When a young boy of eight (Adi Shankaracharya) while wandering in Himalayas, he encountered a sage who asked him, who are you? The boy answered with these verses, which are known as ‘Nirvana Shatakam’ or ‘Atma Shatakam’

I'm a person who is not overtly emotional and consider myself quite adept at keeping my emotions to myself. This piece by Adi Shankaracharya and this beautiful rendition made me realise my false notion. It was like some floodgate opened. With all my effort to subdue, the tears kept flowing, the throat kept on getting choked. Overwhelming seems a small word. I wish I could, for once, meet Adi Shankaracharya, wash his feet with my tears, and massage them so that his tired feet get relieved. My blessings to the singer, for through her voice, I am given an idea as to who am I.

Exactly how it was for me too, the first time I heard this very rendition a couple of years ago. I have no understanding nor do I have concerns as to why it is so. I am just so grateful for the healing it provided to a very bruised soul, then.

I am a practising Advaitha devotee. These Sloan’s, which I have never heard so far, sum up the essence of the philosophy. As we say, in your life time the renunciation of duality is the purpose. What I strive to do is to remember this and speak, act or do anything. Hopefully some time soon I can renunciate the self and become Sivoham.

Here is presented the famous hymn NIRVANA-SHATKAM , also called ATMA-SHATKAM ( consisting of 6 stanzas only) by ADI SHANKARACHARYA. This hymn is on the glorification of Nirvana i.e. the Emancipation of Soul from the limitations of physical body and its Unification with the Absolute Entity or Brahman underlying everything in creation. In every line of every stanza, this hymn is profoundly surcharged with superb philosophical thoughts. After taking Sannyasa from mother at the age of 8 , the extraordinary boy Shankara of Kaladi village in Kerala state ( the spot where now shines Sri Shankaracharya Sanskrit University) , went to the Himalayas. In search of the GURU or the Spiritual Teacher, he wandered from cave to cave till he discovered his Master Bhagavan Govindapada, himself a disciple of the illustrious Acharya Gaudapada. On the very first meeting, Guru asked the boy : Who are you my Child ? The boy exceptionally equipped with acumen, replied : I am not mind, intellect, thought or ego. I am not hearing, taste, smelling or sight. I am not ether or earth, fire or air. I am the Soul of Knowledge and Bliss.. I am Shiva, I am Shiva ...(.quoted ) .
Ms. ARCHANA RAVI, the adorable artist who may be equally looked upon as a loveable daughter, is surely to be thanked and congratulated for her incredible performance. The way or style evinced by her through excellent performance is something a little hard to be expressed precisely. The young artist's rendition is marked with coolness, calmness, sweetness, melody, gravity and discipline. Her intonation and pronunciation of the divine language Sanskrit is perfect and pleasing to ears. This spiritual hymn of the world's greatest philosopher has been appropriately voiced by ARCHANA RAVI. She seems to be an artist of high altitude. I am sorry sir. There is no SOUL in our Dharma. Atma is not synonymous with Soul. Atma is eternal, beginning-less and all pervading. Soul has a beginning and confined to body and is an Abrahamic religious concept.
@@vish2553 It is the physical body to which the Soul ( Atman / Jivatman / Individualized Soul) appears to be confined, that has a beginning and end. It is transitory and perishable. But the Soul ( Atman/ Jivatman / Individualized Soul) , as being essentially non-different from Supreme Soul ( Paramatman / Brahman ) , is beginningless and endless. It is eternal and undecaying. That Soul ( Individualized Soul ) appears to be encaged in a gross body of perishable nature, is due to ignorance that is to be wiped out with the help of right knowledge of the non-difference of Atman and Brahman. One and the same Entity when Individualized is Atman and when universalized is Brahman. This is what I know so far. Thank you for your view .

This is a marvelous bhajan by Adi-Shankaracharya, in which he is teaching us 'we are neither this nor that' but his one line positive answer that we are "Chidanand Bhutam Shivoham Shivoham". But in his another Bhajan Braham Jnanawali, he gave the right touching positive answer to the great question 'Who Am I'. If you understand this Bhajan in Sanskrit and Adwaitwad philosophy, you can achieve Samadhi soon.
Salutations to Jagadguru. This is what Ramana maharshi was teaching ie. to know 'who am I'. Slokam and meaning is given. Further it is soulful rendition. Yesterday night I was very much interested to refer this sloka with meaning. GOD provided me it along with rendition. Salutations to God.
