    I actually love that. Seeing a part of Link's darkness. He's always the pure hero who saves Hyrule, but everyone has a part of darkness inside and Link's isn't shown enough. I want more of that Link tempted by darkness but always returning to light because he's the hero.
    Twilight Princess is my favorite of all Zelda games btw

    Honestly, one of the creepiest details here is that, when Ilia goes to attack Link in the vision, she's caught off guard. Not because Link was able to fight her off, but because she saw too late that Link had turned on her first.

    I agree with everything you said except for one thing:
    To me, then and now, when I played it and all these years since, The illias to me represented all of Link's desires. All the things he could achieve with the power of the fused shadows: The love of Illia included. Or maybe even the idea of the adoration of women as part of that power, whether given willfully or against their will...Point is, to me it seemed Link was thinking of all the things he could have, yes, with the power of the fused shadows, before coming to and realizing he had fallen to the temptation in that vision, thus why he drops to his knees. Either way, great video!

    • @chuckmann7127
      @chuckmann7127 5 років тому +236

      I came to a similar conclusion. Link in the early stages of the game is more focused on saving his friends from the village rather than being the true hero. Thus the Fused Shadow would be tempting as it would offer an easy solution to protect the ones he cares about forever. The falling of the many Ilias I think directly represents Link focusing on the people he cares about so much that he goes insane.

      I just think that maybe the fierce deity was gifted his powers, but his power and rage blinded him. Kinda like how Link’s eyes where pupiless when he killed ‘Illia’. I just think corruption found it’s way to deity, too. I mean, the description under the mask is “Could this mask be as evil as Majora’s?” Or something along those lines. Funny, this cutscene didn't hit me with creepiness and take me out of the game. You know what did? When Link thought he defeated the Twilit Arachnid Armogohma, but shock appeared on his face to reveal the battle wasn't done, and he had to kill the "real," albeit tiny, monster controlling the boss of the temple. It was a bit of a fourth wall break in my eyes. It didn't proceed with the boss being dead and me getting a heart container per usual. The game was like "Nope! Not yet!" Sent a chill down my spine. Fitting for spiders, I guess.

    Fair assessment, but when you mentioned Link's image being transferred to one of the spellcasters, I think that it's worth noting that this also represents Link's perspective, as guided by Lanayru, being shifted across the vision.
    This has the undertones that A) Lanayru wants Link to see that the consequences of lust for power are felt by all, no matter how powerful one becomes, and 2) Link should empathize with everyone, including those that have been set apart and those that have set *themselves* apart. Those casters, too, were made by the goddesses; they were people with people-level potentials, rights, desires, and needs.

    This is because Midna states that her kind were banished, and as it seems, only the Twili are able to use the power of the Fused Shadows. They also seem to be the only beings able to touch them without losing themselves to the darkness of the Fused Shadows.

    I always took the blinded eyes as "THose blinded by power" and with the returning of his eyes before he is killed is him/Them realizing that their choices will negatively impact them. I also saw the interloper taking his appearance as that he may also be taken and tempted by that power or those who were tempted were among anyone. I also thought the Interlopers were the ancestors of the Twili so I mean, I guess it makes sense. This whole scene paints a grim image on Hyrule's history- especially in the sense that It implies people were willing to murder and betray one another for the Triforce/Sacred Realm. I mean, they "Ran for the power so greatly placed before them" which also shows the Fused Shadow in a way that- 1. It's blocking the Sacred Realm and 2. it was truly only power they wanted. The Dark Interlopers just vaporizing link can show how badly the situation really became- that until the spirits were sent to seal them away, the were vastly unopposed.

    • @IamCanadian3333
      @IamCanadian3333 5 років тому +59

      Era of Chaos is when the people went to war over the Triforce (some time after the events of Skyward Sword). The "Interloper War" took place within this, as beings highly adept in magic appeared and tried to take the Triforce and take over the Sacred Realm, but the Light Spirits intervened and banish this group to what we know as the Twilight Realm and seal away their great magic in what we know as the Fused Shadow. Rauru builds the Temple of Time to seal away the Sacred Realm entrance seemingly ending the war and the Kingdom of Hyrule was formed shortly after.
      The Hyrulean Civil War is quite different, and we don't know how or why it even started, just that it was conflicts among many different races, and it stopped when the King of Hyrule quells the war and unifies the people of Hyrule under his banner. This happened shortly before Ocarina of Time.
      And the Imprisoning War is also different, as it happens only in the Downfall Timeline sometime after Ocarina of Time (when the Hero is defeated instead of victorious).

