    Peter Yu. As a grappler (well taking a hiatus right now) and a software engineer I would love to hear about Peter's day to day, his decision to return back to acdemia and pursue a PhD and what he thinks of machine learning, AI etc.

    The Hane-goshi or Uchi-Mata thing cracked me up because I put out a Uchi-Mata tutorial on my Sambo Nation Fort Worth account and people were trashing me calling it Hane Goshi saying I should learn judo after I did Judo for 15 years. It was kinda funny. It got the video more views though

    Sup Shintaro,
    Being watching your channel for a while now. I'm noticing how its evolving, and I love it, keep it up! I professionally work as a brand designer & illustrator, an honestly most fight gyms suck ass at branding. Craig Jones comes to mind as person who really knew what he was doing in terms of personal branding.

    Good call about 80's. I'm not talking about individual people and entrepreneurs who do judo as a business, that's for smarter people who try to get something actually done, but the branding topic did take me back to "how to make judo great again (in people's eyes)".
    I don't think you need much more than one hit movie with judo, where let's say a cool character knows judo and it comes across that it's judo specifically. Rocky is probably the most iconic example of a movie like that, but Van Damme movies and Karate Kid were also something that made a long lasting impression of karate. You could even promote it to movie producers in some ways, offer training of the actors and whatnot. Judo looks really sweet on movie screen. Or you could push things like John Wick doing judo more to the front of people's minds, and I don't necessarily mean to say doing a movie review on some judo youtuber's channel, albeit I've only seen bjj guys hyping it up and reviewing techniques used in those movies on youtube, judo people just don't do that. Like I think I could count about 12 techniques in the first movie that were close to being pure judo techniques from ippon seoi nage to sasae tsurikomi ashi to sankaku jime. And the best part is that Keanu Reeves actually trained martial arts intensely for the movie to do all the action himself. I feel like there is no person who didn't think Keanu Reeves was cool as heck as John Wick. He even had a very relatable and emotional story to the silly action movie. A guy who just wanted to be left alone in peace and not harm people.
    Or a judo anime that kicks ass. Like Hajime no Ippo did to boxing and there's basketball animes and whatnot. A lot of great animes have martial arts, but you just need some hit that revolves around judo. Or an anime that has judo in it, someone who uses judo. The Japanese are really good at taking a seemingly ordinary subject and turning it into exciting anime, I see no reason why judo couldn't have a hit show. I could totally see an anime similar to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure having a character that uses judo or is a judoka.
    Or a fighting game. When I was a kid and saw Street Fighter 2, nothing was as cool as Ryu from Japan doing this karate stuff in white gi and black belt and a little bit of magic fireballs as well. He even did karate's version of the common martial arts throws like sumi gaeshi. That was almost cooler than his karate to me, I always wanted to play that guy and be that guy. And Ken was a similar character, an American blonde version of Ryu in red gi, something for everyone I suppose.
    I swear those would kick the interest in judo through the roof. That's relatable to regular people and giving it some sense of magic and prestige and just level of cool. You can sell the actual sport and health and exercise and kid friendly perspective all you want, but if you manage to give a push to people's imaginations and dreams, that's when you spark new life to the interest in judo. That's real effective branding that comes almost free of charge, everyone will remember judo for two generations at least.

    I think the cauliflower ear thing is something that we should move on from as a community. If you get it, you get it.
    But we should never glorify some kind of body damage, as part of our beautiful sport.

    here we go, so; a simple way to brand is either sport/competitive or self-defence. One could also go the kids or adults as a focus. this brings up a past post about 3 levels or ways of being a student in judo, the sport focus, self defence and the practitioner. deep dive there.
    Branding;
    karate being the broad term, the issue being is the average person/ non-martial arts enthusiast does not know the difference between styles, Shotokan, Go Ju Ryu…. heck, even TKD, all the same to the average parent. Kyokushin Karate (Shinkyokushin Shodan here) branded itself as “the strongest karate”. If you watch tournaments, you see it’s hard hitting, full contact, with rules. It does tend to ring certain types of people but it also filters people out… like Peter used to do(lol, please, lol)
    Gracie Barra BJJ presents to be the sports BJJ group, whereas Gracie family talk about self defence BJJ.
    Sambo, the Russian martial art that bridges judo, wrestling and striking.
    Krav Maga is the martial art that trains average people in 200 different ways to rip a man’s bollocks off.
    Branding.
    keep up the great content

    I always get a kick out of the Old Master stories. Most americans don't understand the etiquette and customs of Japanese martial arts. There is little respect for discipline. You don't approach the master, the master will approach you. When he does, pay attention. He probably won't explain the same thing again.
