Our family just went through the same process in buying a hybrid. Our hybrid buying experience was very much the same in that we noted almost all of the same benefits/flaws you did (though I, personally, thought that the Prius was more "droney"). The things that swayed us: The main advantages of the Insight: 1. The Insight has a more "luxurious" interior, with real leather, not "leatherette" (what appears to be a "high end" imitation leather on the Prius, so I don't know how durable it will be, long term) on the high end (we also thought that the cloth seats were very slightly nicer). 2. The Insight is quieter. 3. The Insight is quicker, especially in Sport mode. 4. The Insight has Apple Carplay/Android Auto (as of the 2018 model year, the Prius doesn't support either, it is unclear whether the 2019 will have it). Though I have found the interface of Android Auto to be disappointing because you (apparently) can't set up frequently used app icons on the main page like you can with Apple Carplay. Ironic, since Android (arguably) has a more configurable interface than iOS in smart devices. 5. The Insight has a more configurable rear backup camera (three different fields of view (ultra wide, wide, and "just below the bumper") and a blind spot camera for the right side (only, but it should be available for both the right and left sides) that displays whenever the turn signal is on or you press the button on the end of the turn signal stalk. (Note: the "con" of the blind spot camera is that you cannot see the navigation screen at all when making a right hand turn, which causes confusion when you are trying to make the correct right turn with a couple streets in close proximity to each other. I've made more than one wrong turn because of this. Not often a really big deal, unless, for example, one of those streets will take you in the wrong direction, such as a freeway on/off ramp.) The main advantages of the Prius: 1. The gas milage on the Prius is about 2-3 MPG better with the standard models and +5-6MPG better with the Prius Two Eco. 2. The Prius has noticeably more cargo space. 3. We found the seating position a bit higher in the Prius, giving a better view of the road and a higher sit in/get out position, making it easier to get in and out. One feature I wish that both would adopt ASAP is the availability of a HUD. Oh, as you can probably guess, we bought the Insight, even though I used to own a 2009 Prius Touring with real leather seats (totaled because someone ran a red light). Yeah, I REALLY like leather seats! Also, both take a big hit in MPG when the temperature drops below ~50 degrees (about 10-15%, in our experience). This is because both use the engine for heating rather than electric, which forces the engine to run more often to keep the cabin warm. So the colder it is, the more the engine runs and the lower the MPG. There is a lesser hit on MPG over ~80 degrees because both use electricity to drive the AC. Thanks for the great review!

Man if I had the money I would buy the Honda Insight in a heart beat! But what if Honda does a Houdini down the road and offer the Insight as a plug-in hybrid? Hhmm. 🤔
The fugly Clarity needs to die and they need to make this Insight an optional PHEV with a hatch. The "Clarity" was supposed to be a h2 fuel cell anyways.
I went for the insight ex because it is just loaded for its price as compared to a prius or most sedans. Although the Insight does get noisy when trying to get faster speeds or when passing someone on the highway, it isnt that bothering for me. I would love to see Honda add lumbar support though.
For me it would be the Insight hands down. The only reason I would even pause for a second is the Prius's reliability ratings, but I imagine the Honda is close in that department also. I would like to see a comparison between the Insight and the Corolla Hybrid. The only reason I am even considering a Hybrid now is I am not stuck with that horrendous looking Prius as my only option. My next purchase will either be an Insight, Corolla Hybrid, or possibly a non hybrid a Impreza.
When you did the 0-60 in the Prius did you happen to see what level the battery charge was at? I find if the battery is full it’s way faster than when lower. I have the 2017 Prius and love it. Toyota reliability. If I want excitement I’ll hop on my motorcycle. :)
Bryce Porterfield Why it's called "Insight" instead of Civic hybrid: www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2014/02/honda-civic-hybrid-battery-reliability-gets-worse/index.htm Honda has a completely new system here though so hopefully they've fixed all that. Having no transmission automatically eliminates half the problems in their old hybrids and California requires a ten year warranty on the battery.
Before anyone decides on purchase between these two vehicles you might do some research in regard to HV battery construction and battery reliability. We own a 2003 Prius with 226500 miles on the clock. Vehicle still running great. Also own a 2006 Honda Civic which is also a great vehicle. Civic will get 36-38 on highway. The Prius gets about 45-46 highway, but will get 40-43 in town, Civic won't touch that. Remember though, this is the first model Prius. Newer models do much better. Guess we will all see how the new Insight will fair out. My $$$ is on the Prius.
in this case honda is more reliable because prius uses 4.5 kwh battery vs honda 1.1 KWH battery. Guess which one is cheaper to replace after 10 years ?
