Alvvays writes such beautiful guitar melodies packaged into a fast pop format. Layered over them are her moody lyrics which really make the songs work. It's introspective. Every song takes me back to the chill night in Cleveland when I was introduced to Alvvays on their first tour. And bought the disk from Molly's brother.
A cassette recorder with many songs in progress was stolen from Molly and Alec’s Toronto apartment. Many melodies and song ideas for the Blue Rev album were memorized by Molly. Basically, the band took these new songs and worked on Blue Rev anyway, with Molly reproducing everything from memory . This gives you some indication of their musical talent and Molly’s excellent memory for melody.
it's staggering how good this band is. great feature - thanks for putting it together, teaching me a few new things, and sharing your feelings on the band. we are lucky to have them!
you did a great job! i don't think people realize the Rankin family are an iconic musical fixture in Nova Scotian and Canadian culture. they are not just a band who had some international success in the 90s. they demonstrate so much maritime history in their music, that can really be quite dark at times. particularly discussion of the mines in Cape Breton, fishing culture, the island's tumultuous winters, poverty, it's historically a very musical place. the traditionally Celtic sounding music from that region is rich with history and you can really hear it all over Alvvays' records, in the melodies, Molly's voice and the instrumentation. it's really quite remarkable and haunting. i think this is what makes them authentic, they are true to their roots and it's a rare quality for bands to encompass nowadays.
I saw Kiwi Jr. a few months ago and talked to Brian afterwards. There was not a clear reason why he left Alvvays. He only said it was a job and after 7 years of Alvvays it was time for another project. I can assure there is no ill will between him and the rest of the Alvvays band. They are in fact a bunch of very good friends. Jeremy (singer of Kiwi Jr) actually got credits as a guitar player on the Alvvays Antisocialites album, so yeah, they are one big family of friends, I guess.
They are headed to Austin on April 28th. I just saw them this past Thursday in Cleveland. Definitely one of my most favorite concerts I've attended to date.
First heard them when I found out that they were opening for The Decemberists in 2015. I fell in love with their songs and loved them at the show. I've seen them live twice since then. Party Police was what really hooked me.
Great video - I was at the Chicago show at the Riviera - there's a short clip from that show in the video here. It was a fantastic performance. "Not My Baby" and "After the Earthquake" were transcendent.
Have loved ALVVAYS for yeah, like 7 years and finally got to see them. I also think Greta Kline (Frankie Cosmos) is genius and so underappreciated. Has stood the test of time with me and love more with every listen.
Abbey’s leaving the band to pursue her own solo music. Wishing her the best of luck, and i wonder who will take the place or sub when they come back this December
Thanks for the overview. Really well done video. I'd never heard of this band until last week. And will be seeing them come through Edmonton in a few weeks. As it turns out they are big Morrissey & Smith fans. Not surprising...so am I. Instantly loved her voice and their sort of surf rock jangle angle. dynamics of the band. Can't wait for their concert. Cheers from Edmonton, Canada.
Hey, you missed the fact that Molly worked at my juice bar in Kensington Market before she moved on to the pizza restaurant. (I know, I know, you can’t include every detail)
thx for this info, ive just got into this band and have been taken over by them, i mean ive yet to listen to their first two albums but i cant stop listening to blue rev...i'll check out your other content
I've discovered the band through a Cringe Compilation video where a fan invaded the stage and tried to kiss Molly while they were performing Party Police, been a fan since.
I think another Northern America band Innocence Mission are a big influence on this band. The former have released some of the greatest melodic pop /folk music I have ever heard eg Someday coming , the lakes of Canada etc.
“Velocity Girl BY Primal Scream” or “Velocity Girl AND Primal Scream”? I hear a lot of Velocity Girl in their music. Coincidentally, I think Velocity Girl had a member named Archie.
they don't use Instagram/twitter, they are mysterious and they appear with a great album out of nowhere every 4 or 5 years. i love those guys
they are on Instagram and Twitter promoting their new release

So, you're telling me that recalling the songs you wrote and performed is some sort of talent?
Low bar.

If you like these listen to fellow Canadian band and imo a huge influence eg "The Lakes of Canada ", "Someday Coming "

Thank you for your awesome documentary. AVVAYS has been a band in my bucket list I’d love to see. Please come to Texas Alvvays.

Dreams Tonite is a song I can't get over ever
The Toronto basement flood didn't ruin their equipment, Molly said she and her friends managed to save all the equipment and none of it was damaged
Oh interesting, thanks :)

One of my favourite bands. ❤️🎶
Great video! Nice to see someone talking about Alvvays 🙌
Why they aren't bigger than U2, I'll never know.

I was there too! Such a great performance
Every new Alvvays album is better than the last one

Yes
Just discovered this wonderful group recently. WOW! Have I missed out on some fantastic music. Molly is the perfect antidote to Taylor Swift.
Listen to Innocence Mission eg "The Lakes of Canada ", "Someday coming" , a huge influence on this band . They are Canadian too !

We need another concert here in Argentina. What a band
Molly and Kerri probably know MrMan50, georgiarose, HAZED and gemarcher83. If they spent enough time on UA-cam, that is.
“Velocity Girl BY Primal Scream” or “Velocity Girl AND Primal Scream”? I hear a lot of Velocity Girl in their music. Coincidentally, I think Velocity Girl had a member named Archie.
What band did you mention you listened to in your younger teens at 12:40? Yisaya? Want to check them out
Yeasayer :)
7:45 is an extremely strange sentence. What does that even mean?
حبيت thanks 🫶😽
unfortunately i do not love the third album as much as the first two...
I feel the same but I love easy on... and belinda... so much that is enough for me😂
Yup..the first album is my favourite..it is my personal classic all time great album.
