    I agree with the other poster that a false stone would work perfectly for the wall gap. At worst, take a squared-off cross section of wood, stain it, and allow it to represent the large beam that is behind it, while plugging the hole.

    I did exactly the same on my Cotswold stone wall when they took the plaster off. Left it open which also allowed the stone to breathe and looks beautiful.
    I'd just get a local stone mason to replace that bottom piece of granite. Won't cost much to do at all and you'll know you're restoring properly and leaving a lovely legacy.

    Congratulations on your mind change. I'm always happy to see restoration over renovation. I'd been thinking that even if it wasn't feasible to completely evict the brick wall in that office, opening things up as much as possible above the window would look so much better ... and even with it being a work in progress, it already looks amazing. Instead of covering up the stonework on the sides of the window, would finding some similar stones to fill in the hole(s) be an option? If not, some wood skirting around the bottom to cover the hole(s) with the stonework left exposed above might look good.

  • @Epoxinator
    @Epoxinator Рік тому +27

    Regarding the bell, if the steel rod is going to be the rotational center for the bell, why don't you want it to be a single piece from one side to the other? It will be a lot stronger and you won't have to worry about getting both ends matching. A single rod would be a lot easier to set up with the pivots on either side, as well. Then the wood pieces would just be responsible for holding the bell onto the rod, and the wood wouldn't be constantly flexing in the center under the weight of the bell.

    • @MerlinIslandCrabCoveRailway
      @MerlinIslandCrabCoveRailway Рік тому +2

      I suspect there could be a problem with uneven thermal expansion with a solid rod the temperature could go from -10C to +45C but agreed a longer piece might have been better. but it would need some space to expand.

If there is the rock masonry behind it I would expose it and redo the wood beam like a mantle in a fireplace. I love the rock masonry there. Also, is there a plan on refinishing the window, clean it up? At some point if you decide to have weddings there, you could install a hidden outdoor screen to come down to cover that window so that if your in your office you can shut it so as not be a distraction to those in the chapel.

    Hi, thanks for the video series. In case you haven't been made aware of this, the tannic acid in green Oak will corrode ferrous materials such as mild steel, especially if there is dampness about. Stainless steel is OK for the fixings. Given you have a mild steel rod, by the look of things, a bit of time considering a good primer and coating system for both the rod and oak may help.

    And btw. the entire weight of the bell and the hanger will be on the inside screws. I would combine your original idea with that cage around the oak and the new idea with the steel rod and secure the inside of the steel rod with a cage around the wood pressing the rod against the oak. //R

    A question about the courtyard: in the old photographs of the convent, there were four raised beds in the center court, and now there are only three. When you restore the cobbles, were you planning on also restoring the fourth bed?

    Amazing how you are getting on with things at the Convent. Your office will be the smartest in the village! You have put a lot of thought into the hanging of the lovely bell. Love the archway you have exposed over the special windows down to the chapel, but I too was so worried some rubble was going to smash through them! But well done Sean for not doing that! Keep on truckin' guys! xxx

    Remove all the drywall on the entire wall and make the entire wall a feature… replace stone or anything else needed