The Insight V3 has too big an engine. Even with hypermiling & slow 40 speed on the highway, it maxed at 70 MPG. Nowhere near the 90-100 MPG of the original insight
The Insight has better looking than the Prius (it's ugly). The Prius has a better mileage but less power. If the Insight had the same fuel economy than the Prius, it would be perfect, but I still prefer the Insight over the Prius
the Honda looks better, but the Toyota is what I'd buy. Way more simple powertrain design and proven to be extremely reliable - honda's last attempt at a hybrid was a flop
We went with the prius for the space. folding those back seat REALLY gives you a lot of space, and it still gets crazy good fuel economy. We go to the gas station once every month and a half to 2 months. that's insane
Diesel fuel costs 50 cents more than gas, so 40mpg in a diesel is equivalent to 30mpg. Plus with a hybrid, you don't need to replace brakes for like 150,000 miles. Jetta is more fun to drive due to turbo and German suspension. Overall, owner satisfaction with a Prius is higher than any other car, period.
@@danmarjenka6361 where do you live for 50c more per gallon? Here in Canada on average diesel is 10 to 15 cents cheaper per litre and is much more stable in price in comparison to gas.
The lack of the hatchback on the Honda significantly reduces its practicality. I wonder why they did that considering there is a Civic hatchback and the previous Insight was a hatchback. I probably get a Hyundai ioniq hybrid over either of these cars. The Prius has no issue keeping up with traffic flooring it is not the best way to accelerate. 0 to 40 I out run traffic constantly, in my old high mileage 2008 Prius. The 40-65 is where it's slow. But it picks up again over 75 miles per hour. Passing power on the interstate is no problem at all. Just finished a 5200 Mile Road Trip, averaged 42 MPG, traveling over 75 miles per hour most of the time. Closer to 52 miles per gallon in slow City traffic. And my Prius has 237000 miles on it.
i was a big fan of prius and hybrid cars from TOYOTA! but man! that HONDA inside hybrid not only looking 150 times better but its also very good on mpg, more powerful and very reliable car! Honda you dong a great job! i think i know what man next car will be!!!
For hybrids a much more revealing acceleration test is 0-20. Most hybrid drivers will tell you they beat the majority of cars off the line routinely due to the electric low-end instantaneous torque. And of course most driving is not from 0-60. A Prius will beat a WRX off the line strangely enough (but not the average BMW). Additionally, this makes hybrids a good choice for mountain driving as fast torque is necessary. A Prius will go from Denver over both mountain passes to Vail at 75 MPH without a sweat and full of people and gear and still get almost 50 MPG (in power mode).. Been doing it for over 7 years. So the electric car future is here...time to drop the 0-60 test to a more applicable 0-20 test for city driving. Had fun watching your vid, thanks!
The sound of the CVT is horrible, they agree with that. The MPG is expected for both of them. Always great to watch the reviews and comparison of directly rivals. Thumbs up!!!
Neither car has a CVT in the sense that you're thinking. There are some great videos out there about how the Prius (and probably all hybrid) drive train works.
I don’t understand why Toyota designed the Prius to be so ugly. I’m sure they’ve pushed a lot of people away because of the styling. Is Toyota trying to lose business?
I’VE BEEN IN LOVE WITH TOYOTA PRIUS FOR SO LONG, HOWEVER ITS EXTERIOR DESIGN SINCE 2016 IS DAMN UGLY, TOYOTA SHOULD CONSIDER RE DESIGNING PRIUS’S EXTERIOR
I had a Honda CR-Z and it was a looker, but it wasn't earthshattering performance, and it was rather small. Fuel prices in the San Francisco peninsula range from $4 to $4.80 for Premium.
That Insight looks helluva sick! Fuel efficient yet it's crazy fast. Holy cow!!! It looks sooo dope, sounds brutal with a low grumble in Sport mode and is quite fast. Danggg, Insight all the way!!
