Nice to see the South Rim opened to tourists again. When I went they said it was closed due to the pandemic so we opted for the West Rim, which was amazing as well! South Rim is great if you want to do longer hikes, west rim is way more difficult to hike! These are great tips for anyone wanting to hike the rim.
Thanks! We wanted to visit the west rim but it was so far away for the route we were taking - south rim, north rim, page, Bryce. If we’re near Vegas I think we’ll try to go there
It’s definitely the engineering marvel to construct the trail like the south kaibab! The view points from ooh-aah point, Skelton point and cedar ridge are breathtaking! I loved the video! It’s very difficult to capture the breadth of the canyon but you just nailed it! 👍👍👍
Absolutely spectacular! Think I could make it down okay...it is the return that worries me...😰 What a glorious day you had! Take good care now...Bruce and Otis
Yup that’s why we warned people. It’s so easy to go down. Way back up was brutal. We had a few mishaps in starting later and got hit with the heat at the end.
Thanks John. This is one of our favorite hikes ever at this point and we are glad to share! Working on a future Bright Angel video as we speak. That one was incredible as well. The Grand Canyon really is a one of a kind place.
That is not a bad idea at all! We spent about four days on the south rim and three on the north rim. And we still feel like we didn’t see anything. This is definitely bucket list and no photo or video you ever see will do it justice
Wow, we knew the views were going to be incredible so we watched on our big TV! Just amazing. The POV shots even gave us a little vertigo! What a hike! 🦎
What a coincidence. I just said to myself, this deserves a big screen, not my computer monitor! This and one other coming out in maybe two weeks - top 5 hikes we’ve ever done. So I’m prepping to do that. You two know this from experience, but cameras don’t ever get this completely. This looked even more amazing than I can describe or ever show you. Definitely do it one day!
Ahahaha, yeah not too bad. Honestly I'm surprised there aren't more. Some people don't even bring water. We were genuinely concerned for a few people we saw. I think people overestimate their abilities. We have been guilty of this.
Hi! What an awesome video! ❤ we are heading to the GC end of April 2023 with our 2 daughters, then 8,5 and 6,5. We want to walk a short distance into the canyon short after sunrise. We are debating if well walk SK to Ooh Aah point or BA to the second tunnel (1 mile?) before the 1,5 mile restpoint. SK seems more impressive, BA more safe. Maybe they are both not safe enough and well have to forget about this. It’s hard to decide never being there. What is your opinion about this? Thanks so much and keep making this awesome and helpful videos! Greeting from the Netherlands!
Thank you so much. I think you are better with going to Ooh Aah. It's probably the best view of that hike and is indeed more impressive than Bright Angel for the same amount of mileage. While 1.8 miles round trip to Ooh Aah isn't easy, it's totally doable. If your daughters have issues with fitness or what have you, they are likely to have them on either trail. South Kaibab, while slightly steeper, would be our choice. If we only had limited time to hike in the Grand Canyon, heading to Ooh Aah would be what we do.
No problem! I might not be the best person to ask this, because I pretty much load up on water, even if I wind up not drinking half of it, but whatever you’re used to drinking, double it at least. I can’t remember exactly but I likely brought 80-100 ounces. Better to have too much lol
Dear friend Thank you for uploading a wonderful video. I watched it in full and received high praise. I love your channel! It was I will come again. 🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌛🌟🌟🌟
Hi M&G. I'm planning a summer trip to the Grand Canyon and this hike is on my must do list. Can you tell what you used to film this video? It came out great. An iPhone or GoPro and did you use a hand-held stick mount or some kind of hands free mount such as a backpack mount? Great video and thank you!
Thanks! It’s mostly a GoPro 8, with some iPhone shots and some with a Sony mirrorless camera. I have used all kinds of sticks and mounts and what I use generally and for this video is the GoPro hand and wrist mount. When I film I basically walk like I’ve thrown a punch out in front of me. I like the stabilization and being able to see what I’m filming, plus the flexibility to move wherever I want by moving my arm. Normally surfers etc use it but I found it to be the best for most stuff while hiking.
@@MagellanandGreyhound Thanks for the reply. Does your hand not get tired holding it to film? I assume from the length of your video that you did not record the entire trail, but I've seen another video using an iPhone where they filmed the entire hike up to Cedar Ridge. I would think that would be taxing but so many hikers seem to be able to record holding their phone or GoPro for extended lengths. I assume you took this hike recently before you posted the video? Could you tell me what time you started the trail?
No, I only shoot for maybe 30 seconds max. I find the same footage of the same view for minutes to be personally boring. I know some don't feel that way. Between the two of us, we had about an hour of footage for this video (which is excessive). I have used a chest and a head mount before and you will get way more footage through ease of use, but it may not be as good because you can't see it as you're filming, despite not having to hold it up. The bursts of filming with the GoPro on my wrist is a nice balance with the fact that I want to hike as my first priority. We did this in late September and started late, maybe around 7am, and finished around noon with a long lunch break in between. Our videos are on delay because it takes awhile LOL. 21 south rim viewpoints, the Bright Angel hike, mule riding on the north rim, etc are coming eventually.
That's a good idea, didn't think to do that. From what I remember, it took probably 20 minutes to Ooh Aah, 20 to Cedar Ridge, and maybe 45 or so to Skeleton Point. We tend to go kind of fast going down. Took maybe 4.5-5 hours total round trip with lunch, drink breaks, bathroom and obviously stopping to video. :) Hope that helps.
This was late September. I think probably around 5-6am right at sunrise. It took about 6 hours I think. We spent too much time eating, sightseeing and got baked on the way back.
Not for the portion we showed here, no. There's a campsite called Bright Angel 4 miles or so down by the river. If you do another trail - also called Bright Angel, there will be a campsite called Indian Garden at about 3 miles or so and then it will link up with the Bright Angel campsite I mentioned above.
I have to say South Kaibab trial is poorly prepared. Grand Canyon is such a famous place in America. With huge resource of this country, it has to be something available for tourists after all these years. There is no reason this trail still doesn't have water supply. If this national park can make it better, it will make Grand Canyon much more accessible for ordinary people.
I'm not taken by Grand Canyon, it's the same sights wherever you look. I came here looking for something new. But, no. It still looks the same to me - some higher spots, soem lower spots, some rockier, but all the same color and same sparse areas. The Gtand Canyon is overrated for non-hikers and those looking for beautiful sights. But, it's good to see it once in your life and cross it off.

Beautiful area, Hard to imagine anyone ill prepared! Just looking at it is intimidating💪👍🏼🇺🇸
Oh there's plenty that show up ill prepared. No water, no nothing. It was a great hike!
Wonderful video! Very nice. Thank you for sharing~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nice video... I especially appreciate the minimal narration and just letting the landscape speak for itself. Thanks
Thank you! It’s a delicate balance. I never feel like we talk enough and that’s probably how we should keep it. :)
Watching from Nz. Visiting here again. Beautiful views! Scary walking trails!
Thank you! They weren't as scary as they looked, and they were more beautiful than they looked here! 😀
Gorgeous hike! Definitely a lot of great views.

Shot at 4:10 to 4:20 great, showing (l think) the shadow of the ridge you're descending.

How far from ooh aah point to this beautiful spot 5:10?
Oh not very long at all. 1/4 mile max and I may be overstating it.

People keep saying it is 10 times harder to go back up. I felt it was 50X. I did cedar ridge then back.
It’s never easy to estimate how hard it is to go back up, but it’s always harder! I’m sure it was worth it though 😁