    • @IamCanadian3333
      @IamCanadian3333 5 років тому +11

      @@codyrisling1718 The cutscene was an illustration of the war that took place long, long ago. The "characters" we see are mere placeholders to represent different parties: Link and Illia at the beginning were meant to represent common folk that eventually turned against each other (shown by the blank eyes). Dark Links were meant to represent the "interlopers who excelled in magic" that were eventually banished to the Twilight Realm (ie. the ancestors of the modern Twili). Blank-eye'd Link becoming one of the interlopers was the most confusing, but my best guess is that maybe he was originally a commoner that "switched sides" (ie. join the dark interlopers) and mastered magic among them, but that part is just speculation on my part. The "screaming Link" part is him (and the rest of the interlopers) getting banished to the Twilight Realm and having their magic sealed.
      As stated, the Interlopers were the ancestors of the modern Twili who tried to establish dominion over the Sacred Realm and take control of the Triforce for themselves. They initially lived in the light world with the rest of the races and greatly excelled in magic.

      @@IamCanadian3333 yeah, so i was basically correct in that aspect. I knew what happened in the interloper war, and i was confused as to why maskednintendobandit said that the event caused the civil war. As more evidence to this, the word "interlopers" is highlighted in red to signify that yes, these are the same interlopers as in the interloper war.

    Although I think this definitely covered the overall message, if you wanted you could even do a second video that covered what the original Japanese games say happened and elaborate on what it means for the franchise.
    In the Japanese version of the games, it's never stated that the point where they left Hyrule was known as the Sacred Realm; it simply says that the point where they left is where the Triforce was left behind. The term "Sacred Realm" in Japan is akin to the term "Holy Land" and is used interchangeably over there as both a name for what I'll call Hyrule Proper and what we know ubiquitiously as the Sacred Realm. The original version doesn't refer to the antagonists in the vision as "Interlopers" either. They're simply those adapt with dark magic that went on a campaign to subjugate Hyrule and presumably claim the Triforce.
    Given the new context, what I believe is shown at the beginning is the Triforce resting in Hyrule Proper. Why would it be in Hyrule Proper? Although it's yet to be revealed if the Triforce had ever rested there before its discovery in the Silent/Sacred Realm (the opening scene of Skyward Sword suggests that it could have been given a scene where its being worshipped by humans) we do know that it stays there for at least a short time after the end of Skyward Sword. But why would we presume that it stayed there any longer than that? Because of Zelda's indifference to a parable passed down by Impa from the Goddess Hylia herself: that the very existence of the Triforce should be hidden from mankind lest... disaster ensue.
    What does Zelda then decide to do? She not only allows but I presume (along with Link and Groose) encourages more citizens from Skyloft to descend to the Surface despite the fact that the Triforce is not yet hidden away. If this is the era where all beings are balanced in light, this could indeed be understandable due to the fact that very little ill will being has been displayed by any of Hyrule's citizens at that point. Zelda may have even presumed that the Triforce would act as a vigil of the coming of a new age and good will, going on to become the iconic symbol we see so prominently displayed around Hyrule. The Triforce then could have been kept in the possession of the Royal Family until further events led to the realization of the parable passed down by Impa.
    What is this realization? The very thing we see happen in this vision. Notice the fact that piece of land that the Triforce rests over throughout the vision retains the little dust particles left behind by Farore. These particles represent life as shown in the original vision in Ocarina of Time and yet they never fade, nor is the strip of land given a golden tinge or blessed with any kind of blue aura indicative of the Sacred Realm. This and the fact that the common people of Hyrule became incensed with greed to commit travesties in order to claim the Triforce suggests to me that they were made aware of its power and the fact that it was hidden somewhere not in the Sacred Realm but Hyrule Proper. The sorcerors' success in their campaign to subjugate Hyrule and with it the possibility of claiming the Triforce I think not only drew people to finding the Triforce but also to join the ranks of the future Twili (though I admit that this may be a bit conjecture).
    Nonetheless, the Light Spirits descend and seal away the sorceror's and the Fused Shadows. The Triforce too is implied to be sealed away, possibly for the first time in the part of the Sacred Realm guarded by the Temple of Time. Then ends the vision.

