There's an element of tuning in between stations on shortwave radio that puts me in mind of the theremin. Locating something interesting, something hidden. It is easy to wave away Brian Wilson as an eccentric but his lucidity was faster than his verbal acumen. His problems were largely organizational. It is a miracle therefore that the output is there for us to hear. In that respect he like a Van Gogh or a Tesla. He prioritized his vision over almost everything else, and as we've seen time and again, society rejects and exploits the visionary. Brian Wilson must have been a handful. But wow! What he allowed us to carry!
Brilliant commentary! I've always wanted to sit Brian down on a couch and analyze him, and your assessment is similar to that of my own. 👏 мне очень грустно, что вы поддержали Украину 😔 ☦🇷🇺
The "theremin" sound on Good Vibrations was not made with a theremin like the one Brian is sitting behind in this video. It was made with an electro-theeremin aka a slide theremin aka a tannerin aka Paul's Box, and played by Paul Tanner, who was a trombonist in Glenn Miller's band. The theremin, like the one in front of Brian, is the only musical instrument you do not touch to play. You touch the tannerin by moving a slide up and down the scale. Brian used a tannerin when he was touring, and you can see it played in some of the videos from his tours.
Brian was 50 years old here - he looks far far younger and incredibly youthful - Dr. Landy had him working out everyday - super clean diet, no drugs no alcohol, tons of supplements, vitamins - you can see the benefits of his healthy lifestyle -
Capitol Records was pushing the theremin as far back as the 50s. They released a single with Theremin as the artist ? No human name, just "theremin". Besides the Beach Boys Lothar and the Handpeople were also a Capitol act that used it.
this solidifies to me that carls death made him the way he is now. he was almost completely normal here. his symptoms definitely worsened after carl and the overmedication made him loopy and distant
Brian literally has an anxiety attack in this video, his hand hands were completely shaking - i dont know if this is the best example of Brian being normal.
Maybe, but also this was almost 35 years ago now. I think it was the overmedication that did most of it. But there’s a big difference cognitively between 50 and 80 a lot of the time. Hell even 70 and 80 can be a big difference. Like sure, he’s somewhat notoriously a bad interview, but even in the 60s he didn’t seem fully in his element doing interviews. Brian’s happy place has always been in the studio. The public appearances was always his least favorite part of the job, even when he was a 22 year old kid.
We need more people like Brian.❤❤❤
Brian imitating a theremin is something that I didn't expect to hear today, but I'm very glad I did!

You can even see someone playing it in the background of the band footage they're showing.
One of the best ever put on this planet! Love ya Brian!
Hearing Brian try to describe his thoughts and what he's trying to express is fascinating, mere glances are enough to feed my curious mind
I absolutely love Brian in this interview. I completely understand him
Nobody else thinks about sound the way Brian Wilson does
*Wooo that’s a great fuckin’ record man*
I had never seen this interview. Thanks for posting it
Man, Brian looked like a rock star back then!
i think he looked like an business man on the weekend here haha
@@dmer-zy3rb maybe, but compared to how he appeared in later years, he looks amazing here. Like a real surfer!
Great hair.
💯 Agree! Through it all, Brian has always had great hair. 😊
"Children of God" then some swearing like a sailor! Lol

Nah Brian just had a Facelift and is in full makeup here that's it. The lifestyle he had with landy was not healthy.
@@dmer-zy3rb stop lying none of that is true
@@justinherbert9146 are you Landys son or something?
This is right before he gained all the weight in the 90s
Looking like his 64 version here
@@dmer-zy3rbActually I have heard / read that Brian did get a facelift after he lost all that weight.
wow brian was pretty lucid here
Great video
Brian beat Theremin's Thermits to the punch.
He was on Dr Landy’s drugs here. Sad.

Was Brian greying or did he dye his hair?
Serendipity
GD Landy.
Gene D. Landy?

I agree. In recent years, interviewers can barely get a word out of him. He's shut down, basically given up, just takes the path of least resistance.

@@dmer-zy3rb it certainly isn’t- but considering how bad things get after this, i’d say this is closer to him being normal than after carls passing

He's much younger and probably on some sort of drugs/medication here.
Brian really needed to cut down on the chemicals....
Eugene Landy was overmedicating Brian with drugs that weren't even meant for his condition, so that had a lot to do with it.
Was Brian on drugs?
