It was truly a joy watching through this series with you! SO many moments that brought me to tears. I know you are already inundated with anime recommendations, but I think you would really enjoy "Ping Pong the Animation." Very different from Haikyuu and Run With the Wind in terms of presentation/art style, but it really gets into the mental aspect of sports which I think you would enjoy. If you want a NON-sports recommendation, "Golden Kamuy" is my favorite show of all time, and I cannot recommend that one enough.

Haiji is becoming the coach of a works team, basically a sports team that's run by a company and whose members are usually employees of said company.
It's implied that Hana likes both twins, sooo maybe they got a poly thing going on behind the scenes?
Now that the series is over, I wanted to talk about the huge implication that Haiji and Kakeru are romantically in love with each other. Shion Miura, the author of the novel the anime is based on, originally intended for Kakeru and Haiji to be lovers in her book, but due to pressure from editors and publishers, she changed this detail into teammates who just highly respect each other. The anime actually brings back elements that she had to cut from her book.
A huge motif in Japanese pop culture is the phrase "Tsuki ga kirei desu ne?" meaning "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?" It's a subtle, poetic way of declaring one's love for another. The motif is so popular that variations have popped up, like saying fireworks or, in Run With the Wind's case, shooting stars are beautiful. Throughout the series, Kakeru is portrayed as being a shooting star, and by the end Kakeru and Haiji see each other as shooting stars. There's also a very direct scene during the camp arc in episode 13 where Haiji asks Kakeru if he has a girlfriend, to which Kakeru replies no and asks why Haiji asked, and Haiji simply replies, "Well, the night sky is just so pretty."
One final change made to the anime is actually the ending. When Kakeru is at the finish line waiting for Haiji and he remembers Haiji asking him what running is; in the novel, he says that he doesn't know the answer and that he'll keep on searching for it. But here in the anime, he states outright that the answer is Haiji. Anyway, I thought those were some neat changes to the anime that brought back some of the original intentions the author had for the book.

Kakeru’s entire journey was about him learning to fall in love with running again. In the previous episode he said he’s in love with running and now he concluded that running is Haiji, so did he also fall in love with Haiji? Up to interpretation, I guess.
The ending is so bittersweet. They didn't win Hakone and Haiji is still limping after 3 years but they beat Tokyo Sport (Sakaki) and pretty much established a new running dynasty for Kansei uni.

  • @VladimirMizich
    @VladimirMizich Рік тому +102

Haiji got offered a position to coach a different team (a different school/academy, a younger team I believe, maybe Highschool like his father?). His ability to build a team was recognized.
Hana is wearing the Kansei uniform in the last scene, so she's attending Kansei university now. This track and field team inspired her to go to that uni.
Also, because Kansei got a top 10 seed at the Hakone Ekiden, the uni administration pumped more money into that field, they got a new facility/building for their track and field team(s) - a bigger one. If you're asking who coaches them now...I'm not sure, but remember they already had a coach, the old guy/grandpa. He probably continues to do it. LOL

Honestly this team was miraculous. The fact they got 10th despite a member having a fever and Haiji having a career-ending injury just shows how much potential we missed out on. Not to mention one of the twins really dropped the ball when they were meant to be one of the faster runners too.

