This was hands down the best review I have seen on scales. Even American Test Kitchen failed to answer the question of which scales are quicker on measurements. Hope you do more reviews.
American test kitchen is terrible, they always say the most expensive product is best,, not once have I seen them not follow that pattern, also I've found better products on my own
My wife wants a scale for Christmas and I've watched several videos trying to pick the best one for her. This video is by far better than the others I've viewed. Great job, and thank you.
This was a great breakdown/review video! We bought the Taylor and HATED IT. Glad to see we weren’t alone. Looks like it’s OXO for us but the myweigh is tempting even though it’s quite large . Thanks again!
I calorie count and use food scales daily. Every scale I've purchased to this point has failed me. I'm currently in the market for another as the ones I have are hanging on by a thread. This review was extraordinarily helpful and I am very grateful to you both for putting this together. Thank you!
Agree about the Taylor design. It super frustrating to use those but they compact so you can easily weight something outdoor but I would go with mechanical one then.
Excellent review. Well organized, clear, honest, and funny. I really appreciate that you use them for a good length of time before reviewing. My only suggestion would be to measure light, mid, and heavyweight items for which you know the exact mass and compare their accuracy. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
I'm on my second MyWeigh. The first one lasted about six years before the power button broke through. I opened it up, cleaned all the years of food out, and made a makeshift power button with tape and printer paper. It now lives in the garage. The new one replaced it in the kitchen. Yes, it's huge, but it is by FAR the best consumer scale I've ever had. You can turn the speed up so that it responds to changing weight (you showed this but didn't explain), and will weigh something as little as 2 grams. It also holds its calibration very well. Yes, I'm that guy that calibrates his scales. After years of kitchen abuse, it was only off by maybe 2 grams at 5 kg after an initial break-in period where it varied a bit. Its accuracy is nearly the same as my A&D 6000i professional scale. Both repeatability and precision are top-notch.
Ive had the big one on the far right for like 5 years! Its awesome. I wish it was a little more precise than 1g but it makes up for that by being able to weigh high weights
I've been using the myweigh kd8000 and all of its previous versions for 10yrs in a commercial restaurant. they are big and obnoxious to store at home but they will last forever. they will withstand any accidental drop, even after it did cartwheels down the stairs hitting every step
This review was amazing. You helped me make the choice of the Oxo. I am a calorie counter and use my scale every day all day and the current one I have now is a pain in the ass. Looking forward to this nice upgrade.
Great review! When I saw the OXO, I thought it looked very similar to the scales I used when I worked in a lab, so I am going with that choice. Thanks for this review.
Great review, thanks Lisa. I do like it when reviewers give real world reviews like in your case. Yes the MyWeight does it all but day-to-day the OXO is a better scale for most of everyday use. I'm replacing a Salter scale I purchased from Linen and Things in the late 1990's. That scale measured in 4 gram increments, and recently the middle led number died so I figured 20 years of service and better precision today it would be time to replace and not fix my scale. I ordered the OXO through your link so be sure to assure you got credit for the sale as I may have purchased the Taylor if I hadn't watched this video..... what a mistake that would have been. Thanks.
Oh, I totally agree with you the XOXO even though I haven’t bought it yet I’m sold. Thank you so much for doing all the legwork the comparison, the price, the whole shebang you save me a lot of time and money and headaches.
Excellent review that "weigh" in the most important pros and cons. :) Very entertaining to watch as well !! Really like you guys :) I really liked the table with the different data you compared also . Well done !!!
When you went through the minimum requirements of a scale, I knew you were testing the right things! Have you tried the Escali Arti model? I like that it has a larger platform and can handle a bit more weight, but wonder about the accuracy of micro-weights.
What a fantastic review! I'm looking for a new kitchen scale to address exactly some of the issues that you tested, such as speed of weighing. THANK YOU!
Are you saying the Oxo doesn't accurately measure ounces? Why would anyone want it then? Do you have more to say that would clarify the problem you have with the Oxo? Thanks so much
Ive had the Taylor for almost a year, just bought the oxo one. Can’t stand another day using it. I hate the buttons, I hate the error message i get with it. Glad I’m not the only one.
It came time to replace my kitchen scale today, and I remembered this video! I was standing in the store looking up your video and which scales you recommended. Thank you! Also, the OXO is $50 sticker price but with a 20% off coupon at Bed Bath and Beyond, it's quite a deal!
