You can’t have a conversation about dream pop without mentioning Beach House. In the decade and a half since their debut, the band out of Baltimore have dominated discussions around the genre and have basically become synonymous with the term. You can even see their influence visualised by Google, in which the phrase "dream pop" receives spikes in popularity whenever Beach House release an album. There has been no dream pop act this side of the millenium who have made an impact quite like Beach House, so much so that they have come to re-define the very genre itself. Let’s take a closer look and discover How Beach House Changed Dream Pop.

beach house’s music has this special touch of familiar loneliness. An unexplainable sadness. The kind that lingers but never harms. That has been my biggest comfort ever.
It's amazing how music can just take you to place of happiness in the form of memories.
Yes! It's a mix of comfort with melancholy and some nostalgia
I love this comment so much
Love how you described it
Well said
Myth is seriously one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.
me too
PPP . days of candy
Agreed. Myth is so beautiful it makes me cry. Sometimes it's almost too hard to listen to because it makes me very emotional.
one of my fave songs for album opener
Same bro
Depression Cherry is a masterpiece of an album. I think it will stay relevant for decades.
Levitation one of the best intros oat
Perfect album front to back.
Never gets old.
Agreed
That album defined my early 20's
I swear this man makes a video about every artist I like
Indeed!
Impecable taste
FORREAL
Im sayin
Same. He's got very good taste.
We gotta listen to music together one of these days
Yes, please
When's the middle ocho listening party?
@@goncalomatos871 xD
Let's do it
We all do!
I can't stop listening to Beach House at this point.
They're so consistent, it's insane
they're definitely going to be in my top 5 artists of the year, they're sogooooood and I've been listening to devotion, teen dream and bloom on repeat since January
Same and I'm just getting started (again) with Teen Dream. Thank Your Lucky Stars is up next!
SAME
me, but replace Beach House with MBV & Slowdive
Space Song makes me feel that nostalgia sad feeling since the first note
Bloom is such a perfect album. Even hearing just the opening notes of Myth send me to a place I can't put into words. No filler on that album at all (except for that massive silence after Irene :p )
The silence is because of the hidden track at the end. Quite a few M83 albums have this as well. I still don't really get why they include the silence on streaming services.
It would be perfect without the silence
@@TheDutchCreeperTDC yeah, of course I know that. I'm just saying it just goes on for too long. 13 minutes if I remember correctly? Just keep it to a couple of minutes, it's fine
Troublemaker does that to me, too 😍 perfect álbum
@@HectorTWE yeah it's awful when you're listening to a playlist and you have to listen to 13 minutes of silence while you're doing something and can't reach your phone like driving for example. And it bothers me even more because Irene is one of my favourite songs on the album but because of this I barely ever listen to it.
beach house has a almost if not completely perfect discography
Yes
Its true lol. I'm happy listening to any song from any of their albums.
agreed
They’re great but no, a lot of fillers in their albums
@@fufuman27 😔
Beach House is the perfect band for introspection and the purifying of soul through song. The cozy intertwining of dark organs and shimmering guitars, the incomparable expressive force of Victoria's vocals, the wistful and melancholic melodic lines, the adventurous use of harmony and counterpoint, the lush and heavy production, the slow funereal pulse of the drum machines and those lyrics evocative of the profoundest affection and heartbreak; and yet the entire experience is much more than a sum of all the parts. This musical pairing was truly a blessing for us all.
Teen Dream just kills me with that, and I know so many others do as well.
its not that deep
yep, such an unique band
@@VGBNDGRL I agree Anna, I like Beach House but I do find the music a little soulless at times, it's like euphoria by numbers almost everything is framed right the lyrics are sufficiently cool but the warmth and the heat and dark.....are missing.
@@VGBNDGRL What is deep for you?
My mind says Teen Dream but my heart says Depression Cherry.
THIIIIIIIS
7 for me personally..they’re all amazing but that album is perfect from front to back
My heart, body, and soul says Teen Dream
oh yeah!
