Cobra is the best thing i ever seen. If they finally take it to the big screen I so hope they do it justice. Also Thomas Jane as Cobra (see the movie Thursday to see what I'm talking about).
Wonderful commentary. Even though it started back in '82 I've only just recently come across Space Adventure Cobra and immediately liked it. I can guess why I was never aware of it when I was young. It seems it's acceptable to have an animated TV show for boys that actually has topless women in it in Europe but there's no way that would ever be permitted on regular TV in the U.S. The Cobra series involves really pure, imaginative, and creative animation. All hand drawn action scenes, no reliance on CGI like today. All they used were mulit-plane cameras and yet they created this wonderful interstellar saga. And with the present culture, a movie with an adventurous, athletic, male character who drinks, smokes, and is fully attracted to beautiful women probably wouldn't get made, As for a major live action film, I honestly can't think of a single current film star who could successfully portray the role of Cobra.
I'm both a fan of Cobra and Aja, and had no idead about this. What a shame, just like Jodorowsky's Dune, another great adaptation to live only in our imaginations... Great video, thanx!!!!
I genuinely felt sad listening to Alexandre talking about his son playing with Guardians of the Galaxy. This is definitely my favorite video from you. After thinking about it I felt I should've talked more of a Cobra back when the anime we're getting licensed by Nozomi & Sentai. Meanwhile what about Cobra Return of Joe Gillian?
Cobra is the only movie I can see over and over again, maybe seen it 12 times. I never re see other movies. I want to see Seann William Scott as Cobra.
Thanks so much for this I never would have known it was cancelled. Waited so long, and thought it was just in Limbo. Very good video with great detail to history
Esperemos que algún día puedan hace una muy buena película con este personaje y sus aventuras espaciales, seria un gran éxito aunque sean tiempos diferentes.
I like the video. Cobra is one of my favorites. I have the series on my phone. I’m waiting for a video comparing Cobra and Vash the Stampede. Vash has so many similarities. Thanks for the video.
Woulda loved to have seen it, but Aja missed his shot. He was an extremely hot property in Hollywood for a few years, But he burned up all his political capital with a string of _expensive_ projects that failed to connect with audiences. . High Tension and Hills Have Eyes made him a name brand, but he immediately diluted this cache with Mirrors and P2. Both films had marketing campaigns that heavily touted Aja and neither one performed to expectations. Worse yet, Mirrors was weirdly expensive. Piranha 3D was awesome, but it was even *more* expensive and failed to break out. After this point, the bloom was off the rose. He was no longer a hot new talent. He was a filmmaker associated solely within a niche sub genre of horror that was going out of style, both in terms of content and scale. Aja tried to break out of his niche with HORNS, but the movie simply didn’t work on a narrative level. The only thing more bizarre than the tone was the pace. and despite the notable star and popular IP, the movie was barely released. In fact, it went day and date theaters/VoD. And again, it wasn’t cheap. Being known as the guy who makes expensive horror movies is not an enviable position. The whole point of horror - from the studio’s perspective - is that it can be done on the cheap. Then came 9th Life of Louis Drax, which was an out and out Bomb. Not even Day and Date; straight up, direct to VOD., it was financed with independent money, so the backers probably broke even via foreign presales. But no one was happy. The story has a happy ending with Crawl. Crawl Managed to continue Aja’s love of effects heavy productions, but coupled it with a sharp, hitchcockian concept and a manageable cost. Oxygen doesn’t seem to have made any cultural impact, but it does look like a step in the right direction. A chance to build a new winning streak. The shame is, if he played his cards right, Aja absolutely could have gotten Cobra made. And foreign presales was the perfect way to do it. Presell to Europe, where the brand has a following. Use that money to minimize risk for an American release. This creates the chance for a major upside while minimizing risk. LGF did something similar with God’s of Egypt. 150 mil budget. 15 mil in total costs for LGF’s domestic release.
I don’t know-Peter Jackson, who also had his start in low budget horror movies and television films, disappointed Universal Pictures when The Frighteners, his first big budget Hollywood film, ended up being both a box office bomb and failed to make an impact on critics-yet immediately after, he was entrusted with the production of the Lord of the Rings movies and the rest was history. I do think that Aja really was just unlucky when it came to trying to produce Cobra. Perhaps the failure of the also Japanese, but far more popular sci-fi Speed Racer by the already established Wachowski’s spooked Lionsgate executives, who did not want to risk that an adaptation of an even more obscure Japanese property would fail.
Great video and i sent out on social media when i the news came that they where going to make a live action "Cobra" movie. Too bad nothing happend. A quick tip, dont say just France. It is really big here in Sweden too. Old animes like: Silver Fang, Starzinger, Balatac, Cyborg 009, GalForce and more from the 80s are considered "classics" for thoes who grew up in the 80s. I know it was big in france, but everybody says that. So it sound like nobody else watched it. Maybe we "Scandinavians" dont count. ;(
Thank you for sending it out! Sorry, didn't mean to exclude any other countries, I simply focused on France since Aja is French and how much connection the series has with the French c:
Liam A. C. / Lac The Watcher i know. Dont worry. You did a great job and i like what you did. Sorry for complaining. Question: do you want to see a ”Cobra” movie? I think it is hard because people are going to connect to ”Total Recal” if you know what i mean?

Even though, Space Adventure Cobra will be much more easy to sell, to the american audience, than Akira. This is because the very character is based in western characters like James Bond, Jean Paul Belmondo, and Clint Eastwood´s "Dirty Harry".Beasides, Cobra is an anti-hero, so the show has beautifull women and sheer violence. Someday they'll make a life action Space Cobra. It's too good not to be made!

Honestly, it sounded to me like he knew it wouldn't happen by the interview where he talked about not getting a big name star for 5 years
Yeah, i'm not sure if Joe Gillian will happen unless Netflix decides to fund it, i doubt they know it exists honestly
Glad at least someone is talking about this franchise
I still hope a Cobra Movie , i remember dreaming when i saw the poster movie

Not James Gunn. They should have Luc Besson or the Battle Angel team, something with a pulse on the original feel.
But James would fit with comic moments of Cobra very well tho. Luc would catch retrofantasy… Ah, dreams dreams 😢
you say that like taika waititi akira is a good thing
His stock was higher when this vid was made.
But I completely agree and was thinking the same thing
This was interesting
either netflix or amazon prime should bring "Space Adventure Cobra" the series back. a Life adaptation movie will be awesome too
So now he needs to do a series, on Netflix, like One Piece and Yu Yu Hakusho

Cobra is available on Amazon prime in latinamerica
Il y avait une “demo/trailer” du projet sur UA-cam, mais je n’arrive pas à la trouver. Quelqu’un a un lien, ou quelque chose?
なぜ完成させられなかったの?
The Anime was huge in South America. It's my favorite cartoon of all times. The TV series was amazing, the animated movie was really bad though.
And now... if they made it.. it'd be subject to WOKE rules.. :(
