Anthony Simmons just don’t imagine it.. it’s what happens your not here to stay it’s just a blessing to live long to get to her age she’s experienced so much in life got to do many things others haven’t and will never get to do so bless her she’s gone on to be with the lord I just hate to hear folks say she’s in hell No she isn’t she goin to heaven when she gets judged..
It just dawned on me that she was saying goodbye. According to the last verse, she was playing this song directly to God and telling him, "When I cross over, take me into your arms." She knew her sun was setting. As the tears roll down my cheeks while I type this, it also dawns on me that maybe the title "Queen" was a bit to small for such an angelic soul. If I've ever heard God sing, it was because I heard Ms. Franklin. Thank you for sharing your immeasurable gifts with us Queen Angel Aretha Franklin. There will never be another. You've lived a life poured out. You've earned your right to rest well. Salute.
I don’t think she was in physical pain at that moment as some have suggested, I think the gravity of being in the sanctuary were everything started in her life was just extremely overwhelming. She seemed unusually emotional as if she knew life was coming to a close for her and that building was making it real.
Aretha was excellent. For those who didn’t catch it, she has what musicians call “absolute pitch”. In the very beginning, she sings the G# she wants the organists to play. Amazing. Rest In Peace Aretha.
Raydoffa Braziel She’s actually singing mostly in mixed voice - very head-dominant mix but mix nonetheless. She used a lighter and lighter mix with age - less full-voice belting. But her 2015 Kennedy Center performance of “Natural Woman” proved beyond any doubt that she could still belt her ass off in later years. I think she was just less consistent and more easily fatigued as she got older. Here she is sitting down - which makes singing in full voice harder - and is plainly really tired. She actually looks a bit sick and in pain. I think this day she just might not have been able to sing in full voice. And she didn’t need to - on this song, the light, almost wailing sound made the performance even more plaintive and soul-searing. RIP Aretha, you will be missed.
She actually lost a lot of her range in her chest voice in the early 80's due to heavy smoking and improper vocal care. What's amazing is that she adapted, and never let it hinder her. She improved her head voice tremendously, and her bottom end gained so much strength and resonance - She was truly a remarkable vocalist
Last verse: While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyes shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See Thee on Thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee Amen Aretha! You have crossed over into his loving arms!! Thank you for your lasting gift of song!
Your comment should be at the top. Albeit the lyrics to the song, I imagine the words had sat in here Spirit for sometime - modern medicine almost always gets life expectancy, after a diagnosis, right. God bless you Areatha. Rest on, REST ON.....
Tears of grief for her father no doubt. He was the pastor of that church until he was murdered. He was shot by a burglar and lingered in a coma for five years until he died in 1984.
Thomas Siab She died from it but God makes no mistakes her took her home cause it was her time. Aretha Franklin is now singing g with the Angels in heaven.
I wish gospel music sounded like this today.......so sad that we have to reach back to Mahalia Jackson, The Gospel Clefs, The Gospel Keynotes & many many more & now Aretha Franklin to get this Spirit-filled sound.
Terra Fitchett IKR. I’m not knocking today’s artists but when you go back to Queen Mahalia Jackson and Queen Aretha Franklin & all the other greats who have gone on, they poured in so much anointing & soul in their music. Hell all they had to do was sing the first 10 seconds into the song & people started shouting & the church was lit
Aretha is very emotional in this video , she doesn't look like she is in pain , i think she knew her time was coming as i see her look around the church & said " my dad built this place xxx "🌷👑❤
My mother was battling stage 4 and was on deathbed but still hanging on to the Lord. I believe she's in heaven now with my father. RIP to both of them and to Ms. Aretha.
My heart is broken. No one has contributed to the soundtrack of the world in the fashion that Queen Aretha Franklin has. I miss her. The world misses her. We are blessed to have seen her during our time. Thank you Lord. Keep taking care of our precious Aretha. 😭😭😢😞
I so, so agree, Felicity. Something is different. In a very beautiful and peaceful way. Her heart is poured into this. Grace, love, honor. It’s almost like she is talking to the Angels...
Right now listening to this, I can't hardly hold my peace. The spirit is moving upon me right now. That is what Aretha will do to you. Her voice will move you closer to God!! Rest in Peace my beloved!!
Going back to the church her dad pastored until he was murdered by a burglar was too much for her to bear. Every time she went back she shed tears of grief. That's why she didn't want to stay very long.
Haven't met Aretha and never will, but every time she sang it's like you have known her all your life. I am blessed to haven experienced such a talent in my life time. To the Franklin family no words can console you this is not a lossbut a void in our time........long live thee Queen!!