  • @Som3thing2Classy
    @Som3thing2Classy Рік тому +78

Haiji is a madman! He did it! Kurahara set a course record and ran his way into the history books but this episode is all Haiji for me. He fought back from significant injury, did the rehab, and overcame the mental barriers. He pulled together the ultimate team of 10 runners, got them to Hakone Ekiden in a year, and secured their future by 2 seconds to send Tokyo Sport back to the qualifiers. He made Sakaki cry. It cost him any chance of running in the future, there's a noticeable limp after the time skip, but he'd make the same choice 100/100 times. He says it himself - "Even if I fail, I want to do what my heart desires here... Even if I can never run again, I love running!"
This is the other episode that the sound design always jumps out at me. Every time Haiji's knee is the focus of the shot, there's that squeaky, rusty, metallic sound. It's eerie and really ominous, like his knee could go out with every step. The shot of Haiji's father at practice also hits hard. He's not a bad guy. He didn't push Haiji to injury. He gave his son the best advice he couldHe's just stoic, but he does care. Even though he's committed to his role as a coach, he's listening to the coverage. He's watching Haiji run and clutching that stopwatch the same way Haiji did when Prince was qualifying.
It's a perfect episode to end a masterpiece of a series. It even ends on the perfect note:
風が強く吹いている。 - The wind is blowing - Kakeru
逆らうように、走り出す。 - And we defy it by running. -Joji/Jota
その先に、探す答えがあると信じて。 - Believing the answer we seek lies ahead. - Joji/Jota
強さとは? - What is strength? - Niko
走るとは? - What is running? - King
生きるとは? - What is living? - Yuki
すべては、風の向こう側。- It's all beyond the wind. - Musa
希望は僕らの胸の中。 - Hope resides within our hearts. - Shindo
道は、ほら。目の前にある。 - Look. The road is right before your eyes. - Prince
だから今日も走るんだ。 どこまでだって、走るんだ。 - So we run again today. We'll run to the edges of the Earth. - Haiji
なぁ、走るの好きか? - Hey, do you like running? - Kakeru
Kakeru's part 風が強く吹いている。is the literal title of the show.

When I watched the series a second time, I could not help but pick up on things I did not before. Now I think it was at least intentionally left open to interpretation.

Kakeru is the shooting star that streaks through the sky and catch everyone's eyes. Haiji is the Sun (actual star in Astrology) that warms everyone and everyone shines from his radiant light.
At that very moment, Haiji showed everyone what is the meaning of running. This is also leads to another important message by Miura Shion sensei. "Winning" doesn't mean being the "Number 1" (or something like you don't need to be the first to reach the peak, as long as you reach it). As far as I remember, Haiji never told anyone that they could win the race, which was the cause of conflict between him and Kakeru in the earlier days.

I was thought that Haiji choose to run last for a couple releases, yes he wanted to close out the Hakone for himself since it was his dream to run the Hakone. But I also think he choose to run last because IF his leg gave out the team would be out of the competition. Haiji wanted each of his "boys" to run before him so they could achieve their goal and find their own answer to "What is running?" even if later his leg gave out and the team disqualified. The respect Haiji and Kakeru have for each other is top tier.
I love RUn with the Wind all of it's emotional rollercoaster, the layered characters, the beauty OST...I could go on gushing. Even with all the pain, it puts a smile on my face.

This ending had me on the verge of tears again - I'm pretty sure I shed a few the first time I watched, too. The dad secretly listening to the broadcast of his son running is just so satisfying. I can only hope Kakeru's parents would have been proud of him, too.
I'm not sure if you decided with the members yet, but if you're considering what to watch next I recommend Silent Voice. It's an absolutely beautiful movie, both narrative and animation-wise. And since it's a movie, it's not as big of a time investment as a whole show.

The narration at the end has really shaped/put into frame, the way i think about people doing what they love no matter what it is. The whole concept of running in the anime is also a metaphor for that and it can be anything you want it to be. Following what you believe to be important is what's important at the end of the day. Finding the reason to believe in something wholeheartedly and following along the path to make it true, even if we fail,is the reason of living. That's what strength is.Those are the answers to the questions at the end of the episode in my mind. That's the ''love'' that this episode and the previous one refers to.
The last sentence ''hey, do you like running?'' is just the endless cycle of people finding out what they truly want in life. In this case, it was running but it can be applied to all things..Really masterful execution imo and that's why this anime remains in my all time favourites no matter what, because of the message that it portrays.

Hi Sarah, Congrats on finishing Run with the wind (*applause*). This series is also one of my favorite ones that I believe is underrated, It's pretty rare for someone to talk about this anime. But, overall its a great show in its own right which doesn't only focus on the sport itself but also the process on getting where they're at, and I always apreciate your reactions towards their developments and how they finally reached their goal as a team even if it's going to be their first and last at the same time.
I dunno if you are going to be able to read this. But, if you are continuing on the path of anime reactions, sports genre. I think you should also try Welcome to the Ballroom. I don't know if someone suggested this already but it also has the same animation studio as Haikyuu and Run with the Wind. So, you'll also see some similarities in art and animations. As the title suggests, Welcome to the Ballroom is an anime that is also in the sports genre. More like dancesport this time. Hope you can try watching it :).

