r in late 1969. It could have been a major global smash.
I know that we at least got it in NZ. Usually during the 'holiday' breaks or when our local Top 40 type music video shows like 'Ready To Roll' or 'Coca-Cola Countdown' were off the air. And this was before they started briefly making the awful 'localized' TOTP's near the end of the run, circa about 2004 to 06..
@IanLucey1972- BBC1 launched colour transmissions in the Autumn of 1969, so that year's Christmas special was broadast in colour for the first time. Some items from earlier in the year were taped in black and white so the show was a mixture of b/w and colour. I do remember Pan's People dancing to "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" being one of those monochrome gems :)
@@aka81 Bugger! It's just IIRC a clip from a colour 69 edition of Marmalade doing 'Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da' DID appear in the December 73 Ten Years of Special, and that was after the huge wiping spree of the shows, the special relied on the tapes and films from the Bob Pratt tapes.
When you think what was going on musically at the time it makes the opening of this show look even more ridiculous than it was, those daft dancers, christ The Beatles were on the Abbey Road LP by then, no wonder they cleared up, entertainment was already 10 years behind
It may look lame in retrospect but at Xmas 69 i reckon most uk folks in suburban tv land still thought Abbey road was weird and too far out like a lot of music from 69 compared to a few years earlier ... TOTPs had to appeal to a wide audience of millions not just the hippest of hipsters at that moment
By 1969 the Rolling Stones and The Who were really starting to blossom and other acts like the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie were emerging. The Beatles were not prepared to be a great band amongst other great bands having been on top for so long, so they broke it off to preserve a myth and remain the best in people's minds.
I think they were just replacements for Pan's People as they were not available for this Xmas Day edition of TOTP (they were filming another Xmas special called 'The Price of Fame' instead). Which is a pity as it would have been cool to see them performing on this show :(
I remember watching Sugar Sugar in 69 and that was in colour, Jimmy Saville also introduced that episode

Flares! There were still people wearing those in the late 1970s! And early 1980s round my way! The 60s certainly started some powerful fashion trends!
I was only 18 months old when this wàs broadcast
Great clip. Two great presenters but I didn't remember Pete having grey hair so soon.
I swear to god jimmy saville was born looking like that...
Look at Saville the Peado FREAK! 😂
Do you have any more of this edition?
No sorry this show was wiped by the BBC this is all that remains

You know it's a rehearsal because the end captions are all in the wrong order!!
ILL THINK ALAN FLUFF FREEMAN AND TONY BLACKBURN WAS ON THE BOXING DAY 1969 TOP OF THE POPS. PETE MURRAY AND JIMMY SAVILE WAS ON THE XMAS DAY ONE
Why did it only show the beginning and the end .
As this is all that remains. These are rehearsals. The actual show was wiped
Wasn't this one of the first "Top Of The Pops" episodes produced in colo(u)r?
Was this the first "Top Of The Pops" episode to have been broadcast in colo(u)r? I believe BBC-1 went colo(u)r in late 1969.
27-11-69 was the first colour TOTP.
YES IT WAS 27TH NOV 1969 WHEN TOP OF THE POPS WAS SHOWN IN COLOUR. ROLF HARRIS WAS NO 1 WITH TWO LITTLE BOYS. OF COURSE JIMMY SAVILE

Only one daft dancer the bloke.

No.
The male dancer is wanker
NO
Paul Manly Well you can probably recognise someone like yourself then.
Anyone got an idea who the dancers are -they don't look like Pan's People.
