This is such a good video. I wish I could double thumbs up. So many good insights and hidden gems of knowledge and experience. My favorite quote from Dr. Rhadi, "My job when we got into the two handed judo space, I needed to get my attack off before you got yours off. And then, once we hit the ground, WE HOME COOKING CHITLINS, BABY!" 🤣
ill never forget being a kid and getting grappling magazine and they always had dr. rhadi demonstrating different techniques and ways to train. rhadi is the man!

Lol BJJ is just a subset of judo. At the end of the day you're just doing judo regardless of what Gracie marketing tells you lol
@@montagistreel you'r absolutely correct. I just said it that way because some of the casuals view the 2 as being different but in reality they are the same. Sambo is also largely based off judo, and keyokeshin karate 2 great traditional marshall arts. Speaking of traditional marshall arts technically so called BJJ would be one considering it's judo.
@@montagistreelAs a judoka, I have to disagree with you. Even though they come from a common source, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has undergone many years of development that have made the ground game of BJJ more complete and detailed than what is found in the Judo Kodokan curriculum. If you don't like the approach of BJJ, just stick to judo, but the development and deep knowledge in BJJ should be respected.
@@NguyenManhquyet As a judoka who dabbles in bjj, I have to disagree with -you-. While there is some value that BJJ has brought to the game, it's largely the same moves within a different cultural context and matrix that favors individualism both conceptually and in practice. The Kodokan is obviously the "source of truth" in many ways but even from the beginning their stance on newaza, and moreso Kano's, was shaky. IMO the value BJJ has brought is this - 100+ years of a different vein of practicing Newaza. That is inherently valuable and has probably surfaced some fundamental ways of thinking about newaza, but literally almost none of these moves are new, as many BJJ ppl would have you believe. This does not (necessarily) downplay the achievements of people who've contributed to it, only the ones whose claim is that it is so different or new or that this move is [insert guy's name here]-guard as opposed to whatever it was called in the old black and white silent films where you can see the same things....from the Kodokan, often times. At my dojo we do 50% Newaza without question, so I do not have this concept of ground-light or nearly ground-less judo, but I do know that some judo schools are like that. That is definitely a detriment, a deficit, and at least part of the reason why BJJ has been able to catch on so much in the states. With rare exception(like the US, where I am), most countries have far more judo practitioners than BJJ ones

Great podcast coach. Refering to what DR Rhadi was saying, how important do you think strength is for a beginner in judo? I'm a white belt with experience in submission grappling and try to rely more on technique and being relaxed, but I wonder how much should I go with my strength & power experience to dominant in randori.
I’d save that for tournaments. At least have a majority of your randori for now be on technique. As you progress you can implement your own style onto the basics

Lloyd Irvin took part in a gang rape. He was acquitted because, as he claimed, he couldn't get aroused. Multiple students of his have been accused of gang rape and sexual abuse.
I respect Rhadi Ferguson telling his story. But people have to be aware of these other, more important, stories as well.

The Doc is like drinking from a firehose
The butt scoot and guard pulling in bjj is a well known problem....but why don't any other judokas (I am one) speak out about the nonsense of turtle? And then judo wastes time learning turtle "attacks": this is not martial--you strike a turtle on the back of its neck, not turn it over for pin or arm-bar. I don't like bjj, but guard is martially superior to turtle!
Because the number of failed seio nages is very high in judo and that creates all the turtle defence and attack positions. In the end, Judo is largely practiced as a sport and so it has to adhere to its rules.
@@no1dqueen I hear yoiu. But Judo makes rule changes all the time. They could penalize turtle in a way that also reduced the number of failed seio nages.
Heard mention of Lloyd Irvin and I hoped it's not the gang rape Ll so I listened just a little more. Yep, it's the same criminal Lloyd Irvin. Skipping this episode as it's disappointing.

Noone should be speaking Lloyd Irving's name in a positive way. He's a con artist and grifter, and the sexual assault allegations and continued enablement need to be stated clearly.
Good evening. I speak the truth that I know and from my personal experiences. I merely gave my background and discussed how I grew in the art and sport and those who were instrumental along the way. I think the best course of action in all things is to lead with love, to mirror Christ’s redemptive power of forgiveness and to speak on the things that we know personally. That’s what I’ve done here. I love Lloyd and I love you and I’ve never met you. Love is a commandment that I choose to follow.
I trained with Lloyd for years and he never charged me a dime. He trained with me, was my sole training partner for 2 years and without him, I don’t make an Olympic team. That’s my truth. 🙏🏿♥️

@@judomachine Maybe Lloyd should have shown a little more love for the victims of the gang rape that he was party to and a little less love for himself. There is no god, except for the ones we have created. Yes, be kind, this is the way. What lloyd did is the antithesis of kind.
