Welp… This is what it felt like in my mind as a kid. Sheet music seems to fit perfectly 💕 All I remember while SCRAMBLING for the remote to turn it down was, “I didn’t know a TV could get so loud!”
Fun fact: The creator of this sound was actually inspired by the middle section of the Beatles song “A Day in the Life” when making its score. They equally sound unsettling from the way their volumes and pitches gradually increase.
What's amazing is that anyone that doesn't know to read sheet music could probably instantly know what this piece is just by looking at it without the title.
Y'all really need to hear Haruomi Hosono's "Cochin Moon..." Specifically, the end of this track just at its 2min/10sec mark. Hosono recorded the album at least 5 years before the THX intro made its premiere. ua-cam.com/video/BlwoarINW6U/v-deo.html
The high F# is probably just blending into the overtones of the lower Ds. I actually can hear it, though. It's easier to listen for the highest pitch bend and follow that all the way up to the F#.
notice how Shostakovich creates a similar effect using the 4-voice canon in the 2nd movement of his 4th symphony, Even the final key is the same: ua-cam.com/video/oOy7VZRE87s/v-deo.html
are the "slightly detuned" notes at the top intentionally detuned? I had always assumed it was just because the sound was old and had a slightly "shaky" quality to it as time passed -- kind of like lo-fi samples?
@@jordanwyatt4459 It would create a tension that either never reflect from a tonic not played nor will release this pressure. Much safer to assume that it's not a dominant. But I guess you could defend your dominant theory using psycho-acoustic, like the dominant is released into the movie, something like that... Why not. But the compositeur clearly is saying in the score "eh it's a D major tonic".
@@jordanwyatt4459 We know it's not the V in G major because of the C# in the key signature. If it were the V in G major, we would only have F# in the key signature.
I hated this sound as a kid because the crescendo would scare me badly. Now I get how badass it is.
yes same
same
Yeah it was so freaky. It never scared me, but it was certainly disturbing.
exactly lol
the need to feel the massive ending is just brilliant

Genuenly wondering when Jacob Collier is somehow gonna do this with just vox
he already kinda did in flintstones
@@eleanorsherry4620 I second that
Could not help researching this, looks like the D1, D6 and F#6 are out of his known vocal range but he's nearly there without pitch shifting anything
@@DSteinman It is also half a minute long. That is very long for fff
Nah, he already did this with his right hand fingers alone.
Didn’t realize it was that simple. A *massive* D5 power chord with an F# on top
I dont hear f sharp
Its all the twisty bits at the beginning that make it hard
@@AndreyRubtsovRU maybe it's because all the notes are slightly detuned that's why you cannot hear a clear F#
@@AndreyRubtsovRU Me neither. It does feel slightly major though. Could it be the overtones that generate the F#?

Thanks, I've actually always wanted to see the sheet music for this sound.
I've got to say, it's just as beautiful visually as it is audibly.

There's a rack extension for Reason called Hydronexius. It has a preset for this and I used it to start of my first album xD
What my answer looks like in matching problems
I remember seeing a movie in a theater (maybe in the 90's?), and they actually used this Simpsons clip for the THX logo. It was actually pretty epic.
Fun fact: The creator of this sound was actually inspired by the middle section of the Beatles song “A Day in the Life” when making its score. They equally sound unsettling from the way their volumes and pitches gradually increase.
It's also inspired by Fugue in B Minor by Bach, because of the note being held at the end
THX theme would scare me so much as a kid-
What's amazing is that anyone that doesn't know to read sheet music could probably instantly know what this piece is just by looking at it without the title.
I really needed this video but I never knew it until now. Just 6 octaves of DMaj but only 1 3rd in the whole thing. Brilliant.
This is the first sound I always play on a new pair of headphones or speakers.
Love this intro and sound.
I have a feeling that the last video somewhat inspired this video
Possibly influenced by Xenakis' "Metastaseis"
This sound is a core memory to 90s kids 🥲🥲🥲🥲
its weird seeing "THX" and mezzoforte on the same piece of music but here we are 🤷🏾♂️

I had to turn on all the lights before watching this video. Even as an adult, I find it unsettling.
I miss hearing this before the 20th Century Fox theme on Star Wars movies ☹️

I wanna say I hate this just for how much of a nightmare it looks to be, but I can't.
I'm still terrified of this sound 😅
Dude I love this channle
That would make the PERFECT ending to the backfield warmup by any top twelve DCI brass line!

I don't hear a high F# - if anything there may be be a F# above middle C but I think that's just the overtones.
This sheet music was released by the Composer
It’s hard to hear. I find that if I whistle the note, it pops out
Same. Also I think I can hear only one A. But I always sucked with these! :D

Pretty sure it's intentional
Well, given that it literally says 'slightly detuned' I'd say yes, it was intentional.
Ah, so that's why the THX sound logo sounds so dirty and ugly. Thank you very much for noticing the slightly detuned notes!
inspired by A Day in the Life by the Beatles
How did you know that it was 2 voices per note in the bass and 3 in the upper register?
He didn't, this is the original transcription
