"The problem is not the blowhole, the problem is people not respecting the power of nature" That's a very wise quote right there. We can't babyproof the whole world and disrupt nature in the process. RIP to Daniel but this was entirely his fault for his poor judgement and ignorance of the warning signs. People need to realize they're not invincible and learn that nature can be unpredictable and can kill you in an instant, and for that reason it deserves our utmost respect. You're not above the natural order, it will chew you up and spit you out if you don't respect it. Props to the locals for standing up for their landmark and not letting a grate ruin it's natural beauty.

He didnt just hop a fence, he was sticking his chest out to be hit... think it was a miracle he lived to the age he did being that stupid. Parents are entitled to think they need anything more than a fence.
The idea of petitioning to add a cover to the Blowhole... Fences, signs, they took every precaution. His death was tragic and undeserving, but it was an arrogant choice that led to his brutal fate.
Right? At some point humans need to be accountable for their own actions. We can't block off everything that's dangerous because then there would be nothing left.
Good on them for telling the family like it is. The problem isn't the blow hole, it's the stupid people who read and then choose to ignore the multiple warnings of death.
I have the pettiest example of this. Where I work, we have those travellator things, basically an escalator that's flat opposed to the steps. I was 18 when a friend and me, found a blowhole in the rocks that surround the beaches of Loret de Mar in Spain. It wasn't nearly as huge as the one in the vid , stil it looked dangerous as hell. There were no signs or fences, but anyone with a functioning head on their shoulders could see that you have to be very carefull . Anyhow i loved the raw force it radiated, and enjoyed the spray of seawater ( the temperature was between 35 and 42C. ). Wat a fool one has to be to even want to stand on the edge or wanting to get hit in the chest by it!
I feel bad for the 1st one. It's obvious he had mental issues, and instead of arresting and just release him, they should have brought him to a psychiatrist. That's how this death would have been avoided.

I remember when Daniel made the news, another tragedy at Halona, the Native Hawaiians believe the "aina (land) is alive and when disrespected unfortunate things happen, when in Hawai'i always respect the ocean, you may not live to regret it
As a Native Hawaiian, my best advice to tourist would be just because you see locals doing something, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to do it too. BUT if you don’t see any locals doing something, it’s in your best interest to follow our example. Hālona Blowhole is along the strongest current in all of Hawaii, the Kaʻiwi Channel, and is next to Sandy’s Beach, known for having the most broken neck and back injuries in the nation! You will see many of us locals (born and raised in these waters) surfing/bodysurfing at Sandy’s, but unless you have experience, do NOT go in! However, you will not catch locals near the blowhole period! For what reason anyway? That in itself should say something. But if you decide to break past the barriers of places you shouldn’t be and end up hurt or worse, do NOT come here and try to shutdown these places because YOU fucked up as a VISITOR 💯. Next time come correct with respect for the places you’re visiting or no come at all.
I’m astounded that anyone would suggest Tillicum should be “punished” for killing a man. He lives in what for us would be a gerbil cage, every day being tortured with the loud horrible noise from the loudspeakers which he cannot escape, and is forced to do tricks for morsels. Every moment of his life is a punishment.
I could be wrong, but I think the idea would be to make sure no captive animals think they can get away with harming or killing humans. Although it's impossible for them to develop of a fear of doing so if they get put down for it.
I understand why the locals fought back against having a grate put over the blowhole. Not only would it wear away with time and be a constant thing to maintain, but there were signs and deterrent. Just keep on the safe side of the fence and warnings.
Not to mention if the geyser blew the grate off and it injured someone...they would be whining about that. Just leave nature alone and show some respect
I'm not arguing for the metal grate, but why would it need constant maintenance??? A heavy duty stainless steal grate would last many years with zero maintenance in between replacements.
@@the2006mvp Very unlikely. It would be fastened into solid rock & the gushing air/water, would create almost no pressure on a mostly open grate. The slots could have 3.5 inch openings in between the metal, same spacing as railings. I'm not arguing for a metal grate, but I don't agree with your reply.
@@_MjG_ the Problem is salt water combined with the salt in the air, the force of the water hitting the metal, and a way of placing the gate. Sure, it will hold for a year or two, but then it would rust or deteriorate or fall off.
There is some truth to what you said, but if you're smart, you'd do your homework first, think it through with all the pros and cons and how you'd survive if something goes wrong; otherwise, it's suicide.
Something being an older sibling taught me: it doesn't matter if I think I can get away with it, if I don't think all the kiddos following my example can also pull it off then it's likely a bad idea.

