- The Calf Slicer or Calf Crusher is a compression lock that drives your shinbone into the calf muscle of the opponent. In this study, I analyse its use in MMA.
The Calf Slicer is known by a few other names like the calf crank, calf crusher, leg slicer or thigh slicer and all work on the same principle of driving the a done into the muscle of an opponent to cause them extreme pain and discomfort. If you have to bail on the calf slicer because it isn't working (a rarity) you still have the option for other leg locks.

I don't go for it much because it almost seems like cheating or might not work if someone really can take pain. I will instead pass it up for the back or twister. There is also the knee vaporizer which is off of the lock down variation called stoner control, the one Eddie got on Royler. It can actually do damage to knee.
A study of Judo vs wrestling in MMA? Personally a very interesting topic for me but I get it if it's too niche
What I mean is how they interact with each other. There's a theory that Judo can be used to counter wrestling

Judo isn't widely used in mma because mma is largely western. In korea and Japan judo programs exist in school similar to how wrestling is in the US, but not many fighters come from there
Nico Repetto @sonny brown this an interesting idea. I think in theory judo can counter wrestling but in practice in current MMA, the rules heavily favor wrestling. For example in the ufc there is a cage, a solid wall, so if I’m a powerful wrestler I can just run through my double leg and keep going keep going until my opponent is pinned against the cage. (See: Khabib Numogomedov, Cormier, etc)
With Judo, I need space where I’m going to throw you, so it doesn’t work as well against the cage (see all the fights where people grab the cage to prevent getting thrown or tripped and it’s NEVER penalized). Also Judo is very high risk high reward rbecause if I try to throw you into open space and I slip (more on this later) then often times I will give up my back which is a disaster in a 3 round fight as you May automatically lose the round if you can’t reverse the position
Wrestling on the other hand is relatively low risk. Once you get past the initial risk of running into a knee or kick or power punch, you’re probably not going to take a lot of damage if your takedown is unsuccessful
As another person mentioned another problem is there just isn’t a lot of tape on good judo players in MMA because it’s not as popular as BJJ or Wrestling. You have Ronda Rousey, and Yoel Romero (though he mostly does trips), and after that you have to go way way back to the old days with Karo Parisyan to see Judo in MMA. Also a lot of the Judo techniques rely on using the opponents Gi to grip which you obviously can’t do in MMA. I could be wrong but I don’t even think there’s a no gi judo competition, so there aren’t many people developing new techniques for MMA
There is ONE era where you can actually see a compelling Judo vs Wrestling debate and that was in the classic Pride Fighting. Pride fighting had some interesting rules that actually leveled the playing field against wrestlers. 1) you could kick and knee downed opponents in the face. Now the penalty for missing a takedown is super high because you can get sprawled on then soccer kicked in the face (see Chute Boxe highlight reel). Also they had ropes on the edge of the ring so wrestlers couldn’t use the edge of the ring to limit opponents mobility. Also strangely you had the option to wear a gi , so there were a lot of weird throws and chokes being done.
Last but not least, an under appreciated rule in Pride was you couldn’t elbow a downed opponent. Nick Diaz famously explained why this was great for BJJ vs wrestling. He said this rule prevented wrestlers from taking you down, and then holding you down and just throwing elbows to score points. the space the top player needs to create to throw a meaningful punch is the same space the bottom player needs to hip escape, threaten submissions, etc.
Hopefully there will be a renassaince in MMA Judo techniques but I’m not holding my breath. Another interesting paradigm shift that Sonny Brown could cover is the old school vs new school jiu jitsu. In no gi competition the trend has completely shifted away from the traditional Brazilian jiu jitsu and is now very leglock heavy and this is making its way into MMA (see Ryan Hall). It’s really interesting to compare how Demian Maia and Kron Gracie use jiu jitsu vs how Ryan Hall does
