Even when I did recon in the army I carried atleast 7 m4 mags. If you are not SOF with a heavy amount of recourses available to you, you will burn through 3-4 mags in literal minutes and then you are dead.
The worst thing is, it's probably the guy you should be covering who is dying first. That's what I drilled into my team: It's not you who will die when you fuck up your NOD's, or when you run out of ammo. It's the guy next to you who is moving because he trusts it's you who is covering his movement.
Doing recce means most of your time on your belly and looking through optics, especially if on a CTR or manning a COP. I don't know how you guys manage this with chest rigs/front mounted pouches. Back when I was doing this kind of thing, it was belt kit all the way. You can stay prone forever and can move around without dragging pouches on the ground while still having full access to your mags. Ammo was typically 8 mags and a bandolier. We would have a belt fed weapon (LMG or GPMG) and a 40mm on all COPs and recce tasks as we were a small team (typically a 6 man patrol) and so had to be able to fight our way out of a scrap if we were bumped. The main aim if compromised was to get a shit ton of rounds and smoke down quickly and bug out to the ERV as fast as possible, not hang around and duke it out.
Literally wear civilian clothing and keep your head down, act like a civilian. Acting like you aren't aware of your surroundings can help blend in. If in a touristy spot, do touristy things, take photos, admire the architecture or something
I've never been in the military but my gut instinct would be to carry as much ammo as I could while also carrying all the other shit you have to carry in combat. Why the hell would you knowingly go into harms way with only 120 rounds? That just seems foolish. While it may be unlikely--look at some of the famous battles of the last few decades where our most elite forces found themselves ambushed or outnumbered. Somalia '93, Tongo Tongo, Cop Keating in '09, Najaf, Benghazi, etc. You can never really know what you're going into so if you KNOW you're going into a hostile enviornment...carry ammo.
Most definitely 3/4 magazines is dangerous! I have 12 on my web gear and 10 on my belt and I have room for the rest. I have 2 IFAK GP pouches on my pack that carry 5 mags each. I don't have big military supporting me.
You weren't doing recce or DA most likely. Recce isn't meant to be an assault. If you're firing shots on a recce mission things went bad..you wanna be mobile and low signature.
Back when we had 20 rounders we carried minimum of 10 in our ammo pouches ( 1982, still carried the LBE Vietnam style but we were "Highly encouraged to carry extras) compas, map, protractor, C-Rats (MRE's were slowly filtering down to us out in the field) Poncho, socks etc.. And of course the tent shelter halves, PRC 77's, field phones etc.. Yep, Recon sucked but I still would call it the toughest job I ever loved!

I completely agree with you on the Beartooth 💯 all in. With that said how do you stop the tracking of your iPhone or your android. Most enthusiasts will fall out at the base of the hills/mountain with half this gear. You have to be conditioned for it. Starting from a baseline of 2 years already in the Infantry before going to Recon Selection & Assessment, then spending a year in Recon before going to Sniper Section, you were in top physical condition for running fast and long, as well as humping a mission ruck, and doing IADs with and without rucks. It isn't an overnight process of getting fit enough to hump this equipment. It took me years before I got into Recon, and then I was starting over again as a cherry Scout Observer. Had to work hard and be competent to earn the Radio, but we all had to be very proficient on Radios as part of the job. Radios, extra batteries, broken down MREs, water, hide site kit, optics, tripod, yeti net, wet weather gear, hide site shovel, fold-out saw, and extra socks was 85lb easy just for a summer ruck, no fart sack. Winter rucks can get really nasty.