At least he's 'free' now. Corky and Lolita have been in captivity for over half a century. Lolita is from the Puget Sound Southern Resident orca population, which was decimated by captures in the sixties and seventies. They are now listed as critically endangered. Her mother, Ocean Sun, is estimated to be between eighty and ninety years old. They will probably never be reunited. Corky is a Northern Resident and member of the A-23 pod. Her sister, brother, niece and grand-nephews can still be seen roaming the coastal waters of British Columbia. What different lives they must lead.
I agree he suffered enough in that God awful fish bowl. They should have released or put tilikum down the first time he killed/injured someone, it would have saved 2 lives. Seaworld barely cares about their own workers lives though so of course they dont care about the animals they hold captive smh.
@@chimpantaco Tilikum was worth over 5 million dollars. He was too valuable to be put down. He couldn't be released. He was only 2 years old when he was captured. Humans ruined his life and they ruined his health. His fate was sealed the moment he was captured. I feel bad for the trainers, but I feel even worse for the orcas. You are the only person that has given extra details about the Seaworld incident. And I have never heard anyone else say that he had gone there before. Your stories are so much better. I thought he would have been killed when he was hit the first time! And that one time would have been enough. At some point, people have to take responsibility. We cannot protect people from the entire world. I do not say this intending any disrespect, but his parent’s request was absurd. Yes, let’s dampen and destroy some part of the natural world because my child doesn’t understand that warning signs exist for a reason. Do we need to cover the entire ocean too? There were numerous signs, and he had to overcome a number of physical obstacles, before he could even get close to the blowhole. The world cannot save people from their own stupidity, ignorance, or recklessness. That said, that sounded like a terrifying and violent way to die. RIP young man.
He might as well've jumped chest first off the Golden Gate Bridge. He's the reason my clothes iron has a warning that says "do not wear clothes while ironing."
I've seen some of Hawaii's blowholes in person. The sound of the water rushing through and the violent power of the spray that got pushed out was more than enough to make me afraid of getting too close to the edge. Not only for fear of drowning, but because lava rock is incredibly sharp and jagged, and being slammed into it with that much force was honestly the scarier option to me.
Tilikum was the largest, as well as the most unstable orca in captivity. The guy definitely jumped in the wrong pool. I feel bad for both of them. Tilikum was basically Seaworld's slave and Daniel Dukes was mentally ill.
I can understand Daniel’s parents wanting a metal grid for the blowhole . However , it wasn’t an accident , Daniel purposely climbed over and put himself over the Blowhole . He wasn’t satisfied in feeling the pressure hitting him in the chest once (which was odd) but he did it again . Maybe he wanted to impress the girls . I agree with the locals he didn’t respect nature . He also didn’t respect and appreciate his life . It’s a reckless way to die . RIP Daniel 🙏🌺❤️🌸.

I believe Tillicum bit his Johnson off! Mr Ballen said "shorts"... so just imagine how's a orca mouth/teeth are supposed to peel wet shorts off of someone? I don't know the truth, this is what is in the film "Blackfish". Keeping sealife captive is cruel.
As soon as you mentioned him jumping the seaworld fence, I knew exactly who this guy was 😪 everyone involved here was a victim. Poor Daniel and poor Tilly. Also, Tilikum wasn't punished even though that was the second of three people he would kill for the same reason SeaWorld kept him trapped and tortured in the first place - he was worth too much to "punish". He ended up dying in a tiny solitary confinement tank and SeaWorld barely suffered. Garbage human beings own that company.

As a mother I definitely sympathize with Daniel's Mom (from the last story). Unfortunately people like him who disregard clear warnings would find a way to remove the cover to the blowhole. If someone is determined to do life-threatening stuff nothing can stop them.
Story 3 illustrates that you can't save reckless people from themselves no matter what precautions you put in place. Put a grid over that blowhole and Daniel would have found another dangerous activity to endanger himself with.