Kurahara ran in a form that was so pure and structured that it enabled him to have maximum pace and leap.
Haiji wanted to achieve this form in order to run at maximum potential. On seeing Kurahara run this way easily, Haiji was taken aback.
After knowing Kurahara a little more, instead of being jealous Haiji supported him. Haiji is such a pure soul that instead of competing in a competitive sport he competed in the sport by uplifting his runners with him.
Everyone is a better person because of him and he is a better person because of them. Such pure friendships happen rarely. Having people like Haiji in our life might be such a blessing for the people that have him.
The pure compassion, pure strength, pure resolve and pure brotherhood that he possess is a very unique trait and he did not have this mindset inherently but it was sculpted in him due to his injury.
I lost 8 kgs because of Haiji and this anime. I do not have a Haiji in my life yet but I'll strive to overcome the mountains of Hakone in my life still.

Haiji was limping when walking even after three years. His choice was working as a business running team coach and will keep loving to run for the rest of his life. He's a really cool guy.
Hana asked back to Musa “docchi (which one)?” sounded “what do you mean which one?” to me. The word ”docchi?" means which one of the TWO CHOICES in Japanese, so it seems that Hana's wondering why it was one from two choices. In the original novel Hana had more communication with Kakeru as well as the twins, and Kakeru also felt love for Hana. So I think that this anime team inplied the possibility of Hana and Kakeru’s relationship not only with the twin. Anyway, there was no result who Hana selected in the original novel since their story just go on.
I am happy if I could watch “March comes in like a lion” or “Violet Evergarden” with you some day.

This episode is probably the hardest I’ve ever cried for any piece of media. I ran competitively for several years and running remains my favorite thing in the whole world. Every time I got in really good shape I would get injured. I don’t say “really good shape” lightly. With every injury, I learned a new lesson about myself and about how to train smarter. Even so, throughout the seven years that I dedicated to my love, I never got to race at the peak of my fitness. When my team needed me most, I could only watch from the sidelines or race below my capabilities because i was coming off injury. I was still a scoring member of my team, but I felt like such a waste of potential. When Haiji said “whether I run or I don’t, it hurts just the same. Even if I fail, I want to do what my heart desires here,” I lost it.
One of my best friends was on my team, and he was one of the best runners in the state, if not the US. I trained with him for thousands of miles, but I could only watch as he soared to heights that my body couldn’t reach.
So yeah this episode just tied everything together and broke me.
I’m only able to run a few days a week now, otherwise my tendonitis will flare up again. I have built up a lot of strength to compensate, but my body gives out regardless. I still run whenever I can to stay in shape so I can run with him whenever I see him.
Haiji lost hope once, but he was wrong. Running returned in a beautiful form for me as it did for him. I found a group of people in my new city to run with when I can, and I made new lifelong friends through it.
Even if I never run again, I will love running forever.

Especially the comment section is always full of good information.

I whizzed through the series on my own, and I was working on Sarah’s Haikyuu watch videos, and was so happy to see she’d done RWTW so I immediately started watching those videos. I had a great time!
    .
I also personally thought Hana chose both twins.
    .
When looking for more series, I have a brand-new one called “Overtake!” which is kind of about F1 (actually F4) racing, but it ended up being about way more than that. Only 12 episodes! Beautifully animated, and a great story with awesome characters where you love them all!
(But I can also chime in that Yowamushi Pedal is great!)

Another sports anime recommendation thats underrated but has feels and good characters is soccer anime Ao Ashi and I think its done by same production studio who did Haikyu. It only has 1 season of 24 episodes currently so I think it'd be a good watch.