Depression Cherry is a good album, I am just a bit irked that a lot of fans seem to overrate it :-) it is a perfectly fine album. but better than Teen Dream, 7, Devotion or Bloom? I say nope.
Man does Take Care destroy me every time I hear it
Yeah, I remember my introduction to beach house through that song being used in an episode of new girl where a character is thought to have cancer and it's the most beautiful outer ever to an episode in tv
Yeah drake killed that fr
Same :( it reminds me so much of 5 years ago
@@mrsynth2643 omg same i got into beach house because of new girl too lol
@@marciafrancisca8356 yeah good show good band

Or mdma and opioids
They were also sampled by The Weekend on his House of Balloon tape and Kendrick on Money Trees from GKMC.
Yup, Weeknd put me on to them
Woooow I didn’t know that !
The beat for Money Trees is basically Silver Soul backwards, its amazing.
what!!

Bluebird is the most underrated song from depression cherry and my favorite, it takes me to another world.
I would not ever try to catch youuu
@@skyferrari where are you gonna go now? :(
It truly is! ❤️❤️❤️
That and beyond love
Bluebird is my fav on DC. So good.
Beach house is the perfect interlude between indifference and breaking into a quiet sob
Space song is the closest thing to heaven I’ve heard in a while
imo PPP is better
@@MoKabary pp
@@MoKabary x2
Honestly, there's a comment on UA-cam that somebody wrote on the Space video where their brother had passed away and this song felt like they were closer to their sibling. It was beautiful ❤️
Listening to PPP is like a religious experience. The whole song seems like its slowly reaching out to your soul and grabbing it. By the end of the 6-minute song you eventually feel your soul leave your body and move to a higher state of being.
You could say that for so many of of their songs tbh. Their consistency is unreal.
thats one way of putting it
that transition from myth to space song at 00:14 is one of the many reasons why i love your channel :)
yeah no one seems to be talking about it
Beach House has continuously evolved, while remaining true to themselves, that's their main quality. They make small adjustments each time, yet their sound and songs are all very distinct of one another.
I discovered them early on, and it was unlike anything I had heard before. The mix of hopefullness and melancholy, a bittersweet sensation, perfect for a cozy autumn afternoon, or late at night.
I will always have a special thing for their debut and Devotion, and I secretly hope they make something reminiscent of their early days one more time, but I'm equally excited for the soundscapes they created for Marin's Dream. They are simply the gift that keeps on giving.
fuck every time a song snippet played i got full body chills... bh is legendary
“Why settle for only being the best at one thing and never exploring anything else?” Coldplay could give you a reason or 2 for what happens when you stray too far out of your lane
that purely depends on your preferences tho. I've never listened to much Coldplay when they did britpop and I like a lot of their newer pop stuff. Viva la Vida, Lovers in Japan, Lost, Strawberry Swing, Paradise, Charlie Brown, Sky Full of Stars or lately Champion of the World and the very interesting Arabesque I've all had on repeat!
@@charliez077 Good point, I actually agree. I just mean they practically owned the charts in the first half of the 2000s. Creative, risk-taking, explored some other styles, and their popular success evaporated. Might’ve happened anyway, just noticing
The idea that you are only interesting if you make radical change in your music/art is overrated. Any musician, visual artist, writer, film maker knows how hard it is to create something of value. If a radical change in your work comes from a genuine inspiration then that's great. But changing for the sake of change alone can be shallow.
Good art/music is often the artist digging deeper into the thing that is their muse or core interest.
@@charliez077 Your taste in music is terrible, it seems. Their recent stuff are horrible, abomination and reprehensible. If betraying your fan base was a crime Chris Martin should be in life imprisonment.
@@fugitive6549 aww
Teen Dream is my personal favourite. What a gorgeous album.
literally a 10/10
It's insanely gorgeous, ohh my goodness. I get chills more and more. Love listening to it on vinyl...Lover Is Mine is just perfect. But they all pretty much are, but that one.
It’s so good, but my favorite would probably be Bloom
Bloom is my wake-up album, while Teen Dream is my evening walk album.