I met her several times. First time I was maybe three years old. My dad and her dad worked together on civil rights issues. He was a leader in the civil rights movement and my dad was a social worker for the Detroit Civil Rights Commission.
Your voice allowed us to feel your soul, Your gift helped us to be whole, From this journey to the next, Forever given RESPECT, we love you until the end of time, A soul like yours we will never find. We love you and miss you dearly my Queen of soul. 😘🕊
This performance felt personal and raw and real. The emotions were very high as you can tell. I don't know how long it has been since she been in her childhood church, but it just felt so powerful and emotional even for her.
She had a lot of grief filled memories in that building. Her father was the pastor until he was shot by a burglar in June 1979. He spent the last five years of his life in a coma because he lost too much blood to keep his brain oxygenated. He died in 1984. They were going to just let him die at the hospital but one of the nurses at Henry Ford Hospital recognized who he was and advocated for him to be put on life support. Aretha was playing a gig in Vegas when she got the news about the shooting.
What an amazing God given talent! She was nurtured by Gospel Pioneers Mahalia Jackson and Clara Ward to name a few. What a fitting song to sing “Rock of Ages” Rest in Power Aretha
It was as if she knew that she wouldn’t be with us much longer. Rest In Heaven “ReRe”. You will be greatly missed BUT FOREVER LOVED!!!!🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 #AndThatsReal
I can only imagine how she felt walkin into a church where alllll of her loved ones funerals were held. I'm sure it brought back memories that she hasn't thought of in forever. Idk but as a Detroiter, it feels like a loss of a family member. R.I.P. Queen
teresahen To be honest, she fought that disease off for 8 yrs..She had more music for us..her cancer came out of remission in 2017 after this was taped..
This was nostalgic and overwhelming for her in the good sense that she knew who and what she was singing of she was moved by the spirit. You can see and hear it at the end that she knew her time wasn’t long you can also see that she was at peace. This song was almost like a prayer for her she now hiding and resting in him. Well done Ree RIH and also rest on to her organist Darryl Houston who died back in March.
New Bethel Baptist was never the same after Rev. Franklin was gunned down by a burglar. The absence of his powerful voice echoing off the walls always brought her grief back to the surface whenever she went back to New Bethel Baptist after he was shot.
"...He is the Lord of Lords And the King of Kings Hallelujah!..." Her passion and her faith... This is what i call Worship and Praise. Thank you Lord for Aretha's gifts. Amen.
This was...powerful! The Queen performing her “Swan Song” and what a song selection at that “Rock of Ages” You can tell she was overcome with pure raw emotion. Being in the place where it all began, near the end of your life. My God! I felt this!
I'm glad Aretha left us this beautiful hymn . It makes me feel so sad knowing she's no longer with us and it makes me rejoice knowing that she made it in . God bless The Queen of Soul , forever in my heart .
I watch these videos not just because Ms Aretha Franklin had an ethereal and uplifting voice but because I don’t want her to leave. No one can or will ever replace her. I am grateful that I lived during her lifetime. That was such a blessing to me. Once in a lifetime.
Aretha delivers so much emotion , joy, soul. Her facial expressions convey to me that she was looking over her life, reflecting the joy's and some lost of people close to her.
One of her last best performance I really like 🙌🏼. Feels like she gave every last drop of her soul and poured it into this song with her amazing voice 💯🙏🏼. Who’s still here in January 2020?
Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Cleanse me from its guilt and power. Not the labour of my hands Can fulfill Thy law's demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless, look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Saviour, or I die! While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyes shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See Thee on Thy judgement throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee.
Crooning4Leftovers thank for posting the lyrics to this beautiful hymn tears are flowing My mother loved this old hymn My brother father and mother passed away recently in less than three months of each other How I miss them there just aren't words to describe the anguish of grief but I know where they are and that is my comfort and also knowing my precious Lord and Savior
Crooning4Leftovers So beautiful Buda put those words in writing then we can all read and think about what each and every word means. I want to say thank you, thank you for the time it took you to do that , and thank you for putting those words there for soul that may be lost. 💞
Thank you dearest Aretha, job here on Earth very well done. You have left so much on earth to touch our souls. Now sing for the heavens. RIP our soulful angel.
I would have been a crying, shouting MESS when she finished that song. They would have had to literally pick me up off the floor!! My God that woman was ANOINTED!! God bless you Queen Aretha! Rest in sweet heavenly peace!