Whereas I do feel empathy for Daniel’s mom; we are built to use common sense, not live in a padded world where 99% have to be anesthetized for the 1% who read signs and say “meh.”
Yeah, although in some sports and activities the line between bravery and stupidity can be really unclear. Not saying that applies here, this one seems pretty bad, but for example when a climber or base jumper or something dies, people will say "oh that's so stupid I'd never do that" but some people will survive an audacious action that others won't. It's hard to decide what's a bad idea sometimes.
Now compare this to bigger things. This is exactly what happens. Ah, yes, let's jump into a tiny, undersized pool with a giant predator who's so psychologically damaged from years in captivity that he was bound to snap. Great idea.
You're damn right they did not "punish" Tilikum for Daniel's death. They knew who was at fault. My heart breaks for Tilikum's tragic life. Daniel's death was, of course, Daniel's fault for going in there, but the larger picture is that it was just the fault of people. The blame for all of the deaths related to Tilikum belongs to human beings. One hundred percent. You do not take a free-ranging apex predator who roams the oceans, rip them away from their tight-knit families as they did to Tilikum when he was just two, make him live in a bathtub, force him to perform tricks only to entertain people, and then wonder what went wrong. The captive horror that they thrust upon Tilikum for 34 years completely devastated his emotional and physical health. You could not possibly be crueler to an orca than by doing exactly what they did to Tilikum.
Ill never understand why wild animals are blamed for doing exactly what they are created to do. Even with shark attacks in the ocean why they kill the sharkvi don't understand. We are going into their homes and they are protecting their homes. If humans don't want to be killed then stop going into places where wild animals live. I don't like places like SeaWorld taking animals from the ocean and putting them in something so tiny is not right
Absolutely right. You should never punish an animal anyway. You reward them for the behavior you want, but you never punish. That being said, a wild, intelligent, and social animal like the orca should NEVER be kept in captivity. It is torture
„He‘s not reckless, he is adventurous!“ Guy proceeds to ignore all and every warning, arches over one of the most dangerous blowholes to „Feel the water smash into his chest“ Yeah… adventurous…

To learn more about Tilikum, you can watch the blackfish documentary. It’s quite disturbing how they capture and place orcas in captivity. They are not meant to live like that and Tilly was especially big so the small enclosed space was that much tighter for him
The Tili and Daniel story is just sad all around. Tili should never have been in freakin SeaWorld and Daniel needed massive therapy and be volunteering at an animal shelter or something.
tilikum was no stranger to “play time”. I agree that they shouldn’t have been kept in captivity. When you see how big they are up close and how small the tanks are its rediculous. He Killed a few people.
exactly what I'm thinking... That man had something child-ish about him and maybe therapy couldve saved his life... He was arrested so often, why did nobody try to help him?
Wjth the zoo story, I immediately recognized it was that story I read in a Darwin Awards book. Also I felt sad, as I knew about Tilikum from watching a documentary called Blackfish. He was a big orca with a droopy fin at the top of the orca's back.(it should be straight standing up, one theory was that it was because he had to swim in circles in a small pool) He passed several years ago. I recommend that film to anyone, regardless of interest in animals. It makes us look back at ourselves, and if the zoo 'shows' are something we should enjoy. It's explained that Tilikum's unpredictable nature was like a human's mental health going down when in captivity, forced to perform against their will. Orcas are highly intelligent beings, and mental health is a thing for them too. It would be stranger to NOT go violent and unpredictable, after what Tilikum went through. I hope he found peace at the end.
very straight, on that one - these killer whales (orca) are not the 'fish' to mess around with, their humanlike mindset and clan familiars are so profound, they're liable to become rogue (somewhat like elephants do); these times hold creatures in bars & glass, away from their kin & in the name of progress (industrialization & commerce), or other popular excused lines.. if we, instead, could be truly adventurous, there would no zoos & exotic preserves, have been - maybe, there would be no poachers, but, those issues are meticulous, compared to the advent of taking wildlands to the city; studying the beast is best left as 'field work'.. there, where these exotic and endangered creatures once thrived, it has great odds to have still held that title, but for the incursions in past centuries by humans, for the intent of (as said, above), which i have observed, since my youth... in saying : "the lord's creations, belong rightly, where you found them.!!" ~WarriorPoet~