Depression Cherry is my go-to album while depressed.
I love how they said "ethereal, whatever that means" as if ethereal doesn't have a definition 😂
"extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world."
You're right, I take it back. Beach House is pretty ethereal.
@@Middle8 I love your videos! Thank you for responding 💙
@@Middle8 See, hit the nail on the head!
It comes from the Greek “aitherios” which means “ether” or the air beyond the clouds, so “ethereal”, “spacey” or “otherworldly” are pretty useful when describing Beach House.
It’s been overused wayyyyy too much in music journalism to the point where people just use it to describe heavy reverb
2000s dream pop is such an underrated era for the genre. Acts like Broadcast, Sunny Day in Glasgow, and Sweet Trip deserve so much more credit for how they pushed the sound
I would like you to recommend me some more bands like this please.
Thoughts on Gypsy and the Cat?
People always forget SVIIB.
Bloom is extraordinary, teen dream too, and depression cherry, and devotion, and 7 and...
exactly
I know it's odd but they have been recording for 15 years! Became a fan early on.
and once twicr melody
I come from a hip hop background and was first introduced to Beach House when Kendrick Lamar dropped the song "Money Trees" and sampled the guitar backwards. the sound was so trippy I dove into Beach House and was obsessed.
Beach House is one of those bands that hits me right in the soul. Excellent job with the motion graphics backgrounds, you did a great job aligning with their hypnotic feel! Keep up the great work.
I dont know why but I keep listening to Depression Cherry on a loop almost every other night.. it’s actually a masterpiece of an album
Curious... and I am much older than you but have you ever listened to Treasure by Cocteau Twins?

@@davidcamino713 devotion is my personal fav
I know this comment was written before the album came out, but I think Once Twice Melody has topped it. Fantastic album
@@vangledosh eh it's ok to me personally. I don't really understand the super high rating it has on RYM but I respect the opinion.
"Found yourself in a new direction
Arrows falling from the sun"
that part is my all time favorite dream pop moment.
I remember being 16 and walking to school in the pouring rain listening to Devotion. It was ethereal, indeed. I still love listening to Beach House when it’s raining.
Beach House is one of my favorites right now. Makes me feel like I'm floating in space.
i've loved them since I was a kid, but sadly I haven't been able to listen to them the past couple months because of a bad breakup. I can't listen to them without thinking of her, but this video has made me want to listen to them again. preparing to cry tonight lmfao
you got it bestie. i would say happy listening but it doesn’t fit so....... weird dreamy sad listening ????
That's not fair, every beach house song should be only yours not your ex's. Hopefully soon they will be yours again 💜
that's why im stingy with my music. Im careful not to share it. lol
It gets better
Man, thank god I've been single for 7 years. I used to hate this crap lol. MY MUSIC IS ALLLLL MINE. The only people ruining the stuff I listen to are the bands I listen to, when they decide they wanna become boring.
Devotion is so underrated
Criminally
I have such a soft spot for that album
Black Car from the album 7 is insane. And very experimental, in my opinion.
My favorite from that release 💚
That is one of my favorites right now!
Yes. Yes. Yes. I love Beach House so much, whilst I haven't had a chance to immerse myself with their works after Bloom but my goodness, the album run from self titled to Bloom is just a gorgeous artistic journey to witness.
For me, their post-bloom works are even more rewarding
You're definitely missing out, Beach House never misses and the newest albums are equally captivating and mesmerizing.
@@natalia499 ahaha I know 😭 😭 😭 the things is, it's not that I've grown out of them, I could never do that. For some reason life just got in the way and I didn't catch up with their releases

Listening to their first album was crazy and surreal for me, because I couldn’t help but think “wow..they really made this in 2007??”
The editing is top-notch, well done.
Beach House is the band that spoke to the true dreamers. I’ve been with them for 11 years. I won’t ever leave them. They’re pure magic and know it. Once Twice Melody is the best yet.