4:35 I think what you meant here is "it's not that quick. Fast is meant to decribe the speed, quick - the acceleration. "fast car = can move at high speeds" "quick car = high acceleration rate" It's important because regular drivers are not interested in a fast car due to speed limits on regular roads, rather in how quick the car can accelerate. You can say "it accelerates fast" or "it's quick"
The insight is waaaaaay cooler. And the road noise is noticably quieter even just listening to the video I can tell. Would get an Insight in a heartbeat over the Prius.
Toyota just won the 24hrs of LeMans with a hybrid. Hybrids are nice around town and in stop and go traffic. On a highway at constant speed, you're not going to use regen so there is no point to it. On long hills, the battery will go flat and you're left with a small four banger and a heavy lump in the trunk. On a long downhill, the battery will fully charge then again be useless going downhill. You might try testing hybrids on hills; I believe you have some in Colorado.
If you have really big hills or try to go up them at 100km/h then sure, you might use up the battery. But if you watch the little gauge, you can regulate the throttle so that no extra power is being drawn from the battery. At least in the Prius, not sure about the Insight. You'd have more trouble going up extended hills at much slower speeds , since the electric motors are in use more.
I had the lowly 2008 Civic Hybrid.. I lived in AZ and frequented Flagstaff from Phoenix.. I had no problems keeping my speeds at 75mph up the hills - and while the battery would flatten out - the engine was more than enough to keep the speed steady.. I am pretty sure that the newer generation of Honda vehicles can keep up or surpass my experiences..
I have a 2019 Insight the extra power over the prius will help going up. I had no problems in the Adirondack Mts in New York recently, even after the battery was used up. The insight has "paddle shifters" that control the regenerative braking, if you set them to the strongest setting once the battery is full it will begin engine braking, which was nice.
guys nobody cares this much about folding seats in a hybrid car, stop it. I have a gen 2 prius, BEST CAR EVER MADE. All insights have basically failed so far, including the first gen model. I do like this new insight though.
I have had insight for a year now. I love it! Moved from a 2004 V6 Accord (240 hp) so I couldn't deal with much less power than what the Insight has. Prius is also super ugly so I couldn't even consider it anyway.
Waluigi Ross I might be considering buying an Insight but I’m concerned about its power. Since you downgraded from a V6 to a Hybrid engine, what do you think so far? Has it been a good experience?
Joao Lico I won’t lie, it isn’t great at accelerating at higher speeds. But, you do get instant throttle response, which is nice in the city. I don’t mind it too much because I usually drive like a grandma to get the best fuel economy.
I bought my Prius new in 07 and won’t upgrade to a new one because I love mine so much. The new Honda is beautiful but the no-hatchback design is a deal killer. I drive with the rear seats down. It’s been a Prius Pick-up since day one and it’s amazing how much I can load into it. Best car I have ever owned!

@@onthefly1050 Thanks for reporting this! I've been dying to get an Insight, I also drive for a living, need something reliable though and my one fear with the Honda is that it's new, don't know what's liable to break/go wrong for a couple of years when more people start to get to high miles. By all reports though, it sounds like it's been very reliable for you so far. Helps me make my decision :) Of course, I'm already a big fan of the way it looks, inside and out.
@@longclaw99 The only thing i've ever heard of were some people experiencing quirks with the radio which uses an android-based software, but I just recieved a push notification that there is a large update to fix a few quirks in the radio (I haven't experienced them but I will still do the update). If you drive for a living you will LOVE the honda sensing, it half drives itself. I have owned over 28 vehicles so far and this has been hands down my favorite.
@@onthefly1050 I use Android Auto every time I drive, no issues worth mentioning. Before or after that update. Very pleased overall with the EX infotainment system.
Man if I had the money I would buy the Honda Insight in a heart beat! But what if Honda does a Houdini down the road and offer the Insight as a plug-in hybrid? Hhmm. 🤔
Isn't that more or less what the Clarity is?
A. PLUR True since the Clarity has three option for the drive train, however; they cost more than the Insight...I think.
The fugly Clarity needs to die and they need to make this Insight an optional PHEV with a hatch. The "Clarity" was supposed to be a h2 fuel cell anyways.
The Clarity is vastly larger than the Insight.
The Clarity is based on the Accord, the Insight is based on the Civic.
darkpepsi Honda Clarity Plug in Hybrid solves that. If they make the Insight (or Accord) a plug in I bet it wont be until next Generation in 5 years
Which is good for long term reliability?
