Basch messed around and killed it this olympics!
Thankful I found him, he is great media for wrestling!
True stew!
Thank you!
Taylor would’ve literally won tho
Arguable. But brooks earned the spot
We don't know that. He could of lost to that Big Khabib. Stop glazing Taylor.
@@frankiecal3186 Taylor would have won = "glazing"? thats gay af calm down lol
@@frankiecal3186 the p4p #1 being expected to win... keep thinking about dick tho
He definitely would’ve
It was an underperformance period. It's okay to say that but usa wrestling is healthy. I'm not a causal I've been in the sport for 25 years and former college wrestler in d1 so yes it wasn't the best performance. And yes it is disappointing to not have at least a gold.
Exactly. It was an underperformance.
*I don’t hear a lot of people saying “massive” or “drastically”.
What is this revisionist nonsense? The big blue man predicted 5 golds and one bronze for men's Freestyle. The other guy I'm pretty sure predicted gold for Spencer, Dake, and Brooks.
Lol, don't think I predicted 5 gold medals, but I'd still be very high on Team USA if they re-ran the Olympics back next week! In hindsight, I definitely underestimated the strength of Japan and some other competitors, and the performance they were about to have, no doubt!
@@JustinBaschno doubt, I think we all did
@@JustinBaschwhat’s crazy is the amount of guys from Dagestan winning medals for other countries.
The women’s team had their best performance ever, coach Steiner has said multiple times this year that he wanted them together more than normal and it seemed to work out. Maybe the men’s team should try it. Hypothetically speaking maybe the US should develop more of a team style. Sure seems to workout for Japan and Russia traditionally. Either way we better enjoy the time we have left with Kyle dake, Kyle Snyder, Zain and even Spencer! Generational talents!
Don’t sleep on the youngsters! Some absolute stars coming the next decade…
@@opaca512yeah our next generation is going to throttle competition at u20s and u23s coming up!
Hopefully it transitions to senior level.
We are the most resourced country in the world, I can't speak to twitter comments, but we definitely under performed this year on the men's side. This is on the US wrestling infrastructure, and coaches (lack of approach and strategy), it's not the athletes fault at all. We need to bring the dagastanis in across the board, and totally replace the coaching staff. There are many better international coaches, and they should be running the show. I've been watching wrestling for 25 years, US wrestling is getting outclassed defensively. That's a fact, look at the points given up compared to the previous numbers.
I liked wrestling better when Burroughs was leading the way. The teams just seemed way better. I hope we don't decline from here. Burroughs brought us to the golden era of wrestling.
Willie spot on with match tactics and adjustments.
I really love Willie’s analysis.
Don't we all!
Huge wrestling fan. High expectations yes. To just qualify for the Olympics wrestling team is phenomenal! To defeat a former gold medalist in the trials is phenomenal. Expectation is that wrestler wins the gold. They know it. There are Russian wrestlers competing for other countries such as he who defeated Brooks. Whatever Japan is doing is worth looking at. World championships are great and then there’s the Olympic gold. Thanks for putting on this UA-cam chat. I would love to hear what Dan Gable has to say.
7:20 Willie with the “name drop”
It was nice to hear from Willie this week . I haven’t seem him regularly on podcasts since he split with Flo.
Also, the problem is that everyone sees us coming from a mile away. We don't make our opponents uncomfortable. We don't move around, there's no faints or any set ups to keep our opponents honest on their feet. All they have to do is learn to hand fight with us and defend head snaps and under hooks. Make got hit with the SAME LOW SINGLE 5 times. You would've thought it was John Smith out there for Christ sakes. Maybe we should get him to coach the damn team. We're just very predictable.
I agree with this whole episode... except Brooks being stock up. I think he can be great in the future. This whole team needs to be better on their feet scoring.
I think we’re always going to have medal chances and contenders which is awesome, our collegiate wrestling competition is always going to produce world class athletes and champions which will be gamers on the world stage. So there’s no reason to hang our heads or push the panic button, but I do think that observing the results and taking stock of what particular moves, offensive and defensive, produced points should be taken seriously and that our athletes should train to go out on the mat and wrestle in such a way that is proven to score points.
Personally. I don’t think Lee underperformed getting Silver. I didn’t expect Zain to do much of anything, especially when the bracket came out. I fully expected a Dake Gold. I think that’s a disappointment. I had brooks getting silver but bronze is not much of a disappointment. Snyder not medaling is a massive disappointment imo, I had him getting bronze, and Parris going 0-1 was a massive disappointment. Overall I think Dake, Snyder, and Parris were the only ones that disappointed
Yeah, but that is 3 out of 6. It feels worse because no one on USA side over performed
I don’t think Snyder is much of a disappointment. He’s been doing this for 10 straight years he was bound to not medal once at some point. And he didn’t lose to smucks either
🔥🙌
I love the gas tank point you guys made. If you lost and you’re not out of breath, what’s the point of the gas tank
Zhamalov is Satiev trained. When he is healthy, extremely fun dude to see compete.