Once twice melody became one of the best albums ever in my opinion. Top 10. For me to be top album, it means there's no such thing as skipping a song. You love every one of them
Elegy to the void is the most perfect song to use your funeral 👌
No lies here
The song "La folie" by the stranglers is one of the first true examples of a dream pop song that I can think of. It was released in 1981 and Its funny because I instantly thought of beach house the first time I heard it. If you like beach house you will probably dig this song. Great video btw 👍
Why I love reading comments.
Ty so much for the recommendation. Spot on!! So good! Have had it on repeat since I read your comment.

@@radlink14 I'm not too familiar with Spanish music but I am Hispanic so I know a little but yea I have never heard of them, I will definitely give them a listen man 🤙
The name Beach House reminds me of the Ocean, which reminds me of how Ween wrote a bunch of songs while visiting the Jersey Shore back in the mid 90s, which ultimately became their album The Mollusk. The album is one of their best and helped inspire Sponge Bob Square Pants. Would make a great subject for a video.
Take Care is absolutely gorgeous, one of my favourite songs of all time - the slow, twinkling outro especially just evokes some deep nostalgia, like past memories slowly marching away to a steady beat. It's amazing
My fondest memory is my son singing along to this song when he was two. His favorite song is Walk in the Park (:
10 seconds in & already blown away. Those song transitions were mega.
I don't think I will ever stop loving beach house. They help me connect with my loneliness if that makes sense.. The music is so dreamy and melancholy, but at the same time, are absolutely beautiful and full of love. There music to me is romantic, sad, friendly, and easy to sleep to, also my imagination runs free when I listen to them..
Anyone else discovered Beach House through the Space Song/ 2001: A Space Odyssey video
In 2017 i think
Their music is so antique-ely fresh, it’s so impactful and their sound is so recognizable and so comfortable. Cocteau twins and Beach house are my two favorite dream pop exemplars
I was listening to Zebra while this appeared on my subscriptions
It’s like you knew I needed a beach house video right now
Scally's slide guitar is so underrated
One of my favorite bands post-00's. And Bloom is probably my favorite album of the 2010's. Pure perfection.
Favorite band EVER. Alex and Victoria saved my life. 💘
Same ❤️
A song called I follow you by melody's echo chamber is ... something else .. secretly masterpiece...& No one is talking about it 🙂...💔
Beach House is another level of special, they have changed my life and helped me through tough times. One of the few artists that truly earn the title of a goat.
I cannot explain how much i love this video. I love Beach House, and seeing him mention all the songs that I love that aren’t well known (Elegy to the Void and Apple Orchard especially, those are some of my favorites) made my day.
they changed a whole genre without even trying to
I have been waiting for you to do this with my favorite band of all time and here it is. Thank you so much. Your craftmanship with content creation is beyond spectacular.
Their score for “Marin’s Dreams” was just beautiful! I need an album 🥲
you know a band is good when everyone has a different favorite album in their discography.
with beach house that is the case. really unique band
I’ve been waiting for a video on Beach House. Thank you for this, well done as always!
Wow. Thanks for the introduction to a new (old) genre and band. I'm instantly hooked from your video alone. I'm about to go find their albums to buy after this. Hopefully they have CDs
So glad I got to see them twice. "Teen Dream" is one of the best albums of the 2010’s. So many great albums.
Amazing video! More people need to watch this so that they know Beach House is so much more than just "Space Song". Their whole discography is brilliant!
I wish they had mentioned the prolific Cocteau Twins by name (they played a song sample from them). The Cocteau Twins were quite original in they way that they made electric guitar sound like synthesizers. Also, the singer-chick would make up her own sort of words and language for the songs, instead of singing actual lyrics. The result was mystifying. And her operatic soprano voice was utterly heavenly. The Cocteau Twins are arguably an equal to Beach House in the sense of 1) writing prolifically, 2) writing challenging, mature compositions and 3) achieving an other-worldly, even Spiritual effect to their sound. Look at the UA-cam comments to their songs. You will find almost NO negativity, and instead a great outpouring of emotion, tears, tenderness, hurt, care and love. Same for Beach House!