    • @Margar02
      @Margar02 5 років тому +2

      I don't think I agree with your theory of the triforce being in Hyrule proper and the Japanese translation of "sacred realm" vs. "Holy Land," because in aLttP, the entire dark world is said to be what was once the sacred realm, now corrupted. In this case, it means that the sacred realm is indeed an entire parallel version of Hyrule. This would contradict your suggestion that the sacred realm is simply Hyrule proper and that the triforce was hidden in the regular realm.

    • @josephasbury4492
      @josephasbury4492 5 років тому +1

      It depends on the context. In Lanayru's vision, he refers to Hyrule as "the Sacred Land Hyrule" instead of just "Sacred Land" the official name of the Sacred Realm in Japan.

    • @ElloFantasy
      @ElloFantasy 4 роки тому +3

      Opposite of what I thought, considering the power of the tri-force was seen visible only within the Twilight Realm. However I suppose that could just be a way of protection in that world. Either way, my thought process is that the Fused Shadows and the Tri-force are one and the same, yet opposites of each other. The fused shadow being the tainted version of the Tri-force. There definitely is something important about things being mirrored, the entrance to the Twilight Realm itself is a mirror after all.

  • @Zeldafan1ify

    This. This is what 13 year old me had always wanted to hear, all those years ago: that Link too, is capable of having a darkness in his heart that could manifest in many ways (ergo Water Temple in Ocarina of Time). What Nintendo did by creating this scene was demonstrate, in a beautiful way, how the darkness that hovers over Hyrule is the same darkness that lingers in every human heart, and that the great Hero (of every incarnation) is not exempt from this human flaw. The spirit of the hero is an ancient, yet pure immortal light that drives him to do the goddesses' will in every game, but the mortal bodies it inhabits (these incarnations, these Links from each timeline) are hylian (and by extension, humans, like Gerudos). And all humans are susceptible to being possessed by that darkness. Link is no exception. I love how closely it connects to Biblical lore. Link and Illia in their humble Ordon outfits represent humanity (Adam and Eve), the goddesses warn humanity not to seek the triforce (as God warns Adam not to eat the forbidden fruit). The fused shadows are a tainted source of power that tempts its users (as the snake tempts Eve). Unlike Midna, who uses the fused shadows for tainted revenge, Link may want to use the fused shadows for good, but eventually he too (like Midna) would fall under its influence, for as the Bible says; "The Spirit is willing but the body is weak". Man I love Twilight Princess.

    I've just connected the dots.
    The Zonai are the Interlopers!
    Strong magic wielders who suddenly vanished.
    We can use Wolf Link.
    We can find Midna's Fused Shadow in Master Trials.
    The hand in Ganondorf's chest is Twili colored with Zonai bracelet symbols in a Zonai cavern with the same symbols on the Fused Shadow!
    We are dealing with Zonai/Interloper/Twilight magic! I am convinced that is Midna's arm she attacked and sacrificed, or she can regrow limbs.
    Also, the circular "mirror" we all considered as remnant of the Mirror of Twilight is but a piece remaining. When Midna destroyed it at the end of Twilight Princess, she did so completely along with the words, "Link...I...see you later."
    How did she/they come back without the Mirror...or did they use the mirror? And why does it look different in Breath of the Wild...unless it is not the same mirror?

    I actually always thought of Link’s reaction to the falling Ilias as lust. The fused shadows are very powerful and deceive its bearer into thinking that it could grant its bearer their greatest desire, thus beginning their descent into madness and destroying everything they hold dear. Since Ilia is Link’s love interest in Twilight Princess (please don’t come after me for saying that Zelink/Midlink people), Link’s greatest desire is Ilia’s love. The desire the fused shadows deceived Link into believing it could grant for him. Link smiles at the thought of being able to force Ilia to love him and it’s disturbing to see him nearly give into his lust and be tempted to do this selfish and vile thing his best friend since childhood. Forcing Ilia to love him against her will is the gateway to Link being willing to do more horrific things to more people he loves until he finally loses everything goes insane. Thankfully, Link snaps out of it and is horrified with himself for nearly giving into the temptation.
    I loved your analysis on this scene (especially since it’s such a difficult one to analyze), but I’m going to have to disagree with you about the falling Ilias, but that’s fine that we don’t agree and that’s why it’s fun to watch other interpretations 😊

      @mycelium_6508 9 місяців тому

      I thought this too!!! Like the way the camera slowly pans down her body as she descends downwards kinda gave that creepy vibe of lust. I think she also symbolizes innocence, (with the way she’s always smiling and giggling) and the multiple copies of her falling downward could be representing all the other innocent victims that could be affected (maybe even killed?) if Link decides he wants power.

