The mid 90s seemed like a great time for Brian. He seemed happy and energetic in his interviews and the music he created with Payley was so good! By the time you get to Imaginations, it seems that medication or something is dragging him down.
Thank you for sharing these classic moments when we were granted a glimpse of who he would have been without the abusive therapy including the excess medication. Rare and pure footage of Brian unlike any other…
Thank you so much, LUNAR LONER, for posting this. I think it shows Brian Wilson in a relatively good place. It certainly shows his unique sense of humour, and at that time his voice is very good sounding. Love it. Also liked seeing Van Dyke Parks.
it's interesting how much his demeanor changed from here to 98/99 when imagination came out and he started touring. there was something a lil subdued about him. maybe cause of carl's death
yeah, it's almost like that "old Brian" era began all of a sudden in 98, the increase in slurring of words, overall slowness (compared to years before). I wonder if it was medication changes.
Could very well be different combinations of meds from one year to the other. Some meds might work wonders for your core issue(s) but might also dull you a bit in a couple other ways. If the pros are deemed to outweigh the cons, then a person may stick with them. I think Brian stopped smoking cigarettes in that time, too. Obviously I have no idea what caused the change, just naming a few other possibilities. The guy was going through his 50s at the time, too. Not unusual for someone to slow down a bit at that age.
@A S If you watch the documentary I Wasn't Made for these Times from 1994, he is very similar. He definitely changed around 1998. He actually has personality here. His mid 90s sessions with Andy Paley might be his best music.
8:02 proof that Brian's voice was never fully destroyed in the mid 70s. There were a couple random moments throughout the 80s and 90s where he was able to sound like his younger self albeit briefly.
@@magictransistorradio4933 It wasn't just a songwriters' symposium, it was also a benefit concert with the proceeds going to the care/maintenance of the Will Geer Amphitheatre. And yes, Van Dyke is back there. They performed separately that day--Van Dyke did his own rendition of Orange Crate Art.
Not only is Brian THE greatest living legend Period but the world will Never have an icon of his caliber EVER! What the Beach Boys did in the 60s , & the Ramones did in the (late) 70s is THE epitome of Real Rock.
To think on the road the Boys kept the music and sales of tix without Brian, is a testament to genius of Brian's composition genius. And just total devotion to his art.
Do you have footage of the rest of this performance? I was there, and Rickie Lee Jones sang a beautiful version of Don't Worry Baby. She told us she didn't remember all the lyrics. So she was looking directly at Brian during the entire song, as he mouthed the words, and we the audience, sang along as help. I know I had tears in my eyes, as did many others there that day during that song. This was directly after Chris asked the artists about their influences. She sang Don't Worry Baby, then Angel From Montgomery, by John Prine as two of her influences. Besides Brian, Van Dyke, and Rickie Lee, the others were Stan Ridgeway, Billy Swan, plus Ry Cooder and Fred Tackett on guitars. I spoke to both Rickie and Van Dyke afterwards. Tried to talk to Brian, but he ran away. I never thought I'd ever see this footage. Please post the rest if you can.
Van Dyke wrote some really great music with Brian, too bad Smile never got it's proper release back in the 1960s. It was a great time in pop music with experimentation in sounds, Smile would've been a masterpiece. But Brian did need to take a break, he created so much in a small amount of time. He was gone from pop music for way too long.
Van Dyke Parks adjusted Brian's vocal microphone! What a gentleman!
Brian has a great personality, can't help but love him!

i’m in love with brian’s sense of humor
he's always been much funnier than people realize
this shows intimacy/proximity really helps i feel like. its like he’s just playing some fun music he likes for his friends :)
I cracked in God Only Knows roflmao
he’s super funny, always being overlooked
Building his confidence in the 90's
Always leave us wanting more. Love his autobiography. He was a peach, lucky Melinda 😊
4:04 that's one of the funniest things I've ever heard Brian say. i love his sense of humor
When Brian gets into Do It Again we are all with him. Thanks for sharing.
Damn Brian in fine voice doing Be My Baby & actually performing on piano too. Awesome to see.

That falsetto 🔥 8:01
Big guy's got such a a great sense of humor. Rock on Brian ~~~
This is incredible, thanks for sharing!
Glad to see you, buddy!
Ah, ha! THE Giggens! Very cool!💯
A humble, sweet, gentle soul. Oh! And a legendary composer also.
Ya know, I think Brian would have also made a great comedian.
Gosh I wish I could have been there that day. What a Legend he is. Thanks for posting this. 👍🏼😎

Touring is probably a bigger stress than a little informal show here and there.

He had a show similar to this with the fender interview a few years back..I think big crowds just affect him to a degree we cant even understand

I would've loved to see him back then.
Brian can be very funny. He has a unique way of looking at things
This is just awesome.
So cool to see Brian play a CP70
This is pure gold ! Awsome footage! Thank you for sharing this moment! 🎶🎶✌💚

did he ever really sound again like his younger self? no. did he from time to time surprise us with good vocals anyway? of course!
I was at this show! What a treat. We were hanging around outside while the rehearsal was going on, and you could hear Brian's voice BOOMING out!
What was this for? I see Van Dyke sitting behind him.

wow that's great
Brian really connects with something great on the second verse of God Only Knows here
Fantastic footage.
Wonderful Brian.
The 90s were so much cooler than now
Brian was ruthless to mike in the 90s. I cant help but laugh though.
Mike was a bellend after the release of kokomo. Still is
"i dont like Mike love at all"
Mike was also ruthless to Brian at this time.
@@yourmother3207 Their worst song.
Wow awesome. A genius for sure!
Finally I get to see this. Thank you!

its so funny how he jumps down the stage at 8:08 😁 he was kind of fast
That inner track runner in him.
Great talented man
Is it Van Dyke Parks sitting behind him and having fun?
Brian must be so fun when he’s ok..
Nice great piano player
what he said about Mike Love? Couldn't understand.

I never thought I'd see VDP in a Beach Boys song "clap along"
Does VDP sing at all on this? Like backing vocals?
why does he need so sing? since when does VDP sing in beach boys songs?
@@dmer-zy3rb just asked if he sang, why are you so offended? Also, he did sing on Day in Life of Tree, so there, that's when.
@@justinplank unless he did some backround vocals he didnt even sing that, no.
@@dmer-zy3rbwell, he did... The line "trees like me were meant to live" towards the end is him.
That's Van Dyke Parks sitting next to him. Was Brian expecting a tummy rub?
well he does pull his shirt up and takes a look at his tummy at 0:12 🧐
is that van dyke behind him?