Data shows Honda has half as many engine breakdowns as Toyota
Does the Prius really beep when it is put into reverse?
Prius because of hatchback design allows for camping mode.
Prius has no room in the trunk, garbage and ugly, I wanna sell it
Hatchbacks were great until someone smashed my $2000 hatch window & stole my stuff. I now prefer solid metal trunks.
What about the ioniq by hyundai
I love the Insight. Very similar to my Civic.
That’s because it is a Civic Hybrid but rebadged as insight
Can I have the Insight with the prius interior?
So what was the honda bottom line & specs?
6:47 you know he felt a strong sense of pride just to say he was 6 feet tall lmao
Thin and slim guys are the "tallest" where it counts most 😉
Happily driving a 2019 Honda Insight EX and getting 57 mpg!
Cheapskate!
Personally I'd prefer the Insight. It drives like a regular car. Looks like a regular car. and it gets decent accelleration.
When you did the 0-60 in the Prius did you happen to see what level the battery charge was at? I find if the battery is full it’s way faster than when lower. I have the 2017 Prius and love it. Toyota reliability. If I want excitement I’ll hop on my motorcycle. :)
todd baker their both reliable? You cant go wrong with either brand being reliable.
Bryce Porterfield Why it's called "Insight" instead of Civic hybrid: www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2014/02/honda-civic-hybrid-battery-reliability-gets-worse/index.htm
Honda has a completely new system here though so hopefully they've fixed all that. Having no transmission automatically eliminates half the problems in their old hybrids and California requires a ten year warranty on the battery.
That's the honda civic hybrid the insight is a completely different car in and of itself look up civic hybrid and look up insight
Looks like Luke Skywalker had a Light Saber battle inside the Insight with Darth Vader and they both exploded.
Hows the cvt in the honda compare to the cvt in the Prius
Honda doesn’t use a CVT. It uses a direct drive from the electric motor to the wheels (or engine to wheels above 45 mph). No gears or shifting
I miss the days when insights got 100+ mpg
Still got my 1st gen
With some hyper-miling skills it is doable as a full hybrid this time
25 mile commute from work, with perfect conditions, and extreme hypermiling, I got 95 MPG , Insight EX
The Insight V3 has too big an engine. Even with hypermiling & slow 40 speed on the highway, it maxed at 70 MPG. Nowhere near the 90-100 MPG of the original insight
What year is the Prius? Why wouldn't you say this or list it in the title of the vehicle?
I mean the new Accord looks ok but that should have been the new Accord
I would buy the Insight
Roman: No one’s gonna race... a hybrid.
Hoovie: Oh look, a nitrous
Ramon Mendoza He forgot NSX, three motors v6 hybrid.
The prius is horrendous, in and out. It may be good, but damn, it looks like a kick in the balls.
The Insight has better looking than the Prius (it's ugly). The Prius has a better mileage but less power. If the Insight had the same fuel economy than the Prius, it would be perfect, but I still prefer the Insight over the Prius
Compromises. There really isn't the perfect car save for some luxury hybrid sports perhaps
Organ white? Most organs I see is wood colored. Or painted and or wood stained.
😂😂😂
Should be.. Orca leather seats
Oregon as I'm the instrument
Thanks! One thought, I recommend making it more clear which car you are talking about at any given time with a graphic.
the Honda looks better, but the Toyota is what I'd buy.
I liked my hatchback until somebody smashed in my $2000 window & stole my stuff. Now I prefer a solid metal trunk
.
Where would the Jetta TDi/Hybrid stack up? like 2015 models.
they could probably be stacked up pretty good at the junk yard.
Skarphéðinn Sæmundsson naw I own a 2013 Jetta hybrid and had not one problem
Diesel fuel costs 50 cents more than gas, so 40mpg in a diesel is equivalent to 30mpg. Plus with a hybrid, you don't need to replace brakes for like 150,000 miles. Jetta is more fun to drive due to turbo and German suspension. Overall, owner satisfaction with a Prius is higher than any other car, period.
@@danmarjenka6361 where do you live for 50c more per gallon? Here in Canada on average diesel is 10 to 15 cents cheaper per litre and is much more stable in price in comparison to gas.
Why would they review discontinued diesel cars that cheated on the US and EU tests? Bullshit and damn VW’s dishonest engineers
Hatchbacks were great until someone smashed my $2000 hatch window & stole my stuff. I now prefer solid metal trunks.
