      The film The Death of Stalin captures this perfectly. Krushchev and the others are totally uncertain at first on how to handle things, or even what is appropriate to say, since Stalin literally had Beria and himself controlling everything. As corrupt and tyrannical as Khrushchev was, executing Beria was a MASSIVE service to humanity and showed that even a guy like him can have SOME logic and sense.

    Khrushchev was one of those rare historical figures that you can love and hate simultaneously. I think that he went along with Stalin to stay alive while waiting for the opportunity to undo Stalin’s damage. He wanted to reform without charging full speed into a train wreck. His “ No Shooting Above This Line” approach to Party Discipline as he demoted his enemies without shooting them brought him down while saving his life.

    Khrushchev rising from a relatively minor bit player with average looks and humble beginnings to become the leader of the USSR is one of the most intriguing stories ever, especially considering the extremely dangerous characters he had to contend with. Lavrentiy Beria is probably one of the most evil people in history, the fact that Khrushchev was able to continue to survive Stalin and also out maneuver Beria makes him a very interesting character.
    If the USSR was inherited by Beria it'd be even more ruthless than it had probably been under Stalin, the world'd probably shudder to imagine that.

    Fun bit of trivia: during the first world war, Khruschev, a skilled industrial worker, was in the process of immigrating to the United States. He had already submitted the immigration papers, but his plans were disrupted by revolution and ensuing civil war. Had the timing been only slightly different, Khruschev would have been running an American factory, instead of leading the Soviet Union. However, his children and grandchildren followed his dreams. Nearly all of his descendants live in the US.

    • @thunderbird1921
      @thunderbird1921 2 роки тому +1

      That would explain then why the "Kitchen Debate" between him and Nixon turned into one over industrialization and technology development. Khrushchev fiercely defended the Soviets' accelerated production and criticized prototypes of inventions he felt were wastes of resources (Nixon in turn defended them and claimed this is what leads to better innovation and technology breakthroughs).

    If you dig deep enough Khrushchev did that for 2 reasons:
    - avenging his son sent to the WW2 front in 1942 (as a penalty for a stupid gun accident caused the death of his fellow-comrade) to die in the battle eventually;
    - looking better comparing to those before him and what legacy he has to deal with (the trick today's Russian government is widely using).
    Pretty hypocritical if you consider the fact that he was almost the most active participant of 1937 purge.

    I was playing as China in HOI4 recently and I thought, "hmm, there can be videos about interwar China (and not only)".
    Here is a list of possible topics:
    - the Xinhai revolution;
    - Yuan Shikai's dictatorship;
    - the Warlord Era;
    - the Northern Expedition etc.
    There are almost no videos about interwar period, it must be fixed.

    It turned out that the Secret Speech was a huge reason that caused the Sino-Soviet split in the early 1960s. Mao was a close ally of Stalin and followed many of his beliefs, and Khrushchev’s inflammatory remarks greatly impacted Mao’s ability to collaborate with the new Soviet government.
    Ironically, the final result of Sino-Soviet split was the US developing diplomatic relations with China in the hopes of countering the Soviets, and after Deng Xiaoping took power in the late 1970s, led to China transitioning into a market economy.