Yes, I too accidentally happened upon this channel and became thoroughly engrossed. He is a perfect storyteller...articulate, enunciates well, animated and passionate. Wow! I love the way he acts out every word with his entire body. Good job...
Why aren’t you a teacher, Mr. Ballen? You explain science and history so well that I have finally understood some concepts I could never wrap my mind around! You are an amazing storyteller!
Tili was an abused whale who was wrongly accused of being “aggressive” when it was the people who decided it was ok to keep these whales in a small pool in the dark
So surprised to see him talk about Naica. I am a proud Chihuahua native, and that is so true, no one is allowed to go into the caves of Naica because of the conditions.
Yeah, to be fair it's quite rare, to the point where there are no known fatal killer whale attacks in the wild on humans. Captive ones, a lot more though.
Ohhh... the Tillikum guy! I have heard about that. Too bad he didn’t know that Tillikum was insane. Most of them are actually. The are very loyal to their packs (pods?) and each group has a unique dialect meaning that they can often not understand orcas from other pods. Tillikum was stolen from his family as a baby and then put with two older females that used to drag their teeth on him at night when they were locked in a tiny little box causing big bleeding wounds. What is done to them is torture, pure torture. They are very intelligent and they are very emotional creatures. They live in family units and they stay with their family for their entire lives. They never leave their mothers, and in captivity they take babies from their mothers. Literally babies. Not young children but babies. Also Tillikum removed his gentalia. They usually do in these kinds of attacks. They are also known for pulling victims down and holding them there until they almost drowns and only then taking them up for air and then repeatedly doing that over and over. Orcas have echolocation just like dolphins, they technically are a kind of dolphin, anyway, point is that that means that they are well aware that we need to breath air and can literally see our lungs with the help of their echolocation. Aka: They do it on purpose, well captive orcas that is. Wild orcas don’t bother humans, but they also haven’t been tortured by humans for their entire lives so probably why captive ones behave so differently. Oh and Seaworld like to claim that they take such good care of their orcas that their orcas has a life expectancy far beyond what they have in the wild. Orcas in captivity live for 25-30 years at the most. In the wild males live for 60-80 years and females live for 80-100 years commonly. So yeah... great job there seaworld...
I remember having to do an essay on this topic and guess where we went after doing the research. (School project) If you guessed fucking Sea World you are right.
Seaworld and all other similar places are monstrous torture parks where the most grotesque sadism is visited on these creatures . Anyone who knows the facts is either sickened and hassles their elected officials to shut these obscenities DOWN, or they are sociopaths TOO . Pretty simple .

I’d sure hope not. Spending so much of his life and then dying in that Orca bathtub was more than enough of a punishment.
I agree he suffered enough in that God awful fish bowl. They should have released or put tilikum down the first time he killed/injured someone, it would have saved 2 lives.
I hope he found peace at the end.
very straight, on that one -
these killer whales (orca) are not the 'fish' to mess around with, their humanlike mindset and clan familiars are so profound, they're liable to become rogue (somewhat like elephants do); these times hold creatures in bars & glass, away from their kin & in the name of progress (industrialization & commerce), or other popular excused lines..
if we, instead, could be truly adventurous, there would no zoos & exotic preserves, have been - maybe, there would be no poachers, but, those issues are meticulous, compared to the advent of taking wildlands to the city; studying the beast is best left as 'field work'.. there, where these exotic and endangered creatures once thrived, it has great odds to have still held that title, but for the incursions in past centuries by humans, for the intent of (as said, above), which i have observed, since my youth...

my personal carry, on that matter, says we should not have these centers, like zoos and other menageries.. where the rescue & recover purposes have validity, bringing out the wildlands, to corral them for ambience is what created the demand for all various other creatures & sustains markets, above board merchants & black suppliers..
if that's near to your 'imprisoned' quote, we are in agreement - to include my own & work from that experience, we had a small, local such display of sea creatures, similar to 'sea world', named 'seven seas', and they held an enormous walrus which performed, danced & was a character, exquisite; yet, of his existence, must have languished as if in prison.. so, although a colorful part of child excitement, would have rather they didn't.

Thank you. Have not ever been to a captive dolphin/orca display. It breaks my heart.