    • @missm8067
      @missm8067 9 місяців тому

      @@mycelium_6508 Yeah, because I feel like, if it were to represent Link’s willingness to kill innocent people and/or his loved ones, it would have been everyone in his life falling from the sky (e.g. Rusl, Collin, etc.) and I don’t think that they would be laughing, but the fact that it was just Ilia and she was laughing makes me more inclined to believe that that part was Lanayru telling Link “See? This is how the fused shadows will try to tempt you…” by appealing to Link’s lust and he almost succumbed the temptation. Also, I just feel like Link’s reaction to the Ilias is that of lust more than anything else. With that said, I suppose that it really does boil down to interpretation, but it’s crazy that Nintendo would show lust from one of the main hero of the game and that’s why the Hero of Twilight is my favorite Link because, instead of being a flat character, he was given all of these different nuances and even this scene where he struggles with temptation.

  • @GameMasterKyro
    @GameMasterKyro 4 роки тому +9

    I'd say this sounds like the most logical conclusion, albeit I'd like to make one clarification:
    When you say the Dark Interlopers were "presumably killed by the light spirits", this may not entirely be true. This dark tribe is the same one from which the Twili are descended from, as Midna explains and as is evidenced by the presence of the Fused Shadow that Midna still carries; the tribe was sealed away in the Twilight Realm and over time evolved into beings that shunned the light, but also were shunned by it, both figuratively and literally. The Twilight Realm is an eternal prison, which was why Ganondorf was sent there after his botched execution. Now, here's where the aforementioned clarification came to play. As we know that Midna's people are descended from this tribe (this information can be gleaned from Midna herself, by the way, if you want to check my facts), the tribe therefore was not entirely killed off. It's not explicitly stated, but it can be assumed that either all of them were imprisoned, or only the major instigators of the conflict were executed. This information changes very little of your theory on the meaning behind the cutscene, but I just wanted to clear that up.

    Always LOVED the theory of it connecting to majoras mask of the dark interlopers and the tribe in MM being the same thing

    It may be creepy, yes, but this cutscene is one of the Zelda series’ most artistic moments, and it’s a stunning moment among many great moments in this game. Seeing the cutscene again in this video left me speechless and you, Sir, have nailed the analysis. Thank you.
    Video games. Are. Art.

    Damn if the goddesses feared the fused shadow so much to the point they had to seal it, Ganondorf is truly a monster considering how easily he defeated the fused shadow with just the triforce of power under his command.

    I've played through this game about 30 times. I'll never forget that scene.

    Thank you for a) documenting the actual scene, in its full context, b) giving such a detailed break down and interpretation, and c) being the first person I've found that actually went more in depth into the "interlopers" that many reference in timeline explanations.

    Majoras Mask: I'm the creppiest game in the Zelda series!
    Twilight Princess: you dare oppose me mortal

    Twilight Princess will be forever my favorite Zelda game of all time. The style is so beautiful, the story and the world are very interesting to explore... There is a dark feeling every where. Zant is absolutely fenomenal, and one of the best antagonists I have ever seen!

      I played this game for the first time about three years ago. Ocarina and Majoras Mask were always my favorite. When I played Twilight Princess I was blown away. It instantly became my favorite Zelda game maybe my favorite game ever. Its just incredible!

    i always thought that link changing clothes had a different meaning.
    Link has two sets of clothes(for the sake of the argument): his civilian clothes that he wears in the beginning of the game and his hero's tunic which kinda translates into knight armour in my mind.
    so i thought that in the cutscene when link was in his civilian clothes - he represented ordinary hylian minding his business, but when link changes into his tunic - he represented a soldier trying to protect the triforce or maybe more bold he represented the hero who was present at the time of the interlopers and got corrupted by the dark magics.
    i mean we see the tunic run towards the triforce THEN the trio of dark links appear AND THEN the fused shadow appears.
    but i love your idea of switching between storytelling and half-story-half-warning-telling.
