Jomox Airbase99 exploration session, 26 minutes of analog drum love

  • My last night with the JA99 before its shipped to a new owner. Had to run thru some of the thousand plus drum kits on this rack mounted analog drum synth from the past. Sequenced by tr-626 and run thru boss bx-8 mixer and some reverb at times. Very long winded video but this is all to be sampling material for myself to work on a new project, reducing and filtering these loops by su700 and modular gear.

    this has definitely convinced me to spend a little bit of money on this machine. Excellent demo!

    Hi! How is the process of triggering the sounds from tr626? was it easy to map each sound to specific midi number/note? I have an airbase 99, and bought a drumbrute just to sequence it, but now that I see this it makes me think to sell the drumbrute and get a tr626. to what sequencer functions it responds? accent/swing/ etc? everything?

      Alexis Toumpouris hey nice you have an airbase99! Yes the 626 is wicked for this machine, easy to change what midi numbers the 626 sends out and the airbase99 will understand shuffle and flam and all 7 levels of accent are seen as different velocity for different volumes which I thought was awesome because the airbase99 has such strong polyphony it is easy to create ghost note like sequences with sounds almost unheard but adding to the flavor of the pattern.

    Are you using the Beatstep here for sequencing?

    from what you remember, how close to an 808 can you get the kick? does the lowest "Harmonics" setting still have a bit of harmonics to it or it it pretty much a sine?

    • @owenthesoyboy
      @owenthesoyboy  6 років тому

      Devon Hansen I’m not an 808 scientist but there are some incredible kick like the 808 in the airbase99 that are close and also on point and then beyond and even into insanity.

    Did you use program change to switch kits or the Jomox knob? I have a issue on the first note switching kit with program change that almost mute the first note of the sequence, specially the kick, doesn’t sound on the first note

    • @owenthesoyboy
      @owenthesoyboy  5 років тому

      Giovanni Bastianelli never used MIDI program change and I would bet you need to send it on the last step of a pattern to give the jomox enough time to prep the kit sounds

    Did you run these beats through the individual outs of the machine, or the master outs? Which reverb did you use (and was it usually on the main mix or the individual tracks)?

    • @owenthesoyboy
      @owenthesoyboy  7 років тому

      yeah I ran almost each drum to its own channel on the old Boss BX-8 and EQd a little bit to seat them all into the right kind of balance for this session to sound ok all the way thru. CRAZY DRUMS in the Airbase! Reverb on these was either the Ensoniq DP/4 or two Zoom RFX-1000 that I would run to their own aux send and have a short reverb on one RFX and a longer or weirder one on the second RFX. Using the BX-8 two aux send/returns.

    • @PhatInAHat
      @PhatInAHat 7 років тому

      Thanks! With the individual outs are all the drums in mono then? Does that pose any issues with using them in tracks?

    • @owenthesoyboy
      @owenthesoyboy  7 років тому

      PHat in a hat OK here goes - they were sent mono out of the airbase into a mixer, which has stereo outs of its own and panning available on every channel. These drums may all be center panned but I don't know for sure. Cheersz

      Muchos gracias. And can you remember which reverb machines you used on where? I especially liked the ones at 8 mins and 16 mins. I'm guessing they're the Zooms as I think the Ensoniq sounds a bit larger and with less depth.

    Hi Owen, your demo is pretty awesome. Let me ask, all that pattern variation is done changing patterns live in the 626, and changing programs somehow in the Airbase? How do you tweak the drum params? I am soooo confused by all this awesomeness, i have an airbase myself and would like to give it some live performance options!

    • @owenthesoyboy
      @owenthesoyboy  5 років тому

      this was using the main outs (stereo) as it was a last ditch effort to run thru and record the thousand kits and sounds on board with any patterns I had in my tr-626. Woulda been nice to get this done and saved as multi track of the individual instrument outs but I didn’t have the time. Amazing drum box that is for sure.

      @@owenthesoyboy thanks Owen, your results are remarkable! I dig also the BX8 sound, i have a km60 myself. 100% will check the 626 as a sequencer for the Airbase for sure!

    • @owenthesoyboy
      @owenthesoyboy  5 років тому +1

      I changed airbase kits on the fly from the front panel. The 626 has some nice accent variations per instrument that can hide some sounds down in the background to add some mojo to any sequence it’s pretty damn nice for drums in that respect

    • @owenthesoyboy
      @owenthesoyboy  9 років тому

      Andrea Gill thanks A.G.! love the airbase but need the $, too much gear for my dinky home studio with just too little time to make the most of it all. I do hope to get an xbase09 next year - cool to sequence synths/samples by the xbase09 alongside jomox's pounding drums like in this vid. I will miss it and recorded this session to make sure I had a load of material from this beastly machine that I can use as samples to keep this sound alive. its a BEAST!

    Is there a VST version of the TR626 or any drum plugin that could sequence the Airbase 99? Logic's piano roll isn't making the Airbase as interesting as the 626.

      there are midi instruments in ableton's max4live that are sequencers. Pretty sure you can use that with the airbase 99

      Hard to imagine right? I'm a family man and money is tight for a home studio. I never gelled with any of the ways to control the Airbase99 parameters in real time while jamming. That reason alone made it hard for me to keep it around, it seemed so stagnant vs what I hoped to do with it. It wasn't a sad sale either as years later I have a 9090 drum synth (BOOMER!) and a stack of other drum machines for any other sounds - R-50e, AutoVari64, FR-2L, TR-505 w/sound mods, SU700 and a DrumDokta2, Pclone2, DreDrum. Long live the drum machines!