But with honda we drive more with electric... Right? More electric more confortable ?
i was a big fan of prius and hybrid cars from TOYOTA!
but man! that HONDA inside hybrid not only looking 150 times better
but its also very good on mpg, more powerful and very reliable car!
Honda you dong a great job!
i think i know what man next car will be!!!
The Honda has rattle sound interior?
My civic already gets a minimum of 35 upwards of 40. So im assuming the insight will get very good mpg.
Honda fan bo is here😎
insight is LEGEND
Toyota is still keeping with the suppository design theme.
I use 0-60 every day to accelerate onto the onramp of interstates. It is still very applicable
They should do a hellcat vs Prius mashup
I don’t understand why Toyota designed the Prius to be so ugly. I’m sure they’ve pushed a lot of people away because of the styling. Is Toyota trying to lose business?
The video is very confusing. When are you talking about which car?
What about Hyundai Ionic?
I’VE BEEN IN LOVE WITH TOYOTA PRIUS FOR SO LONG, HOWEVER ITS EXTERIOR DESIGN SINCE 2016 IS DAMN UGLY, TOYOTA SHOULD CONSIDER RE DESIGNING PRIUS’S EXTERIOR
Prius quality of materials? Its unpainted shiny hard plastic! How is that quality?
Oh snap, Father son duo. #mindblown
I had a Honda CR-Z and it was a looker, but it wasn't earthshattering performance, and it was rather small. Fuel prices in the San Francisco peninsula range from $4 to $4.80 for Premium.
I liked my hatchback until somebody smashed in my $2000 window & stole my stuff. Now I prefer a solid metal trunk
.
When Insight looks better than Accord..😲
Please someone compare Ioniq and insight. I can’t decide which to buy.
"fast car = can move at high speeds" "quick car = high acceleration rate"
It's important because regular drivers are not interested in a fast car due to speed limits on regular roads, rather in how quick the car can accelerate.
You can say "it accelerates fast" or "it's quick"
Yep, I noticed that too.
The insight is waaaaaay cooler. And the road noise is noticably quieter even just listening to the video I can tell. Would get an Insight in a heartbeat over the Prius.
For LA traffic you do not need more horsepower so prius is perfectly fine to stand still.
For LA traffic you need to speed up at the drop of a dime to get into lanes because LA drivers are assholes and won't let you in.
Which makes hybrids perfect….. the electric motor gives max power from a standing start. (Engines don’t.)
The west coast of the US has many high speed climbs. 100+Km/h 1 to 2 km climbs. Your choice is often following a truck or blocking an escalade.
@@onthefly1050 Thanks.
Since I can get on the carpool lane I would get the insight because of the styling
Really? In California hybrids were banned from the carpool lane (unless they can be plugged-in).
The Prius looks like a Catfish
The Insight looks like an Automobile
guys nobody cares this much about folding seats in a hybrid car, stop it. I have a gen 2 prius, BEST CAR EVER MADE. All insights have basically failed so far, including the first gen model. I do like this new insight though.
So did you put the Prius in sport mode before you timed it?
I wonder if they even know.. my 2012 AWD-e Prius also has Econo, Normal and a "Power-Mode"
They both are great cars. You can't go wrong with either. Unless you plan for a Tesla, they both are just fine.
@@Queen_Popsicle thank you for replying. In theory I believe I’ll like the Insight. I might have to test drive it.
How much to replace the batteries?
$2500 at the dealer. $1500 from an independent. $1000 for used battery.
We had a 2008 Prius, then a 2015. But Toyota drive us away with the new design. We now have a Honda Clarity which we really like.
Hatchbacks were great until someone smashed my $2000 hatch window & stole my stuff. I now prefer solid metal trunks.
Do the transmissions still self destruct in the insights?
9:30 Hershey's milk chocolate is less than 30% cocao solids. It's mostly sugar and cocoa butter.
what is that house track playing at 9:50?
They know they hating cause the Prius is no longer the best hybrid car in the market the insight makes me wanting to go buy one very bad and desperately
Ummm… the 4 gen Pruis always looked ugly. 3 gen was fine though.
I'll stick with my first gen Insight.
You can tell that the young guy is a total prius fanboy
Honda got it this time
Why would you say such an absurd thing! Tommy you can never pick a prius. You have to pick anything even walking over a prius every time
