- Jonas Rask and Palle Schultz went to Iceland in April 2017 to test the Fujinon GF23mm F/4 medium format wide angle lens on the Fujifilm GFX50s medium format camera. Accompanied by Jeff and Henrik Ravn they all went into the diverse landscapes of Iceland, exploring both the GFX and the incredible nature of Iceland.

Jonas Rask and Palle Schultz are both Fujifilm X-Photographers which means that they are Fujifilm Ambassadors.
Being an X-photographer is not a payed assignment. X-Photographers are providing Fujifilm with feedback during product development and testing.
Fujifilm X-Photographers are encouraged to use other brands as well. In the case of Jonas Rask and Palle Schultz, both are using a variety of brands, both for digital and analog photography.

And of course the magnificent Iceland. Well worth the visit, no matter the weather.
Still one of the best GFX videos, the best Iceland photography videos, the best photo & music videos out there. Just beautiful.
Palle, every video you release is damn brilliant. Congratulations to everyone involved in this project. This music was amazing, the scenery - amazing. The pictures weren't bad either :) Fuji's X-Photographers are doing God's work.
Palle, release your bloody album already. Jonas, release your bloody photography book already.
Greetings from Australia
Thanks Jon :) All in good time.
hahahaha. As Palle said. All in due time :D - Thank you man!
Both the videography and the photography shown in this video are just absolutely amazing. Thank you for sharing!
Just watched this again- been a while. I wish you’d do more of these Palle, and Jonas. Bloody amazing. In fact, come to Scotland and do one. Ill come with you!
That would be awesome :)
Hi Palle and to all guys involved in video editing, scenery, music followed by such a beautiful voice.
You did a great job guys. I just stood for these 13 min. There's no limit to perfection and you proved it!
Thank you Guys, keep doing it. =]
(from Russia with Love).
Brilliantly shot video with striking sound on breathtaking land... I admire your work Palle!
Gorgeous photographs! A credit to the photographer, and the camera. I also have a desire to visit Iceland now! It feels so raw and elemental, almost alien.
Thank you Lewis :)
OMFG! This is the best channel I've found this year!
35 seconds in and I'm pretty sure I'm hitting subscribe at the end of this!
same
Superb images and video ! That is some solid work, man. Thank you very much for these 15 min, I can't wait to visit Iceland soon...
Love this - I spent a month in Iceland dreaming of getting great photos but got my ass kicked attempting to cycle around!! Something in the experience of being there stayed with me though, I loved my trip and would love to return some day. Great video, thanks for sharing.
PS I really chuckled at the start. That slip on the rock with the record scratch!! Nice bit of levity there, good fun :)
Stunning images!!! Really enjoyed the whole video!!! Love your work, as always
Rask and Schultz, what a great combo ;-) Great shots and story telling 👌🏻
Love the song. Thanks :)
Dynamic range, colors and sharpness look like an X-T2 on steroids! Best regards from Svendborg
Fantastic!
9:55
insane shot!
NLFilms Thank you.
Insane video! Great work!!
Beyond words. Amazingly beautiful. Jonas & Palle you made the first place in my personal gfx stories ranking. ☺️ Ps: the sound track is pure dope
My soul to vibrate guys!!!!
I like videos like this, longer form, out in the field.
Absolutely stunning.
Amazing shots, beautiful music (just tried to buy it on iTunes but not found). I am hiring the GFX for a trip to the west coast of Ireland in a few days time. So excited. Your trip to Iceland has inspired me massively. Thank you.
I will be honest, I dont subscribe to many channels or leave reviews, however, you deserve both Sir! From the film aboit Nepal to here ! I have been inpressed humbled and inspired by your work, attention to details and how you present your content !! Bravo!!! This is simply breathtaking in every second! Bloody amazing result from you both and a massive inspiration. Jonas, the mood in your shots is killing me. Palle - the video, color grade and music are out of this world, as usual. You guys have been gifted with talent to the roof! Wanna join you some day for such a trip!
Amazing fantastic great informative video 🙏🏻
Excellent images and great video Palle. Now I just gotta find $10k dollars sitting around so I can go buy a GFX. ..
The curse of G.A.S
Hands Down! Det er en lækker film, billeder og lyd!
INSANE IM ABOUT TO BUY THE 23 NOW IM SOLD
Some wonderful photos - thanks for sharing :)
What a great journey, thank you for taking us with you thru your lense. I would have loved to see the ISO - Aperture and shutter speed as a title with each picture. I shall definitely subscribe .. GOOD LUCK
Lindos videos.Felicitaciones.
stellar work, thank you!
A little confused by what you're saying with regard to the 23mm not “skewing” the image as much as the equivalent in full frame or aps-c. In my experience shooting small, medium and large format the perspective distortion of equivalent focal lengths is identical between formats. a rectilinear wide (like this 23) will have more corner stretch due to complex distortion than a biogon symmetrical design but that's about it.
F/32 on a 5um pixel pitch sensor will be soft as well, at high reproduction ratios.
