  • Join me on an adventure, 'Out in the Field' just outside of Bishop California, where we can experience Fall colors, and a stunning glaciated topography!
Lake Sabrina is a lake created by damming the middle fork of Bishop Creek. It is located south-west of Bishop, California on California State Route 168, in the Inyo National Forest. It has a cafe as well as a dock. The dam was built in 1907-8 to supply a constant flow of water to the hydraulic power plants. The lake is part of the Bishop Creek system.
As the glaciers expand, due to their accumulating weight of snow and ice they crush and abrade and scour surfaces such as rocks and bedrock. The resulting erosional landforms include striations, cirques, glacial horns, arêtes, trim lines, U-shaped valleys, roches moutonnées, over deepening and hanging valleys.
Later, when the glaciers retreated leaving behind their freight of crushed rock and sand (glacial drift), they created characteristic depositional landforms. Examples include glacial moraines, eskers, and kames. Drumlins and ribbed moraines are also landforms left behind by retreating glaciers. The stone walls of New England contain many glacial erratics, rocks that were dragged by a glacier many miles from their bedrock origin.
Lakes and ponds may also be caused by glacial movement. Kettle lakes form when a retreating glacier leaves behind an underground or surface chunk of ice that later melts to form a depression containing water. Moraine-dammed lakes occur when glacial debris dam a stream (or snow runoff).
Geographic Features Observed: Cirques, Aretes, Moraines, Tarns, Horns

The things we take for granted! Lake Sabrina looks amazing. This is truly California's Gold, something Huell would've loved.

It really is! I'm going to try to head up in three weeks to see what if It's still Gold! When I did this video, there were some rough fires in the area, so it was a little hazy.

It wasn't that bad- but the smoke was very bad! But the fall colors were stunning!

This would be my favorite place to go and explore different rocks and how different glaciers has changed its colors.

Lake Sabrina is unbelievable any time of year! Fall colors are best viewed the fest weekend in October, but the other three seasons create a unique and beautiful environment as well!

So much to see- and to discover! I am working on some, looking at the Bishop Tuff, Hot Creek (which is a little north) and even the secret Bishop Garnet Mine!

Are you able to camp by the lake like with a tent or are there designated areas near by?

Yes you can! They have a fishing dock for renting boats, and miles and miles of hiking trails in the Backcountry for camping!

I find your logo hauntingly familiar. BTW I grew up the son of a forest ranger.

As an amateur geologist (“geo-enthusiast?” “geo-groupie?”) I realize focusing on California’s geology is a difficult way to start due to the extraordinarily complex processes that have created this state.

Absolutely… but that is what makes California a case study for so many in the field. We can surf and snowboard in the same day- deserts and forests and highest and lowest elevations. That’s not even including the different geology!

Was this playlist/series made for a specific college course or something like that? What school?
I watched the whole California playlist, I learned a lot. I like your style, thanks Professor.