Unless you are going to pay thousands of dollars for a lab scale. Being able to have a high weight limit and also reasonable accuracy below 1 g. Is just not feasible. If you are weighing small amounts like 0 to 2 g do you need a high precision scale.
I now have a closet full of scales after this video. 😉 I decided to do this experiment after my original scale went on the fritz and I purchased the Taylor on a whim. 😕 What do you weigh on your micro scale?
WOW! I only wish all products were reviewed with such detail and care! yeah American Test Kitchen cannot touch this review. Spending a month with the scales really pays off!
Great review. Only other thing I look for in a scale is that it uses a AA or AAA battery! So many of them use those tiny circular batteries that we usually don't have on hand, are dangerous to have around little ones, and don't last very long. Appreciate the review!
Huh... disappointed that these all only do whole-number grams (which, apparently, they're also allowed to be 1-2 grams off by their own standards). Even the OXO was 1 gram off in the intro apple demo, while the rest were fine. Aren't there any scales that'll show grams with a one-tenth decimal (that also don't suck in other ways too much)?
My biggest concerns with a scale is the micro weigh. I didn’t even know that was the name for the problem I have with my scale. It can’t read small grams. So I guess I’ll end up going with the my weigh scale
hello, Lisa Cooks Food, great review. by far the very best. thankyou. I am new to the kitchen and am finding out the hard way, the importance of measuring. between the escali and the ozeri, which would you recommend for home use? (pizza doughs, cookies, cakes, dinner, etc.. ) thanks, rick
Hi Rick, between those two the Escali scored higher in our tests overall. The measuring platform is a bit small though, so before ordering make sure the bottom of your bowls will fit.
Notice that the My Weigh did not register 1 gram when they were slowly adding micro weight? It went from 0 grams to 2 grams without the the testers even noticing. They did not show the OXO while weighing the micro weight. I've had an Ozeri for almost 2 years. It seems quite accurate. I don't notice that it takes long to register. It will weigh 1 gram, which I very often need to weigh.
Most of these scales have significant tare issues. Found that out the hard way. Example my needs (Espresso) where you're dealing with +/- 0.1g making an impact, when you lift a tared container off the scale to remove beans and put it back on the scale your entire tare weight can be off by as much as 1g-4g .. not to mention lag on small weight is exceedingly annoying. If money is no object then I'd strongly recommend the $225 *Acaia Lunar* otherwise the $65 *Timemore B22.* Both are extremely accurate, exceptionally fast and great in the kitchen because they can handle a spill. Clearly in either case depending upon your max weight requirements, the above are approximately 2Kg. Both are USB rechargeable.
Wow, what a fantasic review. Tjis has to be one of the best reviews I've watched maybe ever. You were to the point on the pros, cons and over all explaination about the important things not like other vids long drawn out boring details after details but really saying nothing. Thanks so much, I'm choosing the oxo. I might have missed it but did you mention increments, does it increase by 1g or 2g
Very fun and helpful review. Thank you. None of them is perfect for one reason or another, but I agree the OXO seems the best if both quality and space are important. I just wish it was more like $30. Anyone want to gift me an OXO? 🙃😄
Hi Lisa! I seen that My Weigh is the best you rated here but there is 3 my weigh 800 model which one is the one you test? One with the adapater? Thank you
Lol 😂 that Taylor- during first presentation I said to myself, Ah White minimalist, my winner. I’m gonna buy it. Then the second round review came in.. 😝 Thanks guys, very good reviews
Thanks for this review, but I am curious: what rechargeable digital kitchen scales would you recommend to someone who is trying to move away from the need to use wasteful batteries? (I am an Environmentalist, which is seldom underscored within the culinary industry these days...it used to be underscored in the 90s, however!)
Of the scales I have tried, I could recommend the My Weigh for you. It comes with an ac adapter so you can avoid the use of batteries altogether (though you have that option if necessary). Otherwise, I have not seen any rechargeable scales, but you could perhaps use rechargeable AAs in any standard scale. The batteries in the 2 scales I have owned in the last decade have lasted years with heavy use, so it is not a common battery replacement item in our house.
I know this is old, but I'd advise against things with an internal rechargeable battery if you care about the environment. The problem is they aren't readily replaceable, so you end up throwing the entire scale away into a landfill. I'd suggest rechargeable batteries such as Panasonic Eneloop which come in all standard sizes and can be charged 2000+ times. They can also be recycled at the end.