Wow, I had goosebumps the second she played the piano, Could see the emotion in her face, God is good!! We truly have lost the ultimate female vocalist, Much love Aretha, We miss you
It's 2023 now. Almost 36 years ago I sat about 30 feet away from where she was sitting in this video and watched her perform a gospel concert with her sisters and Mavis Staples. The performance was recorded and released as a double LP gospel album in December 1987. I got goosebumps as soon as I heard the first five notes of Ave Maria come out of her mouth.
Lord have mercy! Damn she took me to church. I felt this and I've never seen her shed tears like that. This must've been truly moving and humbling for her. This beautiful, gracious and vibrant spirit will be missed. It's as if in every word she sings is a brick she laid for her heavenly home.
This made me cry, but even in the end she still had that gift of soulful music. What was more moving is that she was close to her father and spoke about how her dad built that church. She reminds me of my mom I lost. I really gotta stop looking at this, but Aretha was one of my mothers favorite song artist. I definitely see why my mother appreciated this womans musical gift .
OH wow I have always admired Ms. Franklin's singing...She is still soooo awesome...One of the greats...Thanks. " Just in case you were to see this from where you are...Bless you Ms. Franklin.
Oh no I am sooooo sorry I will truly miss her I so admired that woman- all my life. My heart hurts actually but I know at lest now I can talk to her in my prayers and I believe she will here me better than a phone. Oh man we are loosing all the real stars "when they stood for something' She really was someone to really look up to with her life. Such a woman and there are so few of that standard, Don't know I will ever be her equal. She deserves that peice of my heart. At least 58 years worth or so. Rest in peace my friend that I never got to personally see. Be well and have a really terrific time with the Lord. You worked so hard for it...Now She was a Woman of Quality.
Rest in Heavenly peace, my enormously gifted dear friend, Darryl Houston and the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. My heart is still heavy having lost you both in such a close span of time. You two are truly missed.
I knew Aretha Franklin wayback in the 80s.At a tender young she is very a beautiful woman and very charming. Her duo with Jocelyn Brown You're truly the Queen of Soul
You can't help but feel the presence of GOD in this performance. I'm moved to tears thank you Almighty GOD for sharing your child Aretha Franklin with the world. LONG LIVE THE QUEEN !!!💎💎💎
No doubt The Queen of Soul. Her roots run so deep. Generations of Souls are heard when she sings. Thank goodness we have the recordings. To God be the Glory 💐
This has made me sob, you can see how moved she is in reflection. What a life, what a legacy and my god what a voice . There is nobody like Aretha Franklin, she is royalty! Think about you everyday aretha x
You can see clearly she's not well. She even looked like she was in slight pain here. LORD have mercy on this greatly beloved sister. She has been through a lot in life.
I just know her and Whitney are taking center stage together above the clouds; dueting in their PRIME vocals (Whitney's voice in the 80's/early 90's, Aretha in the 60's/early 70's) Just imagine if they had both been in their vocal primes at the very same time, during their time on this undeserving Earth? It would've been incandescent and damn-near cataclysmic!
Yes, she had to be helped up the stairs. However, when I saw her in 2017, she walked on stage. Stayed on stage for 1-1/2 hrs. Took 2 breaks, sat down one time, played the piano. Sang. She didn't look like anything was wrong.
When people ask for proof of God’s existence they should watch this video, and if they ask for more they should refer to Ms. Franklin - The Queen of Soul’s entire history. His love is in her heart and she poured it out to us every chance she got, even when she didn’t need to. Thank you for blessing our generation, and every generation that gets to be exposed to God through his daughter. Rest in heavenly Power Aretha ♥️♥️♥️
The Queen of Soul took it back where it all began. And one person, who I noticed was Darryl Houston on the organ. He played with/for Ms. Franklin for years, even at her last Super Bowl appearance. I miss them both as Darryl preceded Ms. Franklin in death by two or three months.
The look on her face after she got done playing says a lot!! She was probably having a lot of memories from playing as a child as well. In addition, to her dad being there.
Very moving to watch this. She was a Daddy's girl. The Preacher's daughter right to the end. Rest in Glory, Ms Franklin, you made your Daddy proud. Never will forget you!
No matter how tired and physically sick she became, she still brought the fire of the Holy Spirit when opened her mouth to sing. Truly an anointed woman.