I love this show! It was really fun re-watching it with Sara!🥰
If we're to stay (loosely) with the sports genre, I'd like to recommend the following shows:
    -_Relatively short &/or not finished:_
Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudou-bu (Japanese archery)
    Yuri!!! on Ice (Figure skating)
    Bakuten!! (Rythmics gymnastics)
    Ballroom E Youkoso (Ballroom Dancing)
    Dance Dance Danseur (Ballet Dancing)
    -_Longer Series:_
    Kuroko no Basket (Basketball)
    Free! (swimming)
    Daia no Ace (Baseball)
Chihayafuru (Karuta - a type of card game)

Earlier this week, I rewatched the series because I realised how much I miss it (23 eps is never enough lol), and I did. Compared to my first time watching it, I was more emotionally invested in all the characters and ended up tearing up in more than a few occasions. But, all that wasn't enough. I wanted more and I don't have anyone to talk to about this series that I absolutely love. And so, I ended up stumbling on your channel and your reaction to the series, and I binged watched all of your reaction vids.
The last few episodes made all of us emotional, there's no arguing about it. But there was one moment that hit me way too much that I straight up sobbed for minutes, while keeping this video paused. It was when Haiji was being supported by Kakeru, and the moment when he looked at the whole team, and he had that smile on his face. I honestly don't know why that hit me as much as it did. But I genuinely appreciate this show so much and everything it has offered. The characters are so well-written with nuance and care, and the ending is so heartwarming and satisfying.
I just want to say thank you for sharing your love and enthusiasm for this series. Your insightful and empathetic commentary has really helped me understand the inner workings of athletes in general, and what it means to "run" to everyone in Aotake.

Hey Sarah, Now that RWTW is over, I would like to suggest you another great "sports" anime called "Tsurune Kazemai Kyouko Kyuudo" .
The anime is based on a Japanese martial art, Kyodou which is similar to Archery in some ways. It has a very refined story, excellent character developments and most of all, some of the best animation I have ever seen because it was a a Kyoto Animation Production.
The anime is really underappreciated because not many people like watching something that's similar to Archery. It sounds boring but trust me... it's not.
It currently has two seasons. The 2nd season is named "Tsurune - The linking shot" and both are of 13 episodes.
As a sports anime geek, I think it is a fabulous anime which deserves much more than it gets. Another kind of underrated anime is " Backflip " . It is underrated as the season in which it aired, there were several and I mean several very very popular animes airing which led to it getting outshone. But whatever I said for Tsurune applies here too.
Would appreciate it if you watch one of these next as I love your reactions and RWTW is in my Top 5 anime of all time ( YES I LOVE ITTTTTTT❤️❤️❤️❤️ )

I'm so glad you watched this anime, it didn't get the hype it deserved when it came out! My recs for you are "Keep Your Hands of Eizouken" and "A Place Further than the Universe." They're not sports anime but they're about people finding their passions and growing together. Another criminally underrated show is "Golden Kamuy" but it's a different vibe being that it's a historical drama.

It was a whirlwind of emotions to rewatch this marvelous anime with you. You're amazing, just for being the genuine person you are. Thank You
On the topic of what to watch next:
I'd say that, unfortunately, there's no other sports anime that could give you the same emotions of Haikyuu and Run with the Wind. These are true masterpieces. There are other masterpieces out there, but not in sports anime.
You could maybe say that Clannad has some baseball and some tennis. Definitely a masterpiece the second season: Clannad After Story.
Maybe you could relate shonen academy with sports training, but I can't remember any of those that give you that much emotion.
Anyway, I'm sure that whatever you decide to watch will be definitely good quality.

The next best sports anime is probably Kuroko no Basket, which is FAR less realistic but still has some really great and interesting themes, IMO. Sports anime is kind of downhill from here; still good, but not great. If you want to branch out beyond sports anime, I recommend the first season of The Promised Neverland. NEVER WATCH THE SECOND. The first season is self-contained enough to be satisfying and is short enough not to be a massive commitment.

I’m sure you’re getting a lot of recommendations but if you’re looking for a shorter series, Free! the swimming anime is really fun! The characters are sweet and l’d love to hear what you think of the main character’s journey in season two.
For a longer series, Diamond no Ace (baseball) is incredible. It’s honestly as good as haikyuu in my opinion, they’re my top 2 sports anime of all time. The character development is so earned and I love all the characters

I also think that it was a very beautiful form, starting with Haiji's question and ending with Kakeru's question.
Haiji asks Kakeru a question in Episode 1, and Kakeru answers it in Episode 22. "What does it feel like to be in love? I'm in love too." Kakeru was rough at first, but I think he was able to honestly answer that he likes running now that he has friends.
I am very happy that Sarah enjoyed this story. I recommend Yuri on ice and Kagekishoujo as the next anime for Sara to watch.