Where are the USB-C rechargeable scales??? I'll keep using my coffee scale even though it only goes up to 2kg... my old scale burned through aaa's. My timemore gets enough charge to use, faster than a trip to the convenience store and saves the planet while doing so. I use it 1-2x a day and the battery lasts 2-4 weeks with a capacity of 1,600mah. Honestly though replaceable batteries need to be replaced... permanently.
@@LisaCooksFood Lol! Yeah! Also, does the My Weigh scale go on sale a lot? It is was $70, no it is $50, does it go down anymore? Do you think at a certain point in the year it can go down further? Thanks! (edit: why not review kitchen thermometers??) : )
OK about the problem of setting too heavy of a bowl on it, you turn it in, and you get an error message, can you turn it on, set the heavy bowl on, then zero it out?
You should have considered the type of batteries. The mid-size units might use common and high capacity AA batteries that can be recharged. The scale should never power off with those but seem artificially crippled. My scale has approximately 1 kg negative weight, and I can get it to weigh 6.2 kg, over the limit, if I put a kilogram on it before turning it on. For weighing 3 grams you should get another small jeweller's scale for 10 euros, except that it won't be ergonomic, durable and use button cells. The flour and soda pour out of the package in clumps. You poured more carefully for the winner.
Since you only work in grams as I do, I was surprised that you didn't mention gram measurements in your testing! I'm currently seeking a scale that can measure 0.25g and 0.2g! I think that's called metric grams or something like that. My scale will only give me 2g, which is not accurate enough for my formulations! Any suggestions?
My current ones that have a 5KG limit and weigh in 1g increments, seem accurate at lower weights but when it starts getting past 2.5 KG they read about +60g heavier than the actual weight. All I care about it the accuracy at all weights. If I only use those scales to weigh something that's say 2 KG and I want to divide that into 20 containers then I do end up with 100g per container, so they are accurate "to themselves" but overall on heavy weights, not accurate.
Uhhh.... under Speed in the micro-weight section, y'all said the Ozeri was a little better.... but it jumped straight up to 7 grams. 😅 Though the person also might have been pouring just too much too fast. Either that scale was the worst, or it should've had a second try with a slower pour. Y'all should micro-weight test from a spoon or something, so you have a bit more control than trying to tap from the box.
I have a cheapy Weight watchers scale and was using it recently to weigh out 2 lbs of raw chicken. Do these scales Not do pounds? I had to just calculate so many ounces which kinda threw me. Seemed like I had this Gigundo pile of meat on the scale. The pkg I bought was approx what I needed for the recipe but with a bone. So I cut the meat off the bone and then started plopping it on this tiny scale. What a fiasco ... Why did I think it would be so simple to just find 2 lbs of meat?
Fabulous!! I use this scale all the time, and I haven't had to change the batteries since this video was made a couple of years ago. Still love and recommend.
I'm very late to the game here, 2 years late. 😂 But how do these work in reverse? Does anyone do the reverse tare? Which one is best for reverse? That OXO scale went up in price. Of course! 😒 It's been two years. Inflation! I hate it with the "fire of a million suns!" 😂 it's now close to $56 on Amazon.

Thanks this was fairly helpful. Unfortunately I was considering the 5lb OXO so not sure this information is applicable.
Did you get the 5lb OXO? I am also considering and am having difficulty deciding 😊
@@looney8082 yes very happy with it.
Myweigh maestro has an extra ‘precise scale’ which you can pull out.
Thank you!
Very helpful vid. Loved it
Escali it is for me
Thank you for this!
Great review!
Thanks for such a great review 👏🏼
Omg…. I really enjoyed this review. Thank you
Thank for making this vid it's very useful
Uhhh.... under Speed in the micro-weight section, y'all said the Ozeri was a little better.... but it jumped straight up to 7 grams.
How's the battery life of the OXO scale?
Fabulous!! I use this scale all the time, and I haven't had to change the batteries since this video was made a couple of years ago. Still love and recommend.
@@lisaclark9096 You're awesome thank you for the quick response
this is amazing, thank you for making this video!
Perfect review 👍🏼. Thank you so much
Thanks. I hope it helps you “weigh” your options. 😁
