It is said that the young Shankara was in the process of crossing Narmada river when he found it was in floods. He collects the water in his kamandalu controlling its force. As he crosses the controller river, Sri Govinda Bhagavatpada asks the young boy "who are you". This Atma Shataka is the young boy"s reply (he was 8 years old then) . Then Guru Bhagavatpada replies "child I was looking for you - as my student" and Shankara replies, "yes I was in search of you too". The first five of these verses describe who one is NOT and the final one describes who the real one IS. Known by different names such as NirvaNa Shatakam, Atma Shatakam, it embodies the jist of Adi Shankara's philosophy of Advaita. Some of the learned saints proclaim "who else but Shankara can put this perspective so well".
isn't so fascinating that at such young age adi shankara had such high consciousness about who he was,,, I mean consider yourself in that situation if anybody asks us who we are we say our names,our posts,our statuses.only when we think consciously that we are sth much more beyond this,we reach that level.... it is still not spontaneous(at least I can say that for me)

I agree This is the summary of Shankara's Adwait Siddhanta but Adwaita philosophy cannot be considered as the only path offered by Bharatiya Adhyatm. In fact the Second Jagatguru after Adi Shankara, Sri Ramanuja offered a more polished version of Adwaita Pilosophy which is known as Visishtadwait Siddhanta . I just mentioned this to inform people that our Vedic Dharma is so vast and so flexible that people with all sorts of mental makeup can find a path here which is best suited to him/her ...So just as the Adwait Siddhanta is considered a Vedic Doctrine similarly the Visishtadwait Siddhanta is viewed as a vedic system as well..and these are just two there are 5 more . 2) Neither can I be termed as energy (Praana), nor five types of breath (Vaayu), nor the seven material essences (dhaatu), nor the five coverings (panca-kosha). Neither am I the five instruments of elimination, procreation, motion, grasping, or speaking. I am indeed, That eternal knowing and bliss, Shiva, love and pure consciousness.
3) I have no hatred or dislike, nor affiliation or liking, nor greed, nor delusion, nor pride or haughtiness, nor feelings of envy or jealousy. I have no duty (dharma), nor any money, nor any desire (refer: kama), nor even liberation (refer: moksha). I am indeed, That eternal knowing and bliss, Shiva, love and pure consciousness.
4) I have neither virtue (punya), nor vice (paapa). I do not commit sins or good deeds, nor have happiness or sorrow, pain or pleasure. I do not need mantras, holy places, scriptures, rituals or sacrifices (yajna). I am none of the triad of the observer or one who experiences, the process of observing or experiencing, or any object being observed or experienced. I am indeed, That eternal knowing and bliss, Shiva, love and pure consciousness.
5) I do not have fear of death, as I do not have death. I have no separation from my true self, no doubt about my existence, nor have I discrimination on the basis of birth. I have no father or mother, nor did I have a birth. I am not the relative, nor the friend, nor the guru, nor the disciple. I am indeed, That eternal knowing and bliss, Shiva, love and pure consciousness.
6) I am all pervasive. I am without any attributes, and without any form. I have neither attachment to the world, nor to liberation. I have no wishes for anything because I am everything, everywhere, every time, always in equilibrium. I am indeed, That eternal knowing and bliss, Shiva, love and pure consciousness.