Willie giving the good wrestling perspective - all you can ask for is a decent opportunity at every weight and we have that.
Its not like our guys lost to slouches.
What happened to Nigeria's womens program? I feel like a few years ago they had a really good worlds and had some great young wrestlers. I rember hearing about them for a couple years, but it seems they are just gone now. Kinda like Cuba.
The lack of freestyle experience showed most in the Lee/Higuchi match. Lee was looking for the collar tie/underhook to set up a take down and top control, which he was masterful at dominating during his college career. Higuchi was maintaining space and never giving up the wrist. The match was lost at the hand fighting stage and it wasn't as close as the score indicated because Higuchi kept enough space to ground himself before a third push out. The Brooks semifinal was never in doubt either. Dagestanis are looking for deep shots to counter and get back exposure. The outcome was clear to me after the first period. Assuming the NCAA will never adopt the better style of wrestling, freestyle, as did the women, I don't expect anything more. The only chance is for a great NCAA wrestler to quit competing domestically to focus only on international freestyle opens while conditioning in folkstyle. This should be encouraged.
Lmao
I feel Willie’s rage on this. Instagram comments are ridiculous the last couple days.
I swear I’m going to have a brain aneurism from Instagram comments
That voice Willie does when he's making fun of people is hilarious
makes me laugh every time
Starroci at 86
Zain is getting too much hate. I feel the weight cut down to 65 kg is a lot for him. If their was more weight classes like a 70kg in worlds i feel he would have went a lot farther.
Honestly guys it's simple. The USA has to change their style of wrestling. All that handfighting and trying to beat your opponent up is OVER. IOWA style wrestling is so FREAKING DONE. We have to learn feom space, guys. If you didn't see that this Olympics, then your BLIND. All this trying to fight and dig for undertook ls and front headlocks is OVER. Learn to shoot from space and work on your feet. We looked so damn slow, and everyone except for Brooks was stuck in cement on their feet.
I didnt feel like usa wrestled poorly.
Sometimes the opposition has a great performance and you have to give them credit.
Our guys and girls are bigger and so much stronger, there's no reason for any of them to lose to Japanese wrestlers.
The Japanese wrestlers were often faster. There’s a mantra in sports “speed kills”, I think that proved true this year on the biggest stage.
This was the worst Olympics of all time not only was it terrible but also satanic. The men's wrestling team did ok.
Wow, Spencer catching strays. So what you’re saying is Olympics is less important than a “domestic wrestle back” Spencer should’ve wrestled back for 3rd at the NCAA tournament instead of Zain wrestling back for an Olympic bronze medal… They were both hurt. Why bring Spencer into it? We know Zain is your boy Basch but tighten up. I know a brain injury is severe but one could make an argument saying he could’ve tried to wrestle back since it would be “his last tournament ever”. I love the show and usually agree with most of what you say but take the blinders off and quit the prejudice against Spencer/Hawks. They both made the decision they thought was right for them, don’t compare them.
No need to even bring Spencer into the Zane wrestle back talk. The point could have been made without you taking a passive aggressive shot at Spence. Dork
Lol, you realize I brought that up because people were tweeting about it and I couldnt' believe they made the comparison, correct? Context kind of matters there. So, not a passive aggressive shot, at all, and, it's spelled "Zain."
He just said that’s what people were complaining about, and he said that was stupid: maybe listen next time
Thanks buddy
@JustinBasch I'll give you credit you have responded both times I commented on here (the other one was me accusing you of having a Penn State bias). I actually don't think context was necessary. You could have said: I have seen people throwing shots at "Zain" for not wrestling for Bronze with a concussion. Insert your opinion here. Thanks for responding. Honestly, if I were you, I wouldn't waste my time with it.
The shorter cycle allowed some to compete a bit older.
The gaslighting here from Basch is unbelievable. Willie's picks were more sober, but Basch picked all 6 to medal and ~5 champs.... But says this isn't a letdown???
Just own it ! Don't lie to us and worst of all yourself.
Wow, over here agreeing with Adam. 😅
I expected the Nittany Lion Wrestling crew to be more aggressive on offense. I think weight cut may have impacted some performances.
I think some of the guys didn’t do a good job creating angles and getting to their shots. Kennedy Blades seemed to only shoot from space, and when the Japanese girl found that out, she couldn’t generate anything. Dake let Tahkitani on his ankle 20 thousand times. Can’t make a comeback if your on your heels and but defending shots. Even in the end of Spencer’s Higuchi match, he tried to go upper body then take his shots that he had so much success with all tournament . I’m curious what you guys think
Crazy that USA Wrestling has a $10+ million budget and does zero funding of athletes.
Think about that for a second….
Something has to change or the same will keep happening
Sorry, but Spencer had no chance of winning with the mindset and game plan they came with. There is no way your are going to take gold by just pushing.
I (and mostly agree) get your point. I think “no chance” may be a bit extreme with how close the match was
Seabass should’ve won gold 😢