I can listen to "Rough song" over and over and it never gets old. Genius song writing.
So glad you did a video on Beach House! My favorite band.
I have yet to introduce someone to “Myth” and them not like it. It’s universally just an amazing song. Beginning to end.
im so thankful someone made a video on them. They’re my most favourite act ever. I can’t explain how much comfort I’ve received from their music. It’s my dream to see them live once. Thank you❤️
fantastic editing as always and made me understand dream pop. gotta do a beach house deep dive brb
We kinda trolled our wedding guests by putting 'Somewhere Tonight' as the "official" last song of the night 😆 Midway through (after drunkenly-earnest attempts by some couples at a slow dance) the DJ switched it to something more uptempo to cap things off 😁
Honestly i hope one day i get to just chill with you and a bunch of other people and geek out about music.

thanks for making a video about my favorite band!!!
I love Elizabeth Fraser ethereal vocals, fantastic range, coupled with Robin Guthrie's guitar is heavenly.having all their CDs since "Pink Opaque 1983,I was smitten
Bloom is my favorite album... New Year will always be my favorite song
This is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. So well edited! It helps that it’s about perhaps one of the best bands of all time ✌🏼
One of your best videos ever, thank you for making my day man.❤
Elegy to the Void is stunningly gorgeous and one of my favorite songs of all time.
I also have very fond memories of Zebra. I used to play it in the car with my younger son when he was around preschool age, and he always loved the "Zebra song".
Devotion is my favorite album by far. It's a beautiful ride through this emotional journey. It's right in the middle of being both innocent and also full of grief.
I just discovered their music last year and I haven’t stopped listening ♥️
Thanks for this, one of my favorite bands for sure!
My favorite band, their music is the best.
I really like the fact that this is something I’ve always had in my mind
From the moment I met them and tray to find more music similar to them
Which was impossible
I could hear pieces of their style on their influences and other bands in their gender
But I realized that what I felt as dreampop was just beach house
Also
Alex playing style influenced me so much on my own playing, I love him, he’s so elegant and dreamy, so clean, sparkly and melancholic
FINALLY!!! Thank you so much for this! This feels like a personal request answered :D
Once twice melody became one of the best albums ever in my opinion. Top 10. For me to be top album, it means there's no such thing as skipping a song. You love every one of them
Thank Your Lucky Stars doesn’t get the recognition it deserves!! Rough Song is impeccable
Every song clip gave me chills. I'm in love with Beach House.
I love this channel so much. Awesome coverage and let’s me explore new music.
I'm so happy for watching this video about Beach House. This is my all time favorite band and it feels like they've been overlooked and underated. I've been listening to them since I was 15. I'm 23 now and I feel like their songs and albums, mainly Depression Cherry, Bloom and Teen Dream helped me growing up and through some darkest moments in my life. Such a relaxing and nostagia effect their songs cause. I love them so much. Thanks for the video!!!
I have their whole discography on vinyl 🖤
depression cherry was the first album that I've listened from them and it seriously changed my life im not even joking. the first time i heard levivation it made me cry because of how nostalgic it sound, but at the same time, it was melancholic but comforting.
My favorite band for well over a decade now. Thanks for this!
Nothing can describe the feeling I had when I first heard Beach House. I still can’t describe how they make me feel, such a wonderful band.
thank you for featuring Other People, truly a perfect pop song, and the most underrated on Bloom, i think.
One of my fav artists that i really feel like do dreampop really well is
"Dreams We've Had"
His album "Everything and You" is one of my comfort albums and it just sounds so soothing, yet so filled with emotion at the same time.
Their song Aiyana is one of my favorites!
The aspect ratio and the slight visual static compliments this really well
I'm in love with every Beach House song..The 'ethereal' emotions they evoke with their music ❤️❤️❤️
You know it's serious when you know every song 😀
I never saw beach house as anything except dreampop, until their latest album. I don't know, but for me, 7 feels like their first step into shoegaze, because of songs Like Dark Spring and the single Alien.
