Just so y’all know 😂 the door bell is supposed to have one tone for the back door and another tone for the front door which will tells the homeowner which door someone is at. That’s why there are 3 terminals on the actuators and two plungers.
The super high voltage would be a "fun" surprise to payback the ding-dong-ditch kid. "Woah! The doorbell exploded! I'm done with this" Hearing the doorbell being rung while getting smashed is hilarious!

1:41 the fact it’s a smaller transformer means it has a lower Q factor, that circuit could be rated for 12v for example yet the system on full load could be pulled below 12v which is not acceptable during electrical engineering. Rating the no load voltage for 16v is common practice with little transformers and is why some beginner hobby electronics enthusiasts sometimes blow up their creations.

These generic ones are most likely made in communist land (China); the ones made up through the mid 80s were always made here in the USA. I used to watch you guys back in junior high , I'm currently a senior in high school I laughed so hard when you guys put the cheap ass door chime on 115 volts AC (you turned into a vibrating chime (continuous) as opposed to single/double stroke (ding-dong). A lot of hospitals and libraries had single note versions as fire alarm signaling devices. I have seen them used as class change signals for schools. they were often single stroke, which was meant for use on coded fire alarm systems, or ones that had a master signal code generator in the control panel. there were also vibrating ones for use on smaller systems that had no signal code (systems for really small buildings).
I heard a interesting story involving a doorbell. A woman called the police in the middle of the night as her doorbell wouldn’t stop ringing, the police found a gigantic ant nest in her wall which had pushed the contacts together and set the bell off continuously.
Why use a step-up transformer if you can have 240 volts from two separate outlets or a dryer outlet or even directly from your service panel ? (I watched Technology Connection's video called The US electrical system is not 120V).

I think your doorbell is configured for single stroke operation. I have the same thing too. (It's typically used for side or rear doors.)
My doorbell had the exact same fate, where it got stuck and caught fire 😂