Daniel Kennedy have you used this lens ?
You're right, they're trying to sell the lens/ system. At the end it's all marketing.
This video makes me wanna buy a GFX 50R!
superb video and photography
Love the music background
Very nice video! Great work Palle!👍🏻
Looks awesome. I really like the shot at 8:35 but lots of great scenics.
Stunning! Makes me want to go to Iceland even more and buy a GFX... (nah, can't afford the last one, will stick to my X-T20 :))
What picture you did with the GFX that you couldn't have done with a FF (a D850 for example) ?
What photo you've shot with any camera, couldn't have been done with an iPhone?
Sorry for saying, but your question is very ignorant. Pro photographers know very well that the quality from a medium format camera is on another level, than anything else.
Súper cool video congrats greatings from México
insanely great pictures, great composition 👍😀
Harry Chen Thank you man!
impressive video! Well captured and edited
Loved the guitar solo at 10:51 \m/ \m/
Excellent! I enjoyed the film.
Fantastic stuff!!
Came back to watch for the 15th time. In fact, this video made me pull the trigger buying a camera again. A dear hobby I grew up with, but had lost for several years due to my camera being stolen. Feels like I got a bit of my soul back again. Thanks so much for your work. Love, Mink
That music change halfway through was too abrupt. I was 100% loving the quiet, austere mood of the first half. Anyway, fantastic video and photos. I wish I could have a chance to shoot medium format!
You are very talented. Nice work!
Shows that you can do great video work with the X-T2
So, what's your consensus after using the GFX? Do you own it? Is it going to be a major part of your work flow or not so much?
Awesomw video and pictures guys ;-)
Perfect video THX
Incredible guys.
this palle thing is so good.
Hi Palle Schultz, great video. Which camera are you using to film this? The skin tones and exposure are so amazing!
It actually says so at the end ;) I used the X-T2 and the X-T20 :)
Typical Palle Schultz grading. Amazing
Thanks. Its really nice!
magnificent
Great work by the both of you! The grading is subtle and beautiful. This made me suscribe and is also making me buy into the X-T2 and move completely to the Fujifilm system. I have a question though. I haven't seen many samples of the slow-motion capabilities of the X-T2 or at least none that look good, how does it look, is it useable? I ask because I use a lot of slow-motion in my videos and my line of work.
Hi Steven
in 4K UHD, more compact systems like the X-T2 have a maximum of 30fps and 60fps in FullHD. Så you will have to rely more or less on software SloMo and the highest FR you can push the X-T2 to.
Smaller sensor mirrorless cameras can reach a maximum of 60FPS at 4K resolution. Some very expensive pro video systems kan deliver 60P at 4K.
Thank you for the reply. I don't mind using it at 60fps as long as it looks similar to something produced in a DSLR at full hd. Anyways I just bought it! Hopefully it gets here on time for my trip to Haiti. Keep up the great work!
Awesome video. Have you noticed the circular effects at 5:30 below dead center? Something wrong with the lens? Can't be a coincidence.
Thats just the way the shade folds Klaus.
Great music Palle, good video
superb images
Palle, great photography! 7:35 I really would love to see this place in Iceland. where is it? how could i miss it
the song is amazing.
Thanks Alexandre :)
That's what I would call professional work :) Thank you. Now I am in hesitation between this lens and 32-64 zoom for my candids. Getting both is unreasonably expensive especially since my local currency exchange rate has doubled since 2014. I love wide angle, and this lens shows none to very little distortion. You can also see how damn sharp it is. Amazing.
amazing
Great video and shots. are the photos online to view anywhere?

Awesome......
SO COOL
Hello Palle, I love Iceland, Fujifilm, and even more the sound design of the video, especially the part sung by Line who has a magical voice, congratulations on this wonderful video. Question, where could I get the musical piece sung by Line? Thanks, I subscribed to your channel for the occasion. cordially
The song has never been released. But I'm working on a partially recalibration of my musical career, but aren't there just yet.
@@PalleSchultz Thank you Palle
Super fed film Palle (y)
11:29 I would be like......"To the Hotel! Where's my blanket?"
Jävligt snyggt (ursäkta språket)
Damn nice
Was the X-T2 used at 0:20 - 1:03? What picture profile and lens was used for this? This was absolutely gorgeous!
X-T2 + 24mm T1.5 SamYang Cinelens. Classic Chrome.
Pretty Nice! Which kind of adapter do you use?
it's with a fuji mount
Even better!
Great. Filmed with xt2 I presume?
Yes and the X-T20 as well.
great job love it screen by screen ...supercool
Need a new set of eye balls after watching this... 'cause the pair that just witnessed this master piece deserve to be bronzed and shelved.
Thanks Andre :)
all those classic spots and not one tourist in the shot ! himmmmmmmmmmm ............
Timing and framing :)
fair one , i was there in February gone only got a few decent shots the rest was spoiled by tourists
i was there in july at high season for tourists and got awesome shots at all locations by using timing and framing, at some places also helped that sunrise was 03 in the night when tourists sleep :D
Are those super wide pictures Cinematic ratios of 2.33:1? They'd be lovely for me to buy and hang up!
