- In the most rural and forgotten stretches of the Southeastern United States lies an ecosystem that once spanned across 90 million acres. The Longleaf Pine Savannah… this ecosystem holds biodiversity that can be found nowhere else in the world. One of the species being the Eastern Indigo Snake (Drymarchon couperi). In this documentary, the Caveman Wildlife Crew will take you into the world of Longleaf Pine Savannas and Eastern Indigo Snakes along with the Orianne Society and the Orianne Center for Indigo Snake Conservation. These two organizations are doing incredible conservation work to save Longleaf Pine Savannah Ecosystems and Eastern Indigo Snakes. You’ll get to meet some amazing people working at these organizations and the work they do for conservation.

I had an Eastern Indigo snake as a pet when I was a child in the 1960's. Bought it from Bill Haas at the Miami Serpentarium. What a wonderful animal. Very chill, very inquisitive, never bit anyone. I gave him to the Cincinnati Zoo when I went off to college and he ("Shadow") became the star of a local children's zoo program on TV. He was so gentle that kids would be handling him on camera every week.
What a debut! This was absolutely unreal guys, you all absolutely outdid yourselves. Unlike *some* channels that start out on UA-cam with a shoddily filmed, poorly presented video about Canada geese, you guys came out the gate with a masterpiece of a conservation documentary. As usual your passion comes through clearly and abundantly, you guys are all natural on-camera talents and gifted presenters. Seeing Ben and Kevin and so many others people who I recognize was really cool, you really did a good job of highlighting and promoting the people on the front lines of indigo conservation. And I can’t get over those snakes, they’re truly among the most impressive reptiles in the world to me. Amazing work, I can’t say enough great things about this piece!

I don't know man, the people shoddily filming geese often times have the best passion, knowledge, and encouragement to help people like us get started on here. And they also make kick-butt content! These guys are so placid. Tell you what at our previous residence we had them living on our property for almost the entire time we lived there (22 years) because our yard had holes from someone that had buried vehicles there at some time in the past for them to den in. And of course we had plenty of critters for them to eat as well. In those years we never saw even a single tooth. And they got so used to us that they made absolutely no attempt to leave when they saw us but in fact we'd give them some water and they not only approached but actually seemed like they wanted to be picked up so we obliged. They'd curl up on our laps I suppose for warmth and when they got warmed up they'd saunter off on their merry way. One of them had to have weighed at least 25 pounds and he was about 9 feet long. His body was about 4" in diameter and he was just super friendly. What gorgeous snakes and especially in sunlight they have this purplish hue about them. We never made any attempt to cage or contain them. This was in Palm Springs, FL (adjacent to West Palm Beach). Often our Great Granddaughter at the time would come and tell us that one or more was on the front porch and we taught her how to slowly approach them. She'd sit down next to them and they'd crawl all over her. She loved them. She's now 18yo and recently told me she'll never forget that experience every child should be so fortunate.

I seen a video where a Inigo killed a diamondback Rattlesnake the rattlesnake bit it but the indigo was immune to the venom and with its snake bits it bit the rattlesnake and broke the rattlers back and dragged it off to eat it
I am hoping by re-establishing the Indigo population it will take care of the invasive Burmese Python population.

when you say it is the only captive breeding project in the country you are mistaken. I know of many people breeding indigos and cribos.
Yes you are correct! However, the OCIC is the only breeding program in the world where the goal is specifically reintroducing them back to their native environments! Dr. Bogan addresses this during his interview!
