When I was a child in England I planted a scarlet runner been a week later I checked the ground where I planted it, being a silly kid that I was I took the growing seen out of the ground, I was so excited that it had started to shoot, that in my haste I dropped the seed onto the cement and broke it.

I had no idea how gorgeous beans could be, I picked up a bunch of organic beans and will try to grow them here in Ireland. Beans are very generous in yields if you look after them. My God the size of those pods!

A topic I love Misilla! I bought some of these beans to grow but it was too late for this season. I want to grow them mostly for the hummingbirds and the cool flowers. I think more people would grow these if they knew about them so it's great that you're spreading the word!

The plants are rebounding, though, and I've got some pods forming. I'm so excited! I planted this variety specifically for their pretty flowers.

I have a ton of these growing and had no idea that you can pick them dry. Last year I harvested some I thought were ready but were kind of small. This year I’ll let them dry on the bean and harvest them dry. Then soak and cook in chili. Hopefully that works !

You can eat the young leaves like spinach, flowers in salads and the roots like potato.
In warm climates they are perennials and the roots get bigger.

Can you cook the pink ones and the lilac ones together, or will they not cook evenly if you do that? Also how can you tell when the pod transitions from the sweet edible version to the point where it has to be cooked to be safe for eating? Thank you!
I have these questions too!
When they fill in the pods and beans are mature and firm you’ll have to cook them longer till tender. The dried brown pods with hard mature beans will need to be soaked 4-12 hours before cooking.
Maybe an unrelated question, but how do you secure your trellises in the ground? They look great and very sturdy! Thanks for this informative video! I bought a set of 6' skinny bamboo poles from the nursery and then formed a teepee with twine at the top. if you run the hose on the soil for just a minute, you should be able to work the pole down a few inches. It worked great for me. I'm in CA Bay Area.

Absolutely!
I think they're the prettiest bean around but lima beans are one of my least favorite foods so I probably won't even eat them. I plan on just using them for decoration. Never thought to eat the smaller pods raw. Mine are pretty much done for the season though. I've been letting the pods dry up and shelling them.

Hi. I let my Scarlet Runner Beans dry on the vines then harvested them and put them in mesh buckets. Time got away from me and I didn't shell or store them. The dark, speckled beans look fine when I open the pods. The pods are dark and mottled, no overt signs of mold. Can I still shell, store, or and cook the beans? Thanks.

As long as the beans aren’t moldy they should be fine. Our pods look the same sometimes. You can compost any moldy beans. Make sure to soak then cook dry beans thoroughly to remove lectins. Just like you would with kidney beans. They have to be cooked thoroughly.

My scarlet runner beans are yellowing at the base and losing some leaves there right around flowering... is that normal? I've hit them with nitrogen fish emulsion, watered good and prepared nice soil for them in the ground. I used some peat moss as a top dressing/mulch so I wonder if it's too acidic? I could add lime but I may be overthinking it. They are still growing tall!
Hi Sorry I didn't get to your message right away. I hope your beans recovered. Sometimes too much moisture can lead to yellow leaves as well as lack of nutrients.

Yes it is advised to soak dried beans between 4 to 12 hours before cooking.
Very Interesting I don't know any one in New Hampshire that grow Scarlet runner beans My wife type person bought them for the flowers thinking they would be good for bees birds and butterflys
So, it's mid September and I have a ton of flower but no bean pods yet.... is this normal?
Hi, Scarlet runner beans take up to 3 months to produce mature pods. If it’s not forming pods, it could be due to lack of pollination or heat stress.

What is legumes inoculant?
Hi it’s a strain of rhizobia bacteria that can be present in soil. If it’s there already, they’ll form nodules on roots of legumes where they store nitrogen they extract from the air. They convert nitrogen into a usable form plants can use.

It takes 80 to 90 days to mature. If it’s 12 to 14 weeks before your first frost, you can sow now. Soak the seeds overnight for faster germination. ☺️

We are expecting our first hard freeze this week in Montana. I was grew runner beans for the first time this year for dried beans. I still have a lot of green pods on the vine, will they dry on the vine during winter or just turn to mush? Can I dry the green pods for dried beans or do I need to freeze and eat as green beans?
Hi! It’s best to pick them now as they will rot or freeze then turn mushy. You can use them like shelling beans and put into a soup or freeze them. ☺️

Hi Karl, I'm in Ottawa ON, zone 5 and I have a beautiful crop going. I lost many flowers due to high temperatures (yes, it gets that hot here). Since the temperatures cooled a bit for a whole week, I have loads of flowers growing again and the pods are doing great! The temperatures are forecasted to go up again (bummer), so I hope I don't lose too many flowers. I do enjoy growing these!
Are you direct sewing your beans in the ground or do you germinate them into small plants before placing them into the ground??............?
Hi we usually direct sow beans, they do better this way than transplanting them.

Can these beans be canned just like a blue lake bean? I figured they would need to be picked when they're younger and not tough but i cant find much on pressure canning scarlet runner beans in their pods, ive never canned dry beans so i would much rather just can them like i have the blue lake bush or pole bean

Hi the mature dried beans must be cooked the same way as dried kidney beans to cook off the phytochemical that can make you sick.
I live in zone 8, where the first frost date isn't until Nov 7th. Would it make sense to sow these in August for a fall harvest?

Hi Ashley, Yes they are perennial in mild climates where winter temperatures range between 0 and 10 F, but mulch thickly. They are hardy to USDA zone 7 and up. They form tuberous roots that sprout back in the spring. If you live in a cool climate you can dig up the tubers and store them in a pot of potting soil in the garage, shed or basement, just make sure they don't freeze. Thanks for watching! Misilla

I am growing these for the first time this year and I seem to have a problem with Japanese beetles. They are devouring the plant. Is there anything I can do to save it?
Hi You can hand pick the beetles and larvae and out them in soapy water or leave the larvae out for the wild birds. Here are some organic ways you can try. 1. Neem Oil Spray 2. Dust the surface of the soil with diatomaceous earth (DE) and it will dehydrate them. You can also dust the plant with (DE), just avoid getting it on the flowers to prevent harming pollinators. Consider wearing a mask as the dust can be inhaled. 3. Lastly, you can try putting beneficial nematodes or Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) into the soil to prevent future infestations. Beans are nice to look at,like organic gems,but they don't taste well without salt.Salt is bad for me,and beans make me very gassy. :( I don't like beans in my stomach {-_-}