Palle, do you have a store?
Great video. I love the music - any chance you are going to release it as an online purchase?
The last song, is from a music project i'm working on, where we will release the music at some point. But it is very time consuming and we don't have much of it these days.
Was the video itself shot on the GFX as well ?
It was shot on the X-T2 and the X-T20
So in terms of depth of field,
is f/4 on the GFX equivalent to f/2.8 on full-frame ? Or some lower f-stop (than f/4?)
thanks!
Beautiful video and photos by the way!
Because of the bigger sensor, you can get closer with tele lenses with the same framing as a FF sensor, so the dof is narrower because of the lesser distance and can therefore be of a higher number. What that number is exactly I don't know.
@@PalleSchultz f/4 on this pseudo-medium format sensor is equivalent to f/3.16 on full frame.
@@ChangeOrBeCrushed If you compare to 6x6 analog film, then I guess "pseudo" is a term you can use for ALL digital sensors.
@@PalleSchultz ok, i should correct my terminology. it's a "crop medium format sensor" while the phase one sensor is considered as "full frame medium format sensor" in digital photography. the crop medium format sensor offers only 2/3 stop of an advantage over a 35mm full frame sensor. and there is no glass faster than f/2.8 (except for 110mm f/2) for the crop medium format. hence, instead of the very poorly spec'd gfx bodies, i suggest Jason to go for a 35mm full frame system which is the sweet spot for image quality + fast glass.
ChangeOrBeCrushed Have you shot with the GFX?
12:00 Is this 23mm? It looks like something longer.
Yeah thats actually the 110mm f/2
Any news on Gfx50s getting 4k upgrade?? like pro-2 in future. It would be awesome addition to rule out competition
I don't know,. And I don't know if the sensor is fast enough to deliver the data fast enough to the processor in the GFX, to be able to record 4K
The best!!!!
Do you still edit these videos like putting some filters? or was that the camera effects?
My base is Classic Chrome, with some adjustment to the highlights and shadows and some tinkering with the white balance. That makes the base for color grading that I do in color finale pro. This one didn't need much.
Hi ! What was this filmed on?
Fujifilm X-T2
calling airport right now ,,,lol nice shots ....
Beautiful. What camera was the video shot with?
The Fujifilm X-T2 and the Fujifilm X-T20
Great work Palle. Lovely stuff
Thanks Sean
You are genius
Hm I wonder is there any difference between this lens and 12mm for the X-T2 or 18mm for full frame like you said in the video. I really do not see it.
There is. I conducted some testing for Fujifilm internally. It really doesn't distort the way a 12mm on APS-C would :)
Please show us in a separate video or blog. I am curious. For example the Samyang 12 2.0 on Fuji APS-C, CZ Batis 18 2.8 on A7rII and GFX with 23 4.0... this will be a real thing for landscape photographers for example or street photogs...
@@jonas_rask because it's corrected in the jpgs or in the raw if you use it in capture one.
Hej Palle. Fede billeder, god ide, måske lidt overdramatisk musik til en start. Mange hilsener fra Bo.
Nice shots of Iceland! I just posted a cinematic Iceland video on my channel!
The photos are amazing! Unfortunately the music doesnt match the mood of this film and the photos at all.
Do you have like a recipe for when music matches content? Or is it just your taste, that got violated in this video?
so the purple sky with the mountain shot was obviously an edit? you dont go from bright purple sky to dark grey sky in the same timeframe
All stills are edited. None of the pics are straight out of camera.
thats beyond editing... you changed the entire color of the sky completely. from grey to bright purple? why not work solely in CGI lol
If you watched the video carefully, you will know that I did the video filming and a few shots, while the vast majority of the pictures where shot by X-Photogrpaher Jonas Rask, who happened to make the artistic choice to render the sky purple in that one picture. And for your info, the whole video is color graded as well. I urge you to go to Iceland and take some pictures and post them here on YT or let go of the weird commenting. It makes no logical sense.
That's called artistic freedom!
Hi! I am a traveling environmental science teacher visiting Iceland as part of a Nat Geo fellowship and as I am exploring, I keep coming across images of the waterfall at 7:35 and 10:40 in the video. It is gorgeous and has sort of become my goal to find, with no luck so far as to even coming close to its location. Would you be able to help? I can always message you via email if need be as to not post it on here. Would be so grateful for any help. Thank you.
If you stand in front of Skógafoss, or Skógafoss Hotel, it is about 1 kilometer to the left of it. It is sort of hidden, and you have to walk a bit. Follow the stream into the ravine and at the very end of it, you'll find the waterfall at 7:35
Awesome. THANK YOU so so much. I was there yesterday and will be back next week. I can't wait to share my find- I'm shooting medium format film with a Rolleiflex TLR!
nice
I should clarify.... I got left and right messed up. If you look at the waterfall it is about 1 kilometer to the RIGHT! Not left. Sorry bout the confusion on my part.
9:55 stunning
