@@mr.robinson1982 had a similar experience at Ft Sill in 82. Long story, but I pissed off a DI from a different platoon. My arms and shoulders are still sore from the amount of push-ups I did in his office.
Sargent Toomey's vocabulary was excellent in this movie. The words "Veracity", "Reticence" and "Aforementioned" had me intrigued on '88 when I saw the movie and I began to use those words back then as a teen. Thanks, Sarge.
When the Sarge enters,"Hi..how are ya?" Very disarming. Then slowly turns the screw . Later in the film, the Sarge explains himself candidly. Great acting.
I recall very candidly June 77 at Ft. Jackson, SC. We were being introduced to our training platoons. The Senior Drill came off as Boy a Scout leader, saying we were going to experience things we thought our bodies couldn’t do. Then he turned us over to our Drills and that’s when hell looked me straight in the eyes.
@@johnpender358 Just off the top of my head, The Deer Hunter, Biloxi Blues, McBain, Valley Forge, and The Dogs of War. I don't think of him as a war movie actor, though, just an everything actor because he hardly ever turns down a role.
This reminds me of my first day of basic at Ft. Sill OK. I would think of this movie and start laughing in formations and always get in trouble. I had a blast.
Matthew Broderick is a pretty underrated actor in my opinion. He’s been in some iconic movies with some pretty legendary co-stars (Marlon Brando, Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman, Jim Carrey and the scene stealer here, Christopher Walken).
I was a radioman, took extra training on my own and was good in it. So the officer started to punish me every time any of my crewmembers made mistakes. I realized what he wanted and pretended like nothing was happening. Say, one of my operators failed to receive a radio, the officer called me: "Paramonov, last night YOU didn't get a radio." - "Sorry, comrade major, my failure, next time I'll try better." And would say no word to that mate. The officer was mad. It was fun.
Biloxi Blues is one of those rare movies that had a moving effect on me back in the 1980s. When Myrna was telling Mathew Broderick character to "breath", Breath Honey". That moment is so relatable for every young guy. Funny and truth telling at it's best. Classic movie!
'Escape From New York'...love it! I had a board game from that movie when i was young because my parents knew i was all into it. Oh and yes Biloxi was hilarious then and still is.

Brilliant scene! Christopher Walken nails it. Army psychology at its finest. I know........ I experienced a bit myself at Fort Polk, Louisiana in 1968.
Even when he was drunk and enraged, he kept his voice calm and totally in control. THAT is the sign of a scary person. And my favorite line "I can kill both of you (he was pointing his .45 at them and was drunk), but they can only hang me once."
Ive seen this movie on tv countless times, but i also once saw Biloxi Blues, live as a theatrical production in a local neighborhood theater. During the basic training scene, an older gent in my seating row started chuckling and leaning over to his female companion, said to her, "that's what it was really like!"
Not really. Army DSs were much more vulgar and loud in 1986. This scene lacked the DS that would have had these troops fearful enough to not mention having to go to the bathroom. Walken was more of a senior DS attitude here.
Depends which branch. In Marine Boot Camp, DI’s never casually spoke to boots like that and boots never casually spoke to DI’s. It was always loud at the top of your lungs and at the position of attention.