No plastic surgeries, no autotune, just real. I wonder how many generations will go by before the world will understand how monumental she is. Long live the Queen of Soul. 🙏🏾
Your comment is so profound because it took me a while to understand the magnitude of her gift. I tried to watch the VMA Awards tonight & it was just depressing. Most couldn't sing & the few who could actually sing were technically good but didn't have any real passion. Aretha interpreted every word of every song, reached into your gut and grabbed it: tone, range, power, interpretation, perfect pitch. These current singers aren't even on the same planet as her. Her talent was somewhat recognized, though, because she was requested at every pivotal moment-- from MLK's funeral to several presidential inaugurations to standing in for Pavarotti. Whenever they needed someone with unequaled talent and gravitas, it was Aretha. Not even talented vocalists like Jen Hudson can match what Aretha had. She was like the sun and the moon-- you just took it for granted she was there, because she was always present in the background throughout the stages of our lives.
Only a wig 😂😂😂
I hate to see my icons get older and become seniors. This was in 2016, she still had the VOICE. I keep thinking if she was in denial about her cancer up to the end.
@ escales And the few who did perform had no clothes on!
ali stop it

Aretha was excellent. For those who didn’t catch it, she has what musicians call “absolute pitch”. In the very beginning, she sings the G# she wants the organists to play. Amazing. Rest In Peace Aretha.
Perfect pitch.

New Bethel Baptist was never the same after Rev. Franklin was gunned down by a burglar. The absence of his powerful voice echoing off the walls always brought her grief back to the surface whenever she went back to New Bethel Baptist after he was shot.
"...He is the Lord of Lords
And the King of Kings
Hallelujah!..."
Her passion and her faith... This is what i call Worship and Praise. Thank you Lord for Aretha's gifts. Amen.
The look in her eyes at 1:10 sent chills over my body. 😩 I still cannot believe she left us. Long live the QUEEN of Soul! 👑🙏❤
This was...powerful! The Queen performing her “Swan Song” and what a song selection at that “Rock of Ages” You can tell she was overcome with pure raw emotion. Being in the place where it all began, near the end of your life. My God! I felt this!
Hallelujah to his name. R.I.P QUEEN
One of the greatest female singers
Of all times,God rest your soul
I'm glad Aretha left us this beautiful hymn . It makes me feel so sad knowing she's no longer with us and it makes me rejoice knowing that she made it in . God bless The Queen of Soul , forever in my heart .
That just blessed me. Brought tears to my eyes and shivers through my body. Thank you again Ms. Aretha. ❤
February 2022. Aretha's voice will never grow old.
September 1, 2023❤️
The Queen singer of singers an angel's come from heaven return to heaven, rest in love Aretha...
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Cleanse me from its guilt and power.
Not the labour of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Saviour, or I die!
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgement throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

and the great organist with her, Darryl Houston, left us in march of this year!
Oh my I didn't no who that man was on the organ. But thanks for sharing
WHAT???
Yes, I was looking to see if anyone else was familiar with him as well. Her organist for years. He had cancer as well I believe.
morgank19 yes, I'm not sure if it was cancer but his sister went to check on him after he told her by phone he needed a nap before a rehearsal.
My gawd
The best singer to ever live 🙌🏾🙏🏾
This made me cry, but even in the end she still had that gift of soulful music. What was more moving is that she was close to her father and spoke about how her dad built that church. She reminds me of my mom I lost. I really gotta stop looking at this, but Aretha was one of my mothers favorite song artist. I definitely see why my mother appreciated this womans musical gift .
Rock of ages was a staple song in my home growing up.
Rest in paradise Queen..
Sis can you sing..are did you sing growing up
Words can’t even describe how amazing she was
Is* her genius renders her immortal

The anointing on this woman's life, speaks for her and validates God's approval. Let any naysayers have a seat. Thank you.

My heart hurts actually but I know at lest now I can talk to her in my prayers and I believe she will here me better than a phone. Oh man we are loosing all the real stars "when they stood for something' She really was someone to really look up to with her life. Wow... Just WOW #RestInJesusQueen
Since this took place two years ago, the woman was 74 years old. What a phenomenon. Queen then, queen now, queen forever.
A CHOSEN VESSEL She was simply emotional. This was where her career started (excluding her life in Tennessee) and ended
I just know her and Whitney are taking center stage together above the clouds; dueting in their PRIME vocals (Whitney's voice in the 80's/early 90's, Aretha in the 60's/early 70's)
Just imagine if they had both been in their vocal primes at the very same time, during their time on this undeserving Earth? It would've been incandescent and damn-near cataclysmic!
Master Superblaster agreed
God bless you Miss Aretha Franklin.
Very moving to watch this. She was a Daddy's girl. The Preacher's daughter right to the end. Rest in Glory, Ms Franklin, you made your Daddy proud. Never will forget you!
